    L-H transition dynamics in fluid turbulence simulations with neoclassical force balance

    Spontaneous transport barrier generation at the edge of a magnetically confined plasma is investigated. To this end, a model of electrostatic turbulence in three-dimensional geometry is extended to account for the impact of friction between trapped and passing particles on the radial electric field. Non-linear flux-driven simulations are carried out, and it is shown that considering the radial and temporal variations of the neoclassical friction coefficients allows for a transport barrier to be generated above a threshold of the input power

    New Critical Compilations of Atomic Transition Probabilities for Neutral and Singly Ionized Carbon, Nitrogen, and Iron

    We have undertaken new critical assessments and tabulations of the transition probabilities of important lines of these spectra. For Fe I and Fe II, we have carried out a complete re-assessment and update, and we have relied almost exclusively on the literature of the last 15 years. Our updates for C I, C II and N I, N II primarily address the persistent lower transitions as well as a greatly expanded number of forbidden lines (M1, M2, and E2). For these transitions, sophisticated multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock (MCHF) calculations have been recently carried out, which have yielded data considerably improved and often appreciably different from our 1996 NIST compilation

    This research is intended to examine the influence of fiscal decentralization on economic growth, poverty, employment, and welfare at regencies/municipalities level in Central Java Province. Research population consist of 29 regencies and 6 municipalities, employing secondary data from Central Bureau of Statistic of Central Java Province and regencies/municipalities level in Central Java Province within the period of 2001 up to 2005. Data analysis is conducted by using path analysis with AMOS program software. The results of this study indicate that, first fiscal decentralization has a positive and significant effect on economic growth. Second, economic growth has a positive and significant effect on employment rate. Third, economic growth has a negative and significant effect on poverty. Forth, economic growth has a positive and significant effect on welfare. Fifth, employment rate has a negative and significant effect on welfare. Sixth, poverty has a negative and significant effect on welfare at regencies/municipalities level in Central Java Province

    Non-substitutional single-atom defects in the Ge_(1-x)Sn_x alloy

    Ge_(1-x)Sn_x alloys have proved difficult to form at large x, contrary to what happens with other group IV semiconductor combinations. However, at low x they are typical examples of well-behaved substitutional compounds, which is desirable for harnessing the electronic properties of narrow band semiconductors. In this paper, we propose the appearance of another kind of single-site defect (β−Sn\beta-Sn), consisting of a single Sn atom in the center of a Ge divacancy, that may account for these facts. Accordingly, we examine the electronic and structural properties of these alloys by performing extensive numerical ab-initio calculations around local defects. The results show that the environment of the β\beta defect relaxes towards a cubic octahedral configuration, facilitating the nucleation of metallic white tin and its segregation, as found in amorphous samples. Using the information stemming from these local defect calculations, we built a simple statistical model to investigate at which concentration these β\beta defects can be formed in thermal equilibrium. These results agree remarkably well with experimental findings, concerning the critical concentration above which the homogeneous alloys cannot be formed at room temperature. Our model also predicts the observed fact that at lower temperature the critical concentration increases. We also performed single site effective-field calculations of the electronic structure, which further support our hypothesis.Comment: 12 pages, 1 table, 16 figure

    Synthesis of novel bisphosphorylimides based on Staudinger reaction

    A series of bisphosphorylimides based on the reaction sequence of Atherton-Todd and Staudinger reaction were synthesized. These bisphosphorylimides containing phosphorus in different chemical environments, while the reaction sequence is using mild conditions and moreover can be synthesized in an one-pot procedure. The molecular structures were revealed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and x-ray crystallography. The stability of the bisphosphorylimides against hydrolysis and thermal influences was tested which allows an initial estimation about the usage as flame retardant

    Electrokinetic behavior of two touching inhomogeneous biological cells and colloidal particles: Effects of multipolar interactions

    We present a theory to investigate electro-kinetic behavior, namely, electrorotation and dielectrophoresis under alternating current (AC) applied fields for a pair of touching inhomogeneous colloidal particles and biological cells. These inhomogeneous particles are treated as graded ones with physically motivated model dielectric and conductivity profiles. The mutual polarization interaction between the particles yields a change in their respective dipole moments, and hence in the AC electrokinetic spectra. The multipolar interactions between polarized particles are accurately captured by the multiple images method. In the point-dipole limit, our theory reproduces the known results. We find that the multipolar interactions as well as the spatial fluctuations inside the particles can affect the AC electrokinetic spectra significantly.Comment: Revised version with minor changes: References added and discussion extende

    Off-diagonal (transverse) effects in micro-patterned geometries are predicted and analyzed within the general frame of linear response theory, relating applied presure gradient and electric field to flow and electric current. These effects could contribute to the design of pumps, mixers or flow detectors. Shape and charge density modulations are proposed as a means to obtain sizeable transverse effects, as demonstrated by focusing on simple geometries and using the lubrication approximation.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

    The effect of Coulomb interaction at ferromagnetic-paramagnetic metallic perovskite junctions

    We study the effect of Coulomb interactions in transition metal oxides junctions. In this paper we analyze charge transfer at the interface of a three layer ferromagnetic-paramagnetic-ferromagnetic metallic oxide system. We choose a charge model considering a few atomic planes within each layer and obtain results for the magnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic layers. For large number of planes in the paramagnetic spacer we find that the coupling oscillates with the same period as in RKKY but the amplitude is sensitive to the Coulomb energy. At small spacer thickness however, large differences may appear as function of : the number of electrons per atom in the ferromagnetics and paramagnetics materials, the dielectric constant at each component, and the charge defects at the interface plane emphasizing the effects of charge transfer.Comment: tex file and 7 figure

    Effect of medium conductivity and composition on the uptake of propidium iodide into electropermeabilized myeloma cells

    AbstractThe effects of ionic composition and conductivity of the medium on electropermeabilization of the plasma membrane of mammalian cells were studied. Temporal and spatial uptake of propidium iodide (PI) into field-treated cells was measured by means of flow cytometry, spectrofluorimetry and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Murine myeloma cells were electropulsed in iso-osmolar solutions. These contained 10–100 μg ml−1 PI at different conductivities (0.8–14 mS cm−1) and ionic strengths, adjusted by varying concentrations of K+, Na+, Cl− and SO42−. Field-induced incorporation of PI into reversibly permeabilized cells was (almost) independent of ionic composition and strength (at a fixed medium conductivity), but increased dramatically with decreasing medium conductivity at a fixed field strength. The time-course of PI uptake (which apparently reflected the resealing process of the membrane) could be fitted by a single-exponential curve (relaxation time about 2 min in the absence of Ca2+) and was independent of medium conductivity and composition. These and other data suggested that the expansion of the ‘electroleaks’ during the breakdown process is field-controlled and depends, therefore, on the (conductivity-dependent) discharging process of the permeabilized membrane. The threshold field strength for dye uptake increased with increasing K+ concentration (about 0.6 kV cm−1 in K+-free, NaCl-containing medium and about 0.9 kV cm−1 in 30 mM KCl-containing medium). Also, the spatial uptake pattern of PI shifted from an asymmetric permeation through the cell hemisphere facing the anode to a more symmetric uptake through both hemispheres. These results suggested that the generated potential is superimposed on the (K+-dependent) resting membrane potential. Taking this into account, the breakdown voltage of the membrane was estimated to be about 1 V
