A downward revision to the distance of the 1806-20 cluster and associated magnetar from Gemini near-Infrared spectroscopy
We present H- and K-band spectroscopy of OB and Wolf-Rayet (WR) members of
the Milky Way cluster 1806-20 (G10.0-0.3), to obtain a revised cluster distance
of relevance to the 2004 giant flare from the SGR 1806-20 magnetar. From GNIRS
spectroscopy obtained with Gemini South, four candidate OB stars are confirmed
as late O/early B supergiants, while we support previous mid WN and late WC
classifications for two WR stars. Based upon an absolute Ks-band magnitude
calibration for B supergiants and WR stars, and near-IR photometry from NIRI at
Gemini North plus archival VLT/ISAAC datasets, we obtain a cluster distance
modulus of 14.7+/-0.35 mag. The known stellar content of the 1806-20 cluster
suggests an age of 3-5 Myr, from which theoretical isochrone fits infer a
distance modulus of 14.7+/-0.7 mag. Together, our results favour a distance
modulus of 14.7+/-0.4 mag (8.7^+1.8_-1.5 kpc) to the 1806-20 cluster, which is
significantly lower than the nominal 15 kpc distance to the magnetar. For our
preferred distance, the peak luminosity of the December 2004 giant flare is
reduced by a factor of three to 7 X 10^46 erg/s, such that the contamination of
BATSE short gamma ray bursts (GRB's) from giant flares of extragalactic
magnetars is reduced to a few percent. We infer a magnetar progenitor mass of
~48^+20_-8 Msun, in close agreement with that obtained recently for the

Development and Validation of an Electronic Postoperative Morbidity Score.
BACKGROUND: Electronic health records are being adopted due to numerous potential benefits. This requires the development of objective metrics to characterize morbidity, comparable to studies performed in centers without an electronic health record. We outline the development of an electronic version of the postoperative morbidity score for integration into our electronic health record. METHODS: Twohundred and three frail patients who underwent elective surgery were reviewed. We retrospectively defined postoperative morbidity score on postoperative day 3. We also recorded potential electronic surrogates for morbidities that could not be easily extracted in an objective format. We compared discriminative capability (area under the receiver operator curve) for patients having prolonged length of stay or complex discharge requirements. RESULTS: One hundred thirty-nine patients (68%) had morbidity in ≥1 postoperative morbidity score domain. Initial electronic surrogates were overly sensitive, identifying 173 patients (84%) as having morbidity. We refined our definitions using backward logistic regression against "gold-standard" postoperative morbidity score. The final electronic postoperative morbidity score differed from the initial version in its definition of cardiac and neurological morbidity. There was no significant difference in the discriminative capability between electronic postoperative morbidity score and postoperative morbidity score for either outcome (area under the receiver operator curve: 0.66 vs 0.66 for complex discharge requirement, area under the receiver operator curve: 0.66 vs 0.67 for a prolonged length of stay; P> .05 for both). Patients with postoperative morbidity score or electronic postoperative morbidity score-defined morbidity on day 3 had increased risk of prolonged length of stay (P < .001 for both). CONCLUSIONS: We present a variant of postoperative morbidity score based on objective electronic metrics. Discriminative performance appeared comparable to gold-standard definitions for discharge outcomes. Electronic postoperative morbidity score may allow characterization of morbidity within our electronic health record, but further study is required to assess external validity
Reference points for predators will progress ecosystem-based management of fisheries.
Ecosystem-based management of fisheries aims to allow sustainable use of fished stocks while keeping impacts upon ecosystems within safe ecological limits. Both the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets promote these aims. We evaluate implementation of ecosystem-based management in six case study fisheries in which potential indirect impacts upon bird or mammal predators of fished stocks are well publicized and well studied. In particular we consider the components needed to enable management strategies to respond to information from predator monitoring. Although such information is available in all case studies, only one has a reference point defining safe ecological limits for predators and none has a method to adjust fishing activities in response to estimates of the state of the predator population. Reference points for predators have been developed outside the fisheries management context but adoption by fisheries managers is hindered a lack of clarity about management objectives and uncertainty about how fishing affects predator dynamics. This also hinders the development of adjustment methods because these generally require information on the state of ecosystem variables relative to reference points. Nonetheless, most of the case studies 58 include precautionary measures to limit impacts on predators. These measures are not used tactically and therefore risk excessive restrictions on sustainable use. Adoption of predator reference points to inform tactical adjustment of precautionary measures would be an appropriate next step towards ecosystem-based management

Age‐related changes in the biophysical and morphological characteristics of mouse cochlear outer hair cells
Outer hair cells (OHCs) are electromotile sensory receptors that provide sound amplification within the mammalian cochlea. Although OHCs appear susceptible to ageing, the progression of the pathophysiological changes in these cells is still poorly understood. By using mouse strains with a different progression of hearing loss (C57BL/6J, C57BL/6NTac, C57BL/6NTacCdh23+ , C3H/HeJ), we have identified morphological, physiological and molecular changes in ageing OHCs (9–12 kHz cochlear region). We show that by 6 months of age, OHCs from all strains underwent a reduction in surface area, which was not a sign of degeneration. Although the ageing OHCs retained a normal basolateral membrane protein profile, they showed a reduction in the size of the K+ current and non‐linear capacitance, a readout of prestin‐dependent electromotility. Despite these changes, OHCs have a normal V m and retain the ability to amplify sound, as distortion product otoacoustic emission thresholds were not affected in aged, good‐hearing mice (C3H/HeJ, C57BL/6NTacCdh23+ ). The loss of afferent synapses was present in all strains at 15 months. The number of efferent synapses per OHCs, defined as postsynaptic SK2 puncta, was reduced in aged OHCs of all strains apart from C3H mice. Several of the identified changes occurred in aged OHCs from all mouse strains, thus representing a general trait in the pathophysiological progression of age‐related hearing loss, possibly aimed at preserving functionality. We have also shown that the mechanoelectrical transduction (MET) current from OHCs of mice harbouring the Cdh23ahl allele is reduced with age, highlighting the possibility that changes in the MET apparatus could play a role in cochlear ageing
The RMS Survey: Resolving kinematic distance ambiguities towards a sample of compact HII regions using HI absorption
We present high-resolution HI data obtained using the Australia Telescope
Compact Array to resolve the near/far distance ambiguities towards a sample of
compact HII regions from the Red MSX Source (RMS) survey. The high resolution
data are complemented with lower resolution archival HI data extracted from the
Southern and VLA Galactic Plane surveys. We resolve the distance ambiguity for
nearly all of the 105 sources where the continuum was strong enough to allow
analysis of the HI absorption line structure. This represents another step in
the determination of distances to the total RMS sample, which with over 1,000
massive young stellar objects and compact HII regions, is the largest and most
complete sample of its kind. The full sample will allow the distribution of

Are chimpanzees really so poor at understanding imperative pointing? Some new data and an alternative view of canine and ape social cognition
There is considerable interest in comparative research on different species’ abilities to respond to human communicative cues such as gaze and pointing. It has been reported that some canines perform significantly better than monkeys and apes on tasks requiring the comprehension of either declarative or imperative pointing and these differences have been attributed to domestication in dogs. Here we tested a sample of chimpanzees on a task requiring comprehension of an imperative request and show that, though there are considerable individual differences, the performance by the apes rival those reported in pet dogs. We suggest that small differences in methodology can have a pronounced influence on performance on these types of tasks. We further suggest that basic differences in subject sampling, subject recruitment and rearing experiences have resulted in a skewed representation of canine abilities compared to those of monkeys and apes
Oral beclomethasone dipropionate is an effective treatment for immune checkpoint inhibitor induced colitis.
INTRODUCTION: Systemic corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatment for immune checkpoint inhibitor induced (CPI) colitis but are associated with complications including life-threatening infection. The topically acting oral corticosteroid beclomethasone dipropionate (BD) is an effective treatment for mild to moderate flares of ulcerative colitis, and has fewer side effects than systemic corticosteroids. We hypothesized that BD would be an effective treatment for CPI-induced colitis. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of all patients who started BD for CPI-induced colitis at three UK cancer centers between November 2017 and October 2020. All patients underwent endoscopic assessment and biopsy. The initial regimen of BD was 5 mg once daily for 28 days. Data were collected from electronic patient records. Clinical outcomes were assessed at 28 days after initiation of treatment. RESULTS: Twenty-two patients (14 male) with a median age of 64 (range 45-84) with CPI-induced colitis were treated with BD. At baseline, the median number of loose stools in a 24-hour period was six (common terminology criteria for adverse events, CTCAE grade diarrhea=2). Thirteen patients (59%) were dependent on systemic corticosteroids prior to starting BD. Baseline sigmoidoscopy showed moderate inflammation (Mayo Endoscopic Score (MES) = 2) in two patients (9%), mild inflammation (MES=1) in nine patients (41%) and normal findings (MES=0) in eleven patients (50%). Twenty patients (91%) had histopathological features of inflammation. All 22 patients (100%) had a clinical response to BD and 21 (95%) achieved clinical remission with a return to baseline stool frequency (CTCAE diarrhea=0). Ten patients (45%) had symptomatic relapse on cessation of BD, half within 7 days of stopping. All patients recaptured response on restarting BD. No adverse events were reported in patients treated with BD. CONCLUSIONS: Topical BD represents an appealing alternative option to systemic immunosuppressive treatments to treat colonic inflammation. In this study, BD was effective and safe at inducing remission in CPI-induced colitis, which was refractory to systemic corticosteroids. Further randomized studies are needed to confirm these findings and determine the optimum dosing regimen
