This empirical study investigates the practical impact of different types of time-based organization of shiftwork. After a theoretical follow-up, we compare three types of staff schedules in the same hospital located in Picardy (fixed night schedules and alternating schedules) in order to determine their consequences on sleep, eating behavior, and social and family life. The results show that the extent of these consequences is related to different aspects of the time-based organization of shiftwork.Esta investigación empírica tiene el objetivo de estudiar el impacto de la práctica de diversas formas de organización temporal del trabajo por turno. Index of refraction of gases for matter waves: effect of the motion of the gas particles on the calculation of the index.

    No full text
International audienceTwo different formulae relating the index of refraction nn of gases for atom waves to the scattering amplitude have been published. We show here that these two formulae are not consistent with the definition of the total scattering cross-section while the formula developed by one of us (C.C.) in her thesis is in agreement with this standard knowledge. We discuss this result, in particular in the neutron case for which such an index was first introduced. We finally evaluate the index of refraction as a function of well known quantities and we discuss the order of magnitude of the ratio of (n−1)/nt(n-1)/n_t, where ntn_t is the gas density

Wigner Measure Propagation and Conical Singularity for General Initial Data

We study the evolution of Wigner measures of a family of solutions of a Schr\"odinger equation with a scalar potential displaying a conical singularity. Under a genericity assumption, classical trajectories exist and are unique, thus the question of the propagation of Wigner measures along these trajectories becomes relevant. We prove the propagation for general initial data.Comment: 24 pages, 1 figur

On the relationship between Arctic ice clouds and polluted air masses over the North Slope of Alaska in April 2008

Recently, two Types of Ice Clouds (TICs) properties have been characterized using ISDAC airborne measurements (Alaska, April 2008). TIC-2B were characterized by fewer (110 μm) ice crystals, a larger ice supersaturation (>15%) and a fewer ice nuclei (IN) concentration (<2 order of magnitude) when compared to TIC-1/2A. It has been hypothesized that emissions of SO2 may reduce the ice nucleating properties of IN through acidification, resulting to a smaller concentration of larger ice crystals and leading to precipitation (e.g. cloud regime TIC-2B) because of the reduced competition for the same available moisture. Here, the origin of air masses forming the ISDAC TIC-1/2A (1 April 2008) and TIC-2B (15 April 2008) is investigated using trajectory tools and satellite data. Results show that the synoptic conditions favor air masses transport from the three potentials SO2 emission areas to Alaska: eastern China and Siberia where anthropogenic and biomass burning emission respectively are produced and the volcanic region from the Kamchatka/Aleutians. Weather conditions allow the accumulation of pollutants from eastern China/Siberia over Alaska, most probably with the contribution of acid volcanic aerosol during the TIC-2B period. OMI observations reveal that SO2 concentrations in air masses forming the TIC-2B were larger than in air masses forming the TIC-1/2A. Airborne measurements show high acidity near the TIC-2B flight where humidity was low. These results strongly support the hypothesis that acidic coating on IN are at the origin of the formation of TIC-2B

Evolution comparée de la consommation de médicaments dans les 5 pays européens entre 2000 et 2004 : analyse de 7 classes pharmaco-thérapeutiques

The drug consumption level in France is often considered as being one of the most important in Europe. This study aims at confirming this assertion over the period 2000-2004 by comparing drug consumption in Germany, Spain, France, Italy and the United-Kingdom. The results show that in 2004 drug consumption in France was no more the biggest for all the seven studied classes. Moreover, the consumption levels of the five countries have converged between 2000 and 2004, as well as the consumption structures.Defined Daily Dose (DDD); Drug Consumption; European Comparative Analysis

Fluoxetine treatment abolishes the in vitro respiratory response to acidosis in neonatal mice

International audienceBACKGROUND: To secure pH homeostasis, the central respiratory network must permanently adapt its rhythmic motor drive to environment and behaviour. In neonates, it is commonly admitted that the retrotrapezoid/parafacial respiratory group of neurons of the ventral medulla plays the primary role in the respiratory response to acidosis, although the serotonergic system may also contribute to this response.METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using en bloc medullary preparations from neonatal mice, we have shown for the first time that the respiratory response to acidosis is abolished after pre-treatment with the serotonin-transporter blocker fluoxetine (25-50 µM, 20 min), a commonly used antidepressant. Using mRNA in situ hybridization and immunohistology, we have also shown the expression of the serotonin transporter mRNA and serotonin-containing neurons in the vicinity of the RTN/pFRG of neonatal mice.CONCLUSIONS: These results reveal that the serotonergic system plays a pivotal role in pH homeostasis. Although obtained in vitro in neonatal mice, they suggest that drugs targeting the serotonergic system should be used with caution in infants, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers

Development of porous fired clay bricks with bio-based additives: Study of the environmental impacts by Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

The incorporation of bio-based pore-forming agents, from either agricultural (wheat straw – WS and olive stone flour – OSF) or chemical (glycerol carbonate – GC and dimethyl carbonate – DMC) origins, into clay formulations, has been investigated. Fire clay porous tablets have been manufactured at laboratory scale and characterized through physical, mechanical and thermal properties. An increase of 7.2% of the porosity correlated to a decrease of 7.0% of the thermal conductivity was measured for the best samples. The environmental impacts of these formulations have also been examined through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) using the ReCiPe v1.10 method. It was noticed that the incorporation of pore-forming agents led a decrease of about 15–20% of all the studied impact categories. The advantage of the use of bio-based additives in clay bricks was then confirmed from both performance (lighter material with a better thermal insulation) and environmental points of view
