Does wage rank affect employees' well-being?
How do workers make wage comparisons? Both an experimental study and an analysis of 16,000 British employees are reported. Satisfaction and well-being levels are shown to depend on more than simple relative pay. They depend upon the ordinal rank of an individual's wage within a comparison group. “Rank” itself thus seems to matter to human beings. Moreover, consistent with psychological theory, quits in a workplace are correlated with pay distribution skewness

Proteomic investigations of adult polyglucosan body disease: insights into the pathobiology of a neurodegenerative disorder
Inadequate glycogen branching enzyme 1 (GBE1) activity results in different forms of glycogen storage disease type IV, including adult polyglucosan body disorder (APBD). APBD is clinically characterized by adult-onset development of progressive spasticity, neuropathy, and neurogenic bladder and is histologically characterized by the accumulation of structurally abnormal glycogen (polyglucosan bodies) in multiple cell types. How insufficient GBE1 activity causes the disease phenotype of APBD is poorly understood. We hypothesized that proteomic analysis of tissue from GBE1-deficient individuals would provide insights into GBE1-mediated pathobiology. In this discovery study, we utilized label-free LC–MS/MS to quantify the proteomes of lymphoblasts from 3 persons with APBD and 15 age- and gender-matched controls, with validation of the findings by targeted MS. There were 531 differentially expressed proteins out of 3,427 detected between APBD subjects vs. controls, including pronounced deficiency of GBE1. Bioinformatic analyses indicated multiple canonical pathways and protein–protein interaction networks to be statistically markedly enriched in APBD subjects, including: RNA processing/transport/translation, cell cycle control/replication, mTOR signaling, protein ubiquitination, unfolded protein and endoplasmic reticulum stress responses, glycolysis and cell death/apoptosis. Dysregulation of these processes, therefore, are primary or secondary factors in APBD pathobiology in this model system. Our findings further suggest that proteomic analysis of GBE1 mutant lymphoblasts can be leveraged as part of the screening for pharmaceutical agents for the treatment of APBD
The Brown Dwarf Kinematics Project (BDKP) I. Proper Motions and Tangential Velocities for a Large Sample of Late-type M, L and T Dwarfs
We report proper motion measurements for 427 late-type M, L and T dwarfs, 332
of which have been measured for the first time. Combining these new proper
motions with previously published measurements yields a sample of 841 M7-T8
dwarfs. We combined parallax measurements or calculated spectrophotometric
distances and computed tangential velocities for the entire sample. We find
that kinematics for the full and volume-limited 20 pc samples are consistent
with those expected for the Galactic thin disk, with no significant differences
between late-type M, L, and T dwarfs. Applying an age-velocity relation we
conclude that the average kinematic age of the 20 pc sample of ultracool dwarfs
is older than recent kinematic estimates and more consistent with age results
calculated with population synthesis models. There is a statistically distinct
population of high tangential velocity sources whose kinematics suggest an even
older population of ultracool dwarfs belonging to either the Galactic thick
disk or halo. We isolate subsets of the entire sample, including low
surface-gravity dwarfs, unusually blue L dwarfs, and photometric outliers in
J-Ks color and investigate their kinematics. We find that the spectroscopically
distinct class of unusually blue L dwarfs has kinematics clearly consistent
with old age, implying that high surface-gravity and/or low metallicity may be
relevant to their spectral properties. The low surface-gravity dwarfs are
kinematically younger than the overall population, and the kinematics of the
red and blue ultracool dwarfs suggest ages that are younger and older than the
full sample, respectively. We also present a reduced proper motion diagram at
2MASS Ks for the entire population and find that a limit of H_Ks > 18 excludes
M dwarfs from the L and T dwarf population regardless of near-infrared color.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal, 21 pages text,

The U.S. Inland Creel and Angler Survey Catalog (CreelCat): Development, Applications, and Opportunities
Inland recreational fishing, defined as primarily leisure-driven fishing in freshwaters, is a popular pastime in the USA. State natural resource agencies endeavor to provide high-quality and sustainable fishing opportunities for anglers. Managers often use creel and other angler survey data to inform state- and waterbody-level management efforts. Despite the broad implementation of angler surveys and their importance to fisheries management at state scales, regional and national coordination among these activities is minimal, limiting data applicability for larger-scale management practices and research. Here, we introduce the U.S. Inland Creel and Angler Survey Catalog (CreelCat), a first-of-its-kind, publicly available national database of angler survey data that establishes a baseline of national inland recreational fishing metrics. We highlight research and management applications to help support sustainable inland recreational fishing practices, consider cautions, and make recommendations for implementation
