    Conductivity tomography at two frequencies

    We present a new approach for crosshole radio tomography. Conductivity images of the investigated area are reconstructed from the ratio of the electric field intensities measured at two similar frequencies. The method largely avoids assumptions about the radiation pattern and in-situ intensity of the transmitting antenna, which introduce errors in conventional single-frequency crosshole electromagnetic-absorption tomography. Application of the method to field data achieved an improvement in resolution of anomalies over traditional single-frequency absorption tomography. The dual-frequency method is not a universal approach; it is suitable for moderately conductive media (>0.01 S/m) over the approximate frequency range 1-100 MHz

    Apollo 14: Some geochemical aspects

    Chemical analyses were obtained for five samples of Apollo 14 regolith fines, three 14230 core samples, soil clod 14049, breccias 14305 and 14319, 14310 basalt, and some separated phases. The chemical uniformity of these Apollo 14 samples indicates thorough mixing and/or uniform source rocks. Basalt 14310 can be matched well in composition by a four to one mixture of soil and plagioclase. The Eu(2+)/Eu(3+) ratios calculated for 14310 pigeonite and plagioclase are similar to those for Apollo 12 and 15 mare-type basalt phases; this indicates similar redox conditions. Apollo 14 samples are chemically similar to Apollo 12 and 15 KREEP as distinct from Apollo 11, 12, and 15 and Luna 16 mare-type basalts

    Neanderthal Use of Fish, Mammals, Birds, Starchy Plants and Wood 125-250,000 Years Ago

    Neanderthals are most often portrayed as big game hunters who derived the vast majority of their diet from large terrestrial herbivores while birds, fish and plants are seen as relatively unimportant or beyond the capabilities of Neanderthals. Although evidence for exploitation of other resources (small mammals, birds, fish, shellfish, and plants) has been found at certain Neanderthal sites, these are typically dismissed as unusual exceptions. The general view suggests that Neanderthal diet may broaden with time, but that this only occurs sometime after 50,000 years ago. We present evidence, in the form of lithic residue and use-wear analyses, for an example of a broad-based subsistence for Neanderthals at the site of Payre, Ardèche, France (beginning of MIS 5/end of MIS 6 to beginning of MIS 7/end of MIS 8; approximately 125–250,000 years ago). In addition to large terrestrial herbivores, Neanderthals at Payre also exploited starchy plants, birds, and fish. These results demonstrate a varied subsistence already in place with early Neanderthals and suggest that our ideas of Neanderthal subsistence are biased by our dependence on the zooarchaeological record and a deep-seated intellectual emphasis on big game hunting

    Revisiting Family Leisure Research and Critical Reflections on the Future of Family-Centered Scholarship

    In this special issue of Leisure Sciences, we examine the progress made and challenges ahead in research on leisure and families—20 years revisited. We consider what advancements have been made in family leisure research and potential new directions that family-centered scholars can look towards. We also consider the dominance of particular theoretical perspectives and methodological designs, and the limitations and consequences of such perspectives, to understand the complexities, diversity, and richness of the lived family experience. Emphasis is placed on the need for scholarship that explores diverse constructions of family and to provide a call to action for family-centered scholars to engage with broader global social issues

    Rethinking use-wear analysis and experimentation as applied to the study of past hominin tool use

    In prehistoric human populations, technologies played a fundamental role in the acquisition of different resources and are represented in the main daily living activities, such as with bone, wooden, and stone-tipped spears for hunting, and chipped-stone tools for butchering. Considering that paleoanthropologists and archeologists are focused on the study of different processes involved in the evolution of human behavior, investigating how hominins acted in the past through the study of evidence on archeological artifacts is crucial. Thus, investigat ing tool use is of major importance for a comprehensive understanding of all processes that characterize human choices of raw materials, techniques, and tool types. Many functional assumptions of tool use have been based on tool design and morphology according to archeologists’ interpretations and ethnographic observations. Such assumptions are used as baselines when inferring human behavior and have driven an improvement in the methods and techniques employed in functional studies over the past few decades. Here, while arguing that use-wear analysis is a key discipline to assess past hominin tool use and to interpret the organization and variability of artifact types in the archeological record, we aim to review and discuss the current state-of-the-art methods, protocols, and their limitations. In doing so, our discussion focuses on three main topics: (1) the need for fundamental improvements by adopting established methods and techniques from similar research fields, (2) the need to implement and combine different levels of experimentation, and (3) the crucial need to establish standards and protocols in order to improve data quality, standard ization, repeatability, and reproducibility. By adopting this perspective, we believe that studies will increase the reliability and applicability of use-wear methods on tool function. The need for a holistic approach that combines not only use-wear traces but also tool technology, design, curation, durability, and efficiency is also debated and revised.     Societal-level versus individual-level predictions of ethical behavior: a 48-society study of collectivism and individualism

    Is the societal-level of analysis sufficient today to understand the values of those in the global workforce? Or are individual-level analyses more appropriate for assessing the influence of values on ethical behaviors across country workforces? Using multi-level analyses for a 48-society sample, we test the utility of both the societal-level and individual-level dimensions of collectivism and individualism values for predicting ethical behaviors of business professionals. Our values-based behavioral analysis indicates that values at the individual-level make a more significant contribution to explaining variance in ethical behaviors than do values at the societal-level. Implicitly, our findings question the soundness of using societal-level values measures. Implications for international business research are discussed

    Expanding understandings of wellbeing through researching women's experiences of intergenerational somatic dance classes

    Engaging a feminist ethnographic methodology, this article offers a discussion of women’s embodied experiences of wellbeing in intergenerational somatic dance classes. Somatic dance classes aim to develop embodied awareness, support ease and freedom in movement, and offer opportunities for creativity, agency and reflection. Drawing on in-depth interviews, observation and autoethnographic vignettes, three themes emerged from the empirical material that expand understandings of wellbeing as a fluid and dynamic experience, reveal the value for women in moving for movement’s sake, and identify the significance of intergenerational contexts for moving together. As a consequence, this research offers insight into ways in which women participating in somatic dance classes have re-interpreted wellbeing practices, ‘re-claiming’ wellbeing from circulating neoliberal, self-improvement and productivity agendas, and instead, dancing into wellbeing

Through an examination of the ‘televisual tourism’ centred around the successful TV series Breaking Bad, we scrutinise the multiple modes of sensorial and embodied travel experience enjoyed by fans of the show as they consume their way around the show’s sites, scenes, and tastes in the city of Albuquerque . This exploitation of media textuality through fan tourism is, we suggest, centred upon a carefully managed commodification of crime, criminality and transgression

    Bathymetry and seafloor mapping via one dimensional inversion and conductivity depth imaging of AEM

    This study examines the application of airborne electromagnetic (AEM) methodologies to bathymetry in shallow seawater and to map seafloor conductivity. Conductivity versus depth sections have been generated from a recent helicopter-borne DIGHEMV survey (operating vertical coaxial and horizontal coplanar transmitter-receiver coil geometries) of lower Port Jackson, Sydney Harbour. The sea depth ranges from about 1 to 30 m. Acoustic bathymetric soundings and marine seismic survey data provide the true seawater layer thickness and estimates of depth to bedrock respectively over most of the EM survey region. This complementary data can be used to evaluate the accuracy of airborne electromagnetic bathymetry. The efficacy of 1D conductivity inversion and rapid conductivity-depth imaging was investigated for shallow seawater overlaying marine sand sediments and sandstone. The inversion constructs layered conductivities which satisfy the AEM data to an accuracy consistent with the observational uncertainties. Inverted frequencies ranged from 328 to 55300 Hz. Resolution of the sea depth gave good agreement with known bathymetry (within about 10% or better) when inversion was unconstrained. Approximate conductivity-depth images obtained using program "EM Flow" gave similar agreement. Both inversion methods clearly identify the location and burial depth of higher resistivity regions associated with shallow marine sandstone bedrock. In addition to measuring water depths to about 30 m, this study has shown that the AEM DIGHEM technique provides a capability for remote sensing of seabed properties and offers the potential to detect areas of shallow bedrock and differentiate between consolidated and unconsolidated sediment in areas of seawater deeper than 25 m
