Working memory effects in speeded RSVP tasks

    Get PDF
The present paper examines the effects of memory contents and memory load in rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) speeded tasks, trying to explain previous inconsistent results. We used a one target (Experiment 1) and a two-target (Experiment 2) RSVP task with a concurrent memory load of one or four items, in a dual-task paradigm. A relation between material in working memory and the target in the RSVP impaired the identification of the target. In Experiments 3 and 4, the single task was to determine whether any information in memory matched the target in the RSVP, while varying the memory load. A match was detected faster than a non-match, although only when there was some distance between targets in the RSVP (Experiment 4). The results suggest that memory contents automatically capture attention, slowing processing when the memory contents are irrelevant to the task, and speeding processing when they are relevant.Spain. Raúl Roa y Jorge Mañach. Actualización de una polémica

    Get PDF
Given his strong temperament, Raúl Roa, the Chancellor of Dignity, did not usually miss a chance to point out statements considered unjust or harmful to the revolutionary interests, by fighting it with his pen and speech. In his polemic debates, he had in his favor his brilliant and sharp intelligence and a vast culture, as well as an extraordinary ability to find the essential and defining edges of the problem under debate, and to project them with solid and compelling arguments. In his polemic with Jorge Mañach, a Cuban intellectual who worked between the 1920s and 1960s, his peculiar style is highlighted, in which one can appreciate, togetherwith a polished and educated language, popular expressions that give his prose a rich Cuban flavor.

Liver Cholesterol Overload Aggravates Obstructive Cholestasis by Inducing Oxidative Stress and Premature Death in Mice

    Get PDF
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is one of the leading causes of liver disease. Dietary factors determine the clinical presentation of steatohepatitis and can influence the progression of related diseases. Cholesterol has emerged as a critical player in the disease and hence consumption of cholesterol-enriched diets can lead to a progressive form of the disease. The aim was to investigate the impact of liver cholesterol overload on the progression of the obstructive cholestasis in mice subjected to bile duct ligation surgery. Mice were fed with a high cholesterol diet for two days and then were subjected to surgery procedure; histological, biochemical, and molecular analyses were conducted to address the effect of cholesterol in liver damage. Mice under the diet were more susceptible to damage. Results show that cholesterol fed mice exhibited increased apoptosis and oxidative stress as well as reduction in cell proliferation. Mortality following surgery was higher in HC fed mice. Liver cholesterol impairs the repair of liver during obstructive cholestasis and aggravates the disease with early fatal consequences; these effects were strongly associated with oxidative stress. This work was supported by grants of the CONACYT 252942, 236558, and 166042, CONACYT Fronteras de la Ciencia 1320, Asociación Mexicana de Hepatología, and SEP-PRODEP-913026-1461211, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Iztapalapa, by grants SAF-2011-23031 and SAF-2012-34831 from Plan Nacional de I+D, Spain, Fundació la Marató de TV3, La Mutua Madrileña, PI11/0325 (META) Grant from the Instituto Salud Carlos III, by the support of CIBEREHD, and by the Center Grant P50-AA-11999 from Research Center for Liver and Pancreatic Diseases funded by NIAAA/NIH.Peer Reviewe

The Spanish Institute of Oceanography carried out in 2009 two bottom trawl surveys in the NAFO Regulatory Area in Division 3NO and 3L during the months of June, July and August respectively. The results on Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) are presented and compared with those from previous surveys from the same series. In 2009 the catch (33 kg.) and estimated biomass (139 t.) confirm the decrease of shrimp importance from 2004 in 3NO. In 2009 the biomass estimated of northern shrimp in 3L Division was 74091 t. showing a drastic decline (50% with respect to 2008) after the upward trend a long the whole period studied. Catch results from the surveys and data analysis are discussed in this paper

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the predictive value of approach coping on academic burnout and engagement dimensions in a sample of 775 students among different university grades of Educational Sciences. Spanish versions of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS), Utrecht Work Engagement Student Scale (UWES-SS) and Coping Strategies Inventory (CSI) were employed. The results show that most of the approach coping significantly and negatively predicts burnout but significantly and positively predicted engagement. The intervention programs have to consider those strategies to prevent burnout and to increase engagement

Patient-reported outcomes regarding sexual health are lacking or have not been validated for transgender patients following vaginoplasty. The aim of this study is to further characterize the difference in sexual health, genital self-image, and the relationship between them for patients who were pre- and postvaginoplasty. METHODS: A community advisory board informed an anonymous online survey utilizing patient-reported outcomes. Pre- and postvaginoplasty respondents were recruited online. Survey measures included the Female Genital Self-Image Scale (FGSIS) and the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System sexual health measures. Welch approximation t tests were performed for FGSIS and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System questions, using Bonferroni correction. RESULTS: A total of 690 respondents prevaginoplasty (n = 525; 76%) and postvaginoplasty (n = 165; 24%) participated. The postoperative cohort, compared with the preoperative cohort, reported higher scores for orgasm (P = 0.0003), satisfaction (P = 0.001), and pleasure (P = 0.002). FGSIS total score was higher among postoperative respondents (79.4% ± 17.1%) than preoperative respondents (50.6% ± 15.1%) (P \u3c 0.0001). Using Spearman rho, no significant correlation between FGSIS total score and any Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System subsectional measures was observed for the postoperative cohort, but a correlation (P \u3c0.001) was observed for the preoperative cohort. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals who are contemplating vaginoplasty have worse sexual health and genital self-image than those who underwent vaginoplasty, yet genital self-image does not correlate directly with sexual health. Sexual health is multimodal for each person

Biplot methodology allows representing the information contained within a data matrix into a more reduced dimensional space with minimum information lost. To obtain a higher quality of representation of both axes of the data matrix, an extension of the Classical Biplot is used: HJ-Biplot. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is an international organization whose purpose is to promote the development of sustainability reports by all kind of organizations for their economic, social and environmental performance as a commitment to their Corporate Social Responsibility. Brazil registers an increasing number of companies committed of publishing their progress in GRI’s social responsibility reports. The largest companies of this country are grouped in three well-defined clusters based on their level of response to these three groups of indicators. This article aims to highlight the relationship between sustainability performance indicators reported to the GRI during 2011 and 2012, and the possible grouping of Brazilian companies based on the type of indicator where they are more related.
