A Reanalysis of Eurasian Population History: Ancient DNA Evidence of Population Affinities
Mitochondrial hypervariable region I genetic data from ancient populations at
two sites from Asia, Linzi in Shandong (northern China) and Egyin Gol in
Mongolia, were reanalyzed to detect population affinities. Data from a total of
51 modern populations were used to generate distance measures (Fst's) to the
two ancient populations. The tests first analyzed relationships at the regional
level, and then compiled the top regional matches for an overall comparison to
the two probe populations. The reanalysis showed that the Egyin Gol and Linzi
populations have clear distinctions in genetic affinity. The Egyin Gol
population as a whole appears to bear close affinities with modern populations
of northern East Asia. The Linzi population does seem to have some genetic
affinities with the West as suggested by the original analysis, though the
original attribution of "European-like" seems to be misleading. This study
suggests that the Linzi individuals are potentially related to early Iranians,
who are thought to have been widespread in parts of Central Eurasia and the
steppe regions in the first millennium BC, though some significant admixture
between a number of populations of varying origin cannot be ruled out. The
study also examines the effect of sequence length on this type of genetic data
analysis and provides analysis and explanation for the results of previous
studies on the Linzi sample as compared to this one.Comment: Keywords: d-loop, China, Mongolia, aDNA, mtDNA, Irania
Sexual health of young adults and age at first intercourse
Interest in the timing of first sexual intercourse has increased in recent years because of public health, social, and political concerns. Using a life-course theoretical perspective, I examined the connection between timing of first sexual intercourse and later sexual behavior and health outcomes by analyzing data from Waves I through III of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). The majority of respondents with a current sexual relationship engaged in combinations of various types of sexual behaviors. Almost 80% of these respondents included cunnilingus and fellatio as well as vaginal intercourse in the sexual repertoire of their current relationship, with over 20% engaging in these three sexual activities plus anal sex. Earlier age at first intercourse was associated with engaging in oral sex with a current partner for females, and with anal sex with a current partner for males and females. Early first intercourse was associated with higher odds of testing positive for chlamydial infection, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis among adolescents, but the association was not significant among young adults. By young adulthood, an older age at first intercourse was no longer protective against these sexually transmitted infections; young adults who had started having sex recently had similar levels of sexually transmitted infection as those who had been having sex through most of adolescence. Furthermore, timing of first intercourse was not associated with sexual coercion victimization or perpetration with a current partner. Reports of sexual coercion in current relationships indicated substantial levels of male victimization and female perpetration. This work expands upon the current understanding of first sexual intercourse and later sexual behavior and health, and carries important implications for health promotion education and policy
U5a1 Mitochondrial DNA Haplotype Identified in Eneolithic Skeleton from Shatar Chuluu, Mongolia
The mitochondrial haplotype U5a1 was identified from an Eneolithic grave associated with the Afanasievo archaeological culture in Bayankhongor Province, Erdenetsogt Township, at the site of Shatar Chuluu. This is the earliest appearance of a mtDNA haplotype associated with modern European populations on the Mongol Steppe. This evidence demonstrations that people with “western” mtDNA lived on the Mongol Steppe east of the Altai Mountains before the Bronze Age and refutes the notion that the Altai Mountains were a substantial barrier to gene flow and definitively expands the acknowledged range of the Afanasievo archaeological culture
Unidirectional Quantum Transport in Optically Driven -type Quantum Dot Chains
We predict a mechanism for achieving complete population inversion in a
continuously driven InAs/GaAs semiconductor quantum dot featuring -type
transitions. This highly nonequilibrium steady state is enabled by the
interplay between -type interband transitions and a non-Markovian
decoherence mechanism, introduced by acoustic phonons. The population trapping
mechanism is generalized to a chain of coupled emitters. Exploiting the
population inversion, we predict unidirectional excitation transport from one
end of the chain to the other without external bias, independent of the unitary
interdot coupling mechanism
Kunst Architektur - Denkform
The article shows the diverse interweaving of art and architecture, which are characterized by analogies and overlays as well as differences. The look at artistic concepts of the architecture of the present as well as interface conventions and movements of the past looks beyond the built object to media productions, modes of perception and ways of thinking that offer alternative perspectives and break with conventions
