    Electromagnetic contributions to pseudoscalar masses

    We report on the calculation by the MILC Collaboration of the electromagnetic effects on kaon and pion masses. These masses are computed in QCD with dynamical (asqtad staggered) quarks plus quenched photons at three lattice spacings varying from 0.12 to 0.06 fm. The masses are fit to staggered chiral perturbation theory with NLO electromagnetic terms, as well as analytic terms at higher order. We extrapolate the results to physical light-quark masses and to the continuum limit. At the current stage of the analysis, most, but not all, of the systematic errors have been estimated. The main goal is the comparison of kaon electromagnetic splittings to those of the pion, i.e., an evaluation of the corrections to “Dashen’s theorem.” This in turn will allow us to significantly reduce the systematic errors in our determination of m<sub>u</sub>/m<sub>d</sub>

    The Approach to Ergodicity in Monte Carlo Simulations

    The approach to the ergodic limit in Monte Carlo simulations is studied using both analytic and numerical methods. With the help of a stochastic model, a metric is defined that enables the examination of a simulation in both the ergodic and non-ergodic regimes. In the non-ergodic regime, the model implies how the simulation is expected to approach ergodic behavior analytically, and the analytically inferred decay law of the metric allows the monitoring of the onset of ergodic behavior. The metric is related to previously defined measures developed for molecular dynamics simulations, and the metric enables the comparison of the relative efficiencies of different Monte Carlo schemes. Applications to Lennard-Jones 13-particle clusters are shown to match the model for Metropolis, J-walking and parallel tempering based approaches. The relative efficiencies of these three Monte Carlo approaches are compared, and the decay law is shown to be useful in determining needed high temperature parameters in parallel tempering and J-walking studies of atomic clusters.Comment: 17 Pages, 7 Figure

    Structure, mass and stability of galactic disks

    In this review I concentrate on three areas related to structure of disks in spiral galaxies. First I will review the work on structure, kinematics and dynamics of stellar disks. Next I will review the progress in the area of flaring of HI layers. These subjects are relevant for the presence of dark matter and lead to the conclusion that disk are in general not `maximal', have lower M/L ratios than previously suspected and are locally stable w.r.t. Toomre's Q criterion for local stability.     Common decisions made and actions taken during small-animal consultations at eight first-opinion practices in the United Kingdom

    In order for veterinary surgeons to undertake an evidence-based approach to making decisions about theirpatients, it is important that new evidence is generated to support the clinical decision-making process.Many of the decisions are likely to be around the actions taken to treat or manage health problemsdiscussed during the consultation, and little is currently known about the factors which affect the typeof action taken. The aim of this study was to determine the decisions made and actions taken for healthproblems discussed during first-opinion small-animal consultations, as well as identifying factors whichmay affect the decision-making process.Data were gathered during direct observation of small-animal consultations conducted by 62 veterinarysurgeons in eight first-opinion practices in the United Kingdom. For each patient presented, data weregathered on all health problems discussed during the consultation. The decision made (whether an actionwas taken or not) and the action taken where applicable (e.g. therapeutic treatment with antibiotics) wasalso recorded. A three-level multivariable logistic-regression model was developed, with problem (Level1) nested within patient (Level 2) nested within consulting veterinary surgeon (Level 3), and a binaryoutcome variable of action versus no action.At least one action was taken for 69% (n = 2203/3192) of all problems discussed. Therapeutic treatmentwas the most common action taken (n = 1286/3192 problems; 40.3%), followed by management advice(n = 1040/3192; 32.6%) and diagnostic work-up (n = 323/3192; 10.1%). The most common therapeutictreatment was antibiotics (n = 386/1286; 30%), while the most common management advice given wasdietary advice (n = 509/1040; 48.9%). The three explanatory variables remaining in the final model werewhether the problem was a presenting or non-presenting problem, the type of diagnosis made, andthe body system affected. Explanatory variables which did not remain in the final model were patientsignalment, problem history, consultation type, clinical examination type, and who raised the problem(veterinary surgeon or owner).For over two-thirds of problems discussed, an action was taken which suggests these problems maybe seen as important by the veterinary surgeon and/or pet owner. No action was taken for almost a thirdof cases which could represent ‘watchful waiting’, which has been highlighted as important in humanhealthcare. Future research should focus on the common actions taken, further exploring the complexdecision-making process, and examining the effect of the decisions made on long-term patient outcomes

    Schrödinger operators with δ and δ′-potentials supported on hypersurfaces

    Self-adjoint Schrödinger operators with δ and δ′-potentials supported on a smooth compact hypersurface are defined explicitly via boundary conditions. The spectral properties of these operators are investigated, regularity results on the functions in their domains are obtained, and analogues of the Birman–Schwinger principle and a variant of Krein’s formula are shown. Furthermore, Schatten–von Neumann type estimates for the differences of the powers of the resolvents of the Schrödinger operators with δ and δ′-potentials, and the Schrödinger operator without a singular interaction are proved. An immediate consequence of these estimates is the existence and completeness of the wave operators of the corresponding scattering systems, as well as the unitary equivalence of the absolutely continuous parts of the singularly perturbed and unperturbed Schrödinger operators. In the proofs of our main theorems we make use of abstract methods from extension theory of symmetric operators, some algebraic considerations and results on elliptic regularity

    Vibrational and rotational sequences in 101 Mo and 103,4 Ru studied via multinucleon transfer reactions

    The near yrast states of 101 Mo and 103,104 Ru have been studied following their population via heavy ion multinucleon transfer reactions between a 136 Xe beam and a thin, self supporting 100 Mo target. The ground state sequence in 104 Ru can be understood as demonstrating a simple evolution from a quasi vibrational structure at lower spins to statically deformed, quasi rotational excitation involving the population of a pair of low Omega h11 2 neutron orbitals. The effect of the decoupled h11 2 orbital on this vibration to rotational evolution is demonstrated by an extension of the E GOS prescription to include odd A nuclei. The experimental results are also compared with self consistent Total Routhian Surface calculations which also highlight the polarising role of the highly aligned neutron h11 2 orbital in these nucle

    Therapeutic jurisprudence and procedural justice in Scottish drug courts

    Scotland, like other Western jurisdictions, has recently witnessed the development of problem-solving courts aimed at responding more effectively to issues that underlie certain types of offending behaviour. The first to be established were two pilot Drug Courts which drew upon experience of Scottish Drug Treatment and Testing Orders. In common with Drug Courts elsewhere, the Scottish pilots combined treatment, drug testing, supervision and judicial oversight. This article focuses upon the role of judicial involvement in the ongoing review of Drug Court participants’ progress, drawing upon court observation and interviews with offenders and Drug Court professionals. Drug Court dialogues were typically encouraging on the part of sheriffs, aimed at recognising and reinforcing the progress made by participants and motivating then to maintain and build upon their achievements to date, while participants were generally responsive to the positive feedback they received from the sheriffs as their orders progressed. Interactions within the Scottish Drug Courts reflect key features of procedural justice (Tyler, 1990), including ethicality, efforts to be fair and representation. By contributing to enhanced perceptions of procedural justice, Drug Court dialogues may, it is argued, increase the perceived legitimacy of the court and by so doing encourage increased compliance with treatment and desistance from crime
