    Impact of Organizational Career Management Activities on Organizational Commitment of Early, Mid, and Late Stage Career Professionals

    Organizational commitment continues to be studied by researchers and practitioners due to the presumed relationships with important organizational outcomes such as turnover, performance, and absenteeism. Organizations are challenged with identifying practices such as organizational career management activities that will reduce costs associated with low performance and high turnover while recognizing the diversity of their workforces as it relates to early, mid, and late stage career professionals. Understanding the needs and unique characteristics of early, mid, and late career stage professionals can better inform organizations’ decision to invest in organizational career management activities to enhance organizational commitment across all three career stages. In this study, the impact of the availability and utilization of organizational career management activities on organizational commitment is studied through the lens of Perceived Organizational Support Theory. Results indicate that the availability and utilization of organizational career management activities have a positive relationship with perceived organizational support and perceived organizational support has a positive relationship with affective, normative, and continuance organizational commitment. Organizational career management activities do not have a direct relationship with turnover intentions, however, implications of varying levels of affective, normative, and continuance commitment are discussed. Further, no difference was found between early, mid, and late stage career professionals contradicting previous studies and informing future studies

    The Eco-Epidemiology of Pacific Coast Tick Fever in California

    Rickettsia philipii (type strain “Rickettsia 364D”), the etiologic agent of Pacific Coast tick fever (PCTF), is transmitted to people by the Pacific Coast tick, Dermacentor occidentalis. Following the first confirmed human case of PCTF in 2008, 13 additional human cases have been reported in California, more than half of which were pediatric cases. The most common features of PCTF are the presence of at least one necrotic lesion known as an eschar (100%), fever (85%), and headache (79%); four case-patients required hospitalization and four had multiple eschars. Findings presented here implicate the nymphal or larval stages of D. occidentalis as the primary vectors of R. philipii to people. Peak transmission risk from ticks to people occurs in late summer. Rickettsia philipii DNA was detected in D. occidentalis ticks from 15 of 37 California counties. Similarly, non-pathogenic Rickettsia rhipicephali DNA was detected in D. occidentalis in 29 of 38 counties with an average prevalence of 12.0% in adult ticks. In total, 5,601 ticks tested from 2009 through 2015 yielded an overall R. philipii infection prevalence of 2.1% in adults, 0.9% in nymphs and a minimum infection prevalence of 0.4% in larval pools. Although most human cases of PCTF have been reported from northern California, acarological surveillance suggests that R. philipii may occur throughout the distribution range of D. occidentalis

    The Clinically Actionable Molecular Profile of Early versus Late-Stage Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, an Individual Age and Sex Propensity-Matched Pair Analysis

    Background: Despite meticulous surgery for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), relapse is as high as 70% at 5 years. Many institutions do not conduct reflexive molecular testing on early stage specimens, although targeted gene therapy may extend life by years in the event of recurrence. This ultimately delays definitive treatment with additional biopsy risking suboptimal tissue acquisition and quality for molecular testing. Objective: To compare molecular profiles of genetic alterations in early and late NSCLC to provide evidence that reflexive molecular testing provides clinically valuable information. Methods: A single-center propensity matched retrospective analysis was conducted using prospectively collected data. Adults with early and late-stage NSCLC had tissue subject to targeted panel-based NGS. Frequencies of putative drivers were compared, with 1:3 matching on the propensity score; p < 0.05 deemed statistically significant. Results: In total, 635 NSCLC patients underwent NGS (59 early, 576 late); 276 (43.5%) females; age 70.9 (±10.2) years; never smokers 140 (22.0%); 527 (83.0%) adenocarcinomas. Unadjusted frequencies of EGFR mutations were higher in the early cohort (30% vs. 18%). Following adjustment for sex and smoking status, similar frequencies for both early and late NSCLC were observed for variants in EGFR, KRAS, ALK, MET, and ROS1. Conclusion: The frequency of clinically actionable variants in early and late-stage NSCLC was found to be similar, providing evidence that molecular profiling should be performed on surgical specimens. This pre-determined profile is essential to avoid treatment delay for patients who will derive clinical benefit from targeted systemic therapy, in the high likelihood of subsequent relapse
