    Copy number deletion burden is associated with cognitive, structural, and resting-state network differences in patients with schizophrenia

    Total burden of copy number deletions has been implicated in schizophrenia risk and has been associated with reduced cognitive functioning. The current study aims to replicate the cognitive findings and investigate regional grey and white matter volumes. Moreover, it will explore resting-state networks for correlations between functional connectivity and total deletion burden. All imaging differences will be investigated for correlations with cognitive differences. Seventy-eight patients with chronic schizophrenia, who formed a subset of a large genome-wide association study (GWAS), were assessed for intelligence, 34 had structural magnetic resonance imaging, 33 had resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, and 32 had diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Total deletion burden was negatively associated with IQ performance and positively associated with regional volumes in the striatum bilaterally and in the right superior temporal gyrus and white-matter in the corpus callosum. Correlations were identified between deletion burden and both hyper and hypoconnectivity within the default-mode network and hypoconnectivity within the cognitive control network. The functional connectivity correlations with deletion burden were also correlated with the IQ differences identified. Total deletion burden affects regional volumes and resting-state functional connectivity in key brain networks in patients with schizophrenia. Moreover, effects of deletions on cognitive functioning in may be due to inefficiency of key brain networks as identified by dysconnectivity in resting-state networks

    The parental care behaviour of Paratilapia polleni (Perciformes, Labroidei), a phylogenetically primitive cichlid from Madagascar, with a discussion of the evolution of maternal care in the family Cichlidae

    The parental behaviour of the Madagascan cichlid, Paratilapia polleni , was studied in the laboratory. According to current hypotheses of phylogenetic intrarelationship for the family Cichlidae, Paratilapia is a representative of a phylogenetically primitive cichlid lineage, and as such is of particular interest in comparative evolutionary studies. Given the basal phylogenetic placement of Paratilapia it seems reasonable to expect that, if maternal participation in brood care arose within the extant Cichlidae, then the proposed plesiomorphic system of extensive male care of eggs and embryos may be retained in this taxon. This is not the case, and already by the fertilized-egg interval male and female roles in Paratilapia are strongly differentiated with the female as the primary care giver. In addition to specialized behavioural roles, a unique egg morphology and mobile egg mass is described for Paratilapia .     The electromagnetic counterpart of the binary neutron star merger LIGO/Virgo GW170817. I. Discovery of the optical counterpart using the Dark Energy Camera

    We present the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) discovery of the optical counterpart of the first binary neutron star merger detected through gravitational wave emission, GW170817. Our observations commenced 10.5 hours post-merger, as soon as the localization region became accessible from Chile. We imaged 70 deg2 in the i and z bands, covering 93% of the initial integrated localization probability, to a depth necessary to identify likely optical counterparts (e.g., a kilonova). At 11.4 hours post-merger we detected a bright optical transient located 10:600 from the nucleus of NGC4993 at redshift z = 0:0098, consistent (for H0 = 70 km s-1 Mpc-1) with the distance of 40±8 Mpc reported by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the Virgo Collaboration (LVC). At detection the transient had magnitudes i=17.3 and z=17.4, and thus an absolute magnitude of Mi = -15.7, in the luminosity range expected for a kilonova. We identified 1,500 potential transient candidates. Applying simple selection criteria aimed at rejecting background events such as supernovae, we find the transient associated with NGC4993 as the only remaining plausible counterpart, and reject chance coincidence at the 99.5% confidence level. We therefore conclude that the optical counterpart we have identified near NGC4993 is associated with GW170817. This discovery ushers in the era of multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves, and demonstrates the power of DECam to identify the optical counterparts of gravitational-wave sources

    Effect of hyperventilation on cerebral blood flow in traumatic head injury: clinical relevance and monitoring correlates

    Objective: To investigate the effect of hyperventilation on cerebral blood flow in traumatic brain injury. Design: A prospective interventional study. Setting: A specialist neurocritical care unit. Patients: Fourteen healthy volunteers and 33 patients within 7 days of closed head injury. Interventions: All subjects underwent positron emission tomography imaging of cerebral blood flow. In patients, PaCO2 was reduced from 36 +/- 1 to 29 +/- 1 torr (4.8 +/- 0.1 to 3.9 +/- 0.1 kPa) and measurements repeated. Jugular venous saturation (SjvO2 ) and arteriovenous oxygen content differences (AVDO2 ) were monitored in 25 patients and values related to positron emission tomography variables. Measurements and main results: The volumes of critically hypoperfused and hyperperfused brain (HypoBV and HyperBV, in milliliters) were calculated based on thresholds of 10 and 55 mL.100g(-1).min(-1), respectively. Whereas baseline HypoBV was significantly higher in patients ( p50%) and AVDO2 (<9 mL/mL) did not exceed global ischemic thresholds. However, despite these beneficial effects, hyperventilation shifted the cerebral blood flow distribution curve toward the hypoperfused range, with a decrease in global cerebral blood flow (31 +/- 1 to 23 +/- 1 mL.100g(-1).min(-1); p<.0001) and an increase in HypoBV (22 [1-141] to 51 [2-428] mL; p<.0001). Hyperventilation-induced increases in HypoBV were apparently nonlinear, with a threshold value between 34 and 38 torr (4.5-5 kPa). Conclusions: Hyperventilation increases the volume of severely hypoperfused tissue within the injured brain, despite improvements in cerebral perfusion pressure and intracranial pressure. Significant hyperperfusion is uncommon, even at a time when conventional clinical management includes a role for modest hyperventilation. These reductions in regional cerebral perfusion are not associated with ischemia, as defined by global monitors of oxygenation, but may represent regions of potentially ischemic brain tissue
