    The report, Aging in the United States, finds that baby boomers who are at retirement age are in worse health compared with previous generations. More of them are living with chronic conditions such as high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease; all which require medication. The report also anticipates the number of people with dementia could nearly triple in the coming decades, resulting in senior adults requiring more assistance with daily activities. Our product intends to enhance the quality of life of the older adult population by providing a pill dispenser that creates convenience with alerts and notifications. This makes the dosage easily accessible to those with cognitive and other impairments, and helps these adults to live a healthier lifestyle all the while minimizing the stress involved and time needed to take their medication. The demographics for our customer base include those who are ages 65+ who have difficulty with memory, individuals who live with multiple diseases/chronic conditions, and elderly individuals who live independently and require regular assistance. We will reach our most relevant market by selling our product individually and also by providing access to hospitals, insurance companies, and care providers.     Flight test results from a supercritical mission adaptive wing with smooth variable camber

    The mission adaptive wing (MAW) consisted of leading- and trailing-edge variable-camber surfaces that could be deflected in flight to provide a near-ideal wing camber shape for any flight condition. These surfaces featured smooth, flexible upper surfaces and fully enclosed lower surfaces, distinguishing them from conventional flaps that have discontinuous surfaces and exposed or semiexposed mechanisms. Camber shape was controlled by either a manual or automatic flight control system. The wing and aircraft were extensively instrumented to evaluate the local flow characteristics and the total aircraft performance. This paper discusses the interrelationships between the wing pressure, buffet, boundary-layer and flight deflection measurement system analyses and describes the flight maneuvers used to obtain the data. The results are for a wing sweep of 26 deg, a Mach number of 0.85, leading and trailing-edge cambers (delta(sub LE/TE)) of 0/2 and 5/10, and angles of attack from 3.0 deg to 14.0 deg. For the well-behaved flow of the delta(sub LE/TE) = 0/2 camber, a typical cruise camber shape, the local and global data are in good agreement with respect to the flow properties of the wing. For the delta(sub LE/TE) = 5/10 camber, a maneuvering camber shape, the local and global data have similar trends and conclusions, but not the clear-cut agreement observed for cruise camber

    Identification of weakly- to strongly-turbulent three-wave processes in a micro-scale system

    We find capillary wave turbulence (WT) to span multiple dynamical regimes and geometries -- from weakly to strongly nonlinear WT (SWT) and from shallow to deep domains -- all within a 40uL volume millifluidic system. This study is made viable with recent advances in ultra-high-speed digital holographic microscopy, providing 10-us time and 10-nm spatial resolutions for images across the entire field of view, and encompassing a complete wave system at speeds sufficient to capture the salient wave phenomena. We provide a set of tractable parameters that identify the four fundamental WT regimes present in this simple system. A proposed nonlinearity measure permits comparative analysis while varying input conditions. This work augments current understanding of WT regimes and behaviors, and directly applies to many fields beyond fluid mechanics. For example, SWT appears upon the fluid interface at powers less than required for atomization, indicating that further study of SWT is needed to properly understand ultrasound-driven fuel spray atomization and drug and agricultural nebulization.Comment: revision: 10 pages, 3 figures, longer format adds theory and supporting citation

    Contribution of maternal effects to dietary selection in Mediterranean fruit flies

    Individual responses to dietary variation represent a fundamental component of fitness, and nutritional adaptation can occur over just a few generations. Maternal effects can show marked proximate responses to nutrition, but whether they contribute to longer term dietary adaptation is unclear. Here, we tested the hypotheses that maternal effects: (i) contribute to dietary adaptation, (ii) diminish when dietary conditions are constant between generations, (iii) are trait-specific and (iv) interact with high- and low-quality food. We used experimental evolution regimes in the medfly (Ceratitis capitata) to test these predictions by subjecting an outbred laboratory-adapted population to replicated experimental evolution on either constant high calorie sugar (‘A’) or low-calorie starch (‘S’) larval diets, with a standard adult diet across both regimes. We measured the contribution of maternal effects by comparing developmental and adult phenotypes of individuals reared on their own diet with those swapped onto the opposite diet for either one or two generations (high and low maternal effect conditions, respectively), both at the start and after 30 generations of selection. Initially, there were strong maternal effects on female body mass and male mating success but not larval survival. Interestingly, the initial maternal effects observed in female body mass and male mating success showed sex-specific interactions when individuals from high calorie regimes were tested on low calorie diets. However, as populations responded to selection, the effects of maternal provisioning on all traits diminished. The results broadly supported the predictions. They show how the contribution of maternal effects to dietary responses evolves in a context-dependent manner, with significant variation across different fitness-related traits. We conclude that maternal effects can evolve during nutritional adaptation and hence may be an important life history trait to measure, rather than to routinely minimize

    Spectroscopy of Seven Cataclysmic Variables with Periods Above Five Hours

    We present spectroscopy of seven cataclysmic variable stars with orbital periods P(orb) greater than 5 hours, all but one of which are known to be dwarf novae. Using radial velocity measurements we improve on previous orbital period determinations, or derive periods for the first time. The stars and their periods are TT Crt, 0.2683522(5) d; EZ Del, 0.2234(5) d; LL Lyr, 0.249069(4) d; UY Pup, 0.479269(7) d; RY Ser, 0.3009(4) d; CH UMa, 0.3431843(6) d; and SDSS J081321+452809, 0.2890(4) d. For each of the systems we detect the spectrum of the secondary star, estimate its spectral type, and derive a distance based on the surface brightness and Roche lobe constraints. In five systems we also measure the radial velocity curve of the secondary star, estimate orbital inclinations, and where possible estimate distances based on the MV(max) vs.P(orb) relation found by Warner. In concordance with previous studies, we find that all the secondary stars have, to varying degrees, cooler spectral types than would be expected if they were on the main sequence at the measured orbital period.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures, accepted for Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacifi

    Leveraging Summary Statistics to Make Inferences about Complex Phenotypes in Large Biobanks

    As genetic sequencing becomes less expensive and data sets linking genetic data and medical records (e.g., Biobanks) become larger and more common, issues of data privacy and computational challenges become more necessary to address in order to realize the benefits of these datasets. One possibility for alleviating these issues is through the use of already-computed summary statistics (e.g., slopes and standard errors from a regression model of a phenotype on a genotype). If groups share summary statistics from their analyses of biobanks, many of the privacy issues and computational challenges concerning the access of these data could be bypassed. In this paper we explore the possibility of using summary statistics from simple linear models of phenotype on genotype in order to make inferences about more complex phenotypes (those that are derived from two or more simple phenotypes). We provide exact formulas for the slope, intercept, and standard error of the slope for linear regressions when combining phenotypes. Derived equations are validated via simulation and tested on a real data set exploring the genetics of fatty acids
