    Specialization and Values as Inputs to Decision-Making Mining Managers

    L'objet du prĂ©sent article est de dĂ©couvrir ce que les dirigeants de l'industrie miniĂšre au Canada considĂšrent comme le plus important pour la direction de leurs entreprises. En d'autres termes, Ă  quel systĂšme de valeurs se rĂ©fĂšrent-ils? S'intĂ©ressent-ils davantage aux personnes qu'aux choses matĂ©rielles?Pour tenter de rĂ©pondre Ă  ces questions, l'auteur s'est inspirĂ© de deux modĂšles d'analyse de comportement: l'un mis au point par England et ses collĂšgues, fondĂ© sur les valeurs de jugement personnel, l'autre appuyĂ© sur la thĂ©orie de Frost et de Barnowe oĂč il s'agit de savoir si les intĂ©ressĂ©s sont portĂ©s plutĂŽt vers les choses que les personnes.L'enquĂȘte fut faite Ă  partir d'une liste de 594 membres de l'Institut canadien des mines et de la mĂ©tallurgie en Colombie Britannique en Alberta et dans le territoire du Yukon. Il faut aussi noter que l'enquĂȘte porte sur les dirigeants d'entreprises situĂ©es dans des petits centres miniers. On a transmis par la poste Ă  ces gens un questionnaire se rapportant Ă  66 concepts et 189 ont effectivement rĂ©pondu.Lorsque les donnĂ©es de cette enquĂȘte furent compilĂ©es, elles ont donnĂ© le rĂ©sultat suivant: selon le systĂšme mis au point par England, 76 des 189 rĂ©pondants ou 38% pouvaient ĂȘtre considĂ©rĂ©s comme essentiellement pragmatiques, 65 ou 35% de ces dirigeants fondaient leurs attitudes sur un corps d'idĂ©es arrĂȘtĂ©es, 4% Ă©taient plutĂŽt de type affectif et 22% avaient une orientation plutĂŽt mĂ©langĂ©e. D'autre part, suivant la thĂ©orie de Frost et Barnowe, ces dirigeants se partageaient en deux groupes principaux. On pouvait classer 67 d'entre eux parmi les « gĂ©nĂ©ralistes », c'est-Ă -dire qu'ils portaient autant d'attention aux personnes qu'aux choses; 79 d'entre eux s'intĂ©ressaient strictement aux questions d'ordre matĂ©riel; 13 mettaient l'accent sur la personne et 22 pouvaient ĂȘtre rangĂ©s dans une catĂ©gorie que l'auteur dĂ©signe sous le nom de « non-spĂ©cialistes ».De l'Ă©tude ci-dessus, on peut tirer deux conclusions:En premier lieu, les gĂ©rants de sociĂ©tĂ©s miniĂšres canadiennes, dans les petits centres, se prĂ©occupent principalement du fonctionnement de l'entreprise et ils ne s'intĂ©ressent guĂšre aux valeurs sociales d'ensemble, bien-ĂȘtre des travailleurs, environnement, etc.. Ce sont des technologues intĂ©ressĂ©s Ă  leur travail pour qui l'exercice de leur tĂąche est d'importance primordiale.DeuxiĂšmement, les diffĂ©rences d'orientation entre eux reposent sur la perception qu'ils se font du travail humain. Ceci se vĂ©rifie davantage chez ceux qui ont Ă©tĂ© obligĂ©s de prendre des dĂ©cisions majeures se rapportant aux travailleurs et au rĂŽle que ceux-ci tiennent dans l'entreprise.This thrust of this paper is to explore the objectives which mining managers perceive as important for effective organizational functioning in terms of their values, of the sense they make of the world around them in two specific, fundamental areas, orientation toward people and toward things, and of the interaction between managerial values and this orientation

    A DNA-binding Molecule Targeting the Adaptive Hypoxic Response in Multiple Myeloma has Potent Anti-tumor Activity

    Multiple myeloma is incurable and invariably becomes resistant to chemotherapy. Although the mechanisms remain unclear, hypoxic conditions in the bone marrow have been implicated in contributing to multiple myeloma progression, angiogenesis, and resistance to chemotherapy. These effects occur via adaptive cellular responses mediated by hypoxia-inducible transcription factors (HIF), and targeting HIFs can have anticancer effects in both solid and hematologic malignancies. Here, it was found that in most myeloma cell lines tested, HIF1α, but not HIF2α expression was oxygen dependent, and this could be explained by the differential expression of the regulatory prolyl hydroxylase isoforms. The anti–multiple myeloma effects of a sequence-specific DNA-binding pyrrole-imidazole (Py-Im) polyamide (HIF-PA), which disrupts the HIF heterodimer from binding to its cognate DNA sequences, were also investigated. HIF-PA is cell permeable, localizes to the nuclei, and binds specific regions of DNA with an affinity comparable with that of HIFs. Most of the multiple myeloma cells were resistant to hypoxia-mediated apoptosis, and HIF-PA treatment could overcome this resistance in vitro. Using xenograft models, it was determined that HIF-PA significantly decreased tumor volume and increased hypoxic and apoptotic regions within solid tumor nodules and the growth of myeloma cells engrafted in the bone marrow. This provides a rationale for targeting the adaptive cellular hypoxic response of the O_2-dependent activation of HIFα using polyamides

    The burden of peripheral intravenous catheters in older hospital inpatients : a national cross-sectional study part of the One Million Global Peripheral Intravenous Catheters Collaboration

    Objectives: To investigate the burden of peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) in older hospitalised patients. Methods: A cross-sectional prospective observational study (2014/2015) to describe the characteristics, indications and outcomes of PIVCs among patients aged ≄65 from 65 Australian hospitals. Results: Amongst 2179 individual PIVCs (in 2041 patients, mean age 77.6 years, 45% female, 58% in NSW), 43% were inserted by doctors and 74% used that day, meaning 25% were ‘idle’. Overall, 18% (393/2179) exhibited signs of PIVC-related complications. Most commonly exhibited PIVC-related complications were tenderness (4.1%) and local redness (1.8%). Nearly one in three (29.1%) dressings was soiled, loosened or had come off, and only 36.8% had the time and date documented on the dressing. Both infusing IV medications (aOR 1.74, 95% CI 1.28–2.38, p 84 years) was independently associated with lower likelihood of a high score (aOR 0.71, 95% CI 0.54–0.94, p = 0.02). Conclusions: Given 1 in 5 PIVCs were identified with having complications, further research should focus on optimising PIVC use in older patients

    Common neural basis of motor sequence learning and word recognition and its relation with individual differences in reading skill

    To investigate the neural basis of a common statistical learning mechanism involved in motor sequence learning and decoding, we recorded brain activation from participants during a serial reaction time (SRT) task and a word reading task using functional magnetic resonance imaging. In the SRT task, a manual response was made depending on the location of a visual cue, and the order of the locations was either fixed or random. In the word reading task, visual words were passively presented. In the inferior frontal gyrus pars triangularis (IFGpTr) and the insula, differences in activation between the ordered and random condition in the SRT task and activation to printed words in the word reading task were correlated with the participants' decoding ability. We speculate that extraction of statistically predictable patterns in the IFGpTr and insula contributes to both motor sequence learning and orthographic learning, and therefore predicts individual differences in decoding skill

    An enhanced surface passivation effect in InGaN/GaN disk-in-nanowire light emitting diodes for mitigating Shockley-Read-Hall recombination

    We present a detailed study of the effects of dangling bond passivation and the comparison of different sulfide passivation processes on the properties of InGaN/GaN quantum-disk (Qdisk)-in-nanowire based light emitting diodes (NW-LEDs). Our results demonstrated the first organic sulfide passivation process for nitride nanowires (NWs). The results from Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that octadecylthiol (ODT) effectively passivated the surface states, and altered the surface dynamic charge, and thereby recovered the band-edge emission. The effectiveness of the process with passivation duration was also studied. Moreover, we also compared the electro-optical performance of NW-LEDs emitting at green wavelength before and after ODT passivation. We have shown that the Shockley–Read–Hall (SRH) non-radiative recombination of NW-LEDs can be greatly reduced after passivation by ODT, which led to a much faster increasing trend of quantum efficiency and higher peak efficiency. Our results highlighted the possibility of employing this technique to further design and produce high performance NW-LEDs and NW-lasers

    Molecular structures of the basic copper arsenate minerals olivenite, cornubite, cornwallite, and clinoclase were studied using a combination of infrared emission spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Infrared emission spectra of the basic copper arsenates were obtained over the temperature range 100 to 1000°C. The IR emission spectra of the four minerals are different, in line with differences in crystal structure and composition. The Raman spectra are similar, particularly in the OH-stretching region, but characteristic differences in the deformation regions are observed. Differences are also observed in the arsenate stretching and bending regions. Infrared emission studies show that the minerals are completely dehydroxylated by 550°C

    Targeted prevention of common mental health disorders in university students: randomised controlled trial of a transdiagnostic trait-focused web-based intervention

    Background: A large proportion of university students show symptoms of common mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety, substance use disorders and eating disorders. Novel interventions are required that target underlying factors of multiple disorders.<p></p> Aims: To evaluate the efficacy of a transdiagnostic trait-focused web-based intervention aimed at reducing symptoms of common mental disorders in university students.<p></p> Method: Students were recruited online (n = 1047, age: M = 21.8, SD = 4.2) and categorised into being at high or low risk for mental disorders based on their personality traits. Participants were allocated to a cognitive-behavioural trait-focused (n = 519) or a control intervention (n = 528) using computerised simple randomisation. Both interventions were fully automated and delivered online (trial registration: ISRCTN14342225). Participants were blinded and outcomes were self-assessed at baseline, at 6 weeks and at 12 weeks after registration. Primary outcomes were current depression and anxiety, assessed on the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ9) and Generalised Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD7). Secondary outcome measures focused on alcohol use, disordered eating, and other outcomes.<p></p> Results: Students at high risk were successfully identified using personality indicators and reported poorer mental health. A total of 520 students completed the 6-week follow-up and 401 students completed the 12-week follow-up. Attrition was high across intervention groups, but comparable to other web-based interventions. Mixed effects analyses revealed that at 12-week follow up the trait-focused intervention reduced depression scores by 3.58 (p<.001, 95%CI [5.19, 1.98]) and anxiety scores by 2.87 (p = .018, 95%CI [1.31, 4.43]) in students at high risk. In high-risk students, between group effect sizes were 0.58 (depression) and 0.42 (anxiety). In addition, self-esteem was improved. No changes were observed regarding the use of alcohol or disordered eating.<p></p> Conclusions This study suggests that a transdiagnostic web-based intervention for university students targeting underlying personality risk factors may be a promising way of preventing common mental disorders with a low-intensity intervention

    Phase 1 Trial of Antibody NI006 for Depletion of Cardiac Transthyretin Amyloid

    BACKGROUND Transthyretin amyloid (ATTR) cardiomyopathy is a progressive and fatal disease caused by misfolded transthyretin. Despite advances in slowing disease progression, there is no available treatment that depletes ATTR from the heart for the amelioration of cardiac dysfunction. NI006 is a recombinant human anti-ATTR antibody that was developed for the removal of ATTR by phagocytic immune cells. METHODS In this phase 1, double-blind trial, we randomly assigned (in a 2:1 ratio) 40 patients with wild-type or variant ATTR cardiomyopathy and chronic heart failure to receive intravenous infusions of either NI006 or placebo every 4 weeks for 4 months. Patients were sequentially enrolled in six cohorts that received ascending doses (ranging from 0.3 to 60 mg per kilogram of body weight). After four infusions, patients were enrolled in an open-label extension phase in which they received eight infusions of NI006 with stepwise increases in the dose. The safety and pharmacokinetic profiles of NI006 were assessed, and cardiac imaging studies were performed. RESULTS The use of NI006 was associated with no apparent drug-related serious adverse events. The pharmacokinetic profile of NI006 was consistent with that of an IgG antibody, and no antidrug antibodies were detected. At doses of at least 10 mg per kilogram, cardiac tracer uptake on scintigraphy and extracellular volume on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, both of which are imaging-based surrogate markers of cardiac amyloid load, appeared to be reduced over a period of 12 months. The median N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide and troponin T levels also seemed to be reduced. CONCLUSIONS In this phase 1 trial of the recombinant human antibody NI006 for the treatment of patients with ATTR cardiomyopathy and heart failure, the use of NI006 was associated with no apparent drug-related serious adverse events.
