Collisions of small ice particles under microgravity conditions (II): Does the chemical composition of the ice change the collisional properties?
Context: Understanding the collisional properties of ice is important for
understanding both the early stages of planet formation and the evolution of
planetary ring systems. Simple chemicals such as methanol and formic acid are
known to be present in cold protostellar regions alongside the dominant water
ice; they are also likely to be incorporated into planets which form in
protoplanetary disks, and planetary ring systems. However, the effect of the
chemical composition of the ice on its collisional properties has not yet been
studied. Aims: Collisions of 1.5 cm ice spheres composed of pure crystalline
water ice, water with 5% methanol, and water with 5% formic acid were
investigated to determine the effect of the ice composition on the collisional
outcomes. Methods: The collisions were conducted in a dedicated experimental
instrument, operated under microgravity conditions, at relative particle impact
velocities between 0.01 and 0.19 m s^-1, temperatures between 131 and 160 K and
a pressure of around 10^-5 mbar. Results: A range of coefficients of
restitution were found, with no correlation between this and the chemical
composition, relative impact velocity, or temperature. Conclusions: We conclude
that the chemical composition of the ice (at the level of 95% water ice and 5%
methanol or formic acid) does not affect the collisional properties at these
temperatures and pressures due to the inability of surface wetting to take
place. At a level of 5% methanol or formic acid, the structure is likely to be
dominated by crystalline water ice, leading to no change in collisional
properties. The surface roughness of the particles is the dominant factor in
explaining the range of coefficients of restitution
Soft-tissue specimens from pre-European extinct birds of New Zealand
We provide the first complete review of soft tissue remains from New Zealand birds that became extinct prior to European settlement (c. AD 1800). These rare specimens allow insights into the anatomy and appearance of the birds that are not attainable from bones. Our review includes previously unpublished records of ‘lost’ specimens, and descriptions of recently discovered specimens such as the first evidence of soft tissues from the South Island goose (Cnemiornis calcitrans). Overall, the soft tissue remains are dominated by moa (with specimens from each of the six genera), but also include specimens from Finsch's duck (Chenonetta finschi) and the New Zealand owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles novaezealandiae). All desiccated soft tissue specimens that have radiocarbon or stratigraphic dates are late Holocene in age, and most have been found in the semi-arid region of Central Otago
Southern hemispheric halon trends and global halon emissions, 1978–2011
The atmospheric records of four halons, H-1211 (CBrClF2), H-1301 (CBrF3), H-2402 (CBrF2CBrF2) and H-1202 (CBr2F2), measured from air collected at Cape Grim, Tasmania, between 1978 and 2011, are reported. Mixing ratios of H-1211, H-2402 and H-1202 began to decline in the early to mid-2000s, but those of H-1301 continue to increase up to mid-2011. These trends are compared to those reported by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and AGAGE (Advanced Global Atmospheric Experiment). The observations suggest that the contribution of the halons to total tropospheric bromine at Cape Grim has begun to decline from a peak in 2008 of about 8.1 ppt. An extrapolation of halon mixing ratios to 2060, based on reported banks and predicted release factors, shows this decline becoming more rapid in the coming decades, with a contribution to total tropospheric bromine of about 3 ppt in 2060. Top-down global annual emissions of the halons were derived using a two-dimensional atmospheric model. The emissions of all four have decreased since peaking in the late 1980s–mid-1990s, but this decline has slowed recently, particularly for H-1301 and H-2402 which have shown no decrease in emissions over the past five years. The UEA (University of East Anglia) top-down model-derived emissions are compared to those reported using a top-down approach by NOAA and AGAGE and the bottom-up estimates of HTOC (Halons Technical Options Committee). The implications of an alternative set of steady-state atmospheric lifetimes are discussed. Using a lifetime of 14 yr or less for H-1211 to calculate top-down emissions estimates would lead to small, or even negative, estimated banks given reported production data. Finally emissions of H-1202, a product of over-bromination during the production process of H-1211, have continued despite reported production of H-1211 ceasing in 2010. This raises questions as to the source of these H-1202 emissions
Carrier dynamics in ion-implanted GaAs studied by simulation and observation of terahertz emission
We have studied terahertz (THz) emission from arsenic-ion implanted GaAs both
experimentally and using a three-dimensional carrier dynamics simulation. A
uniform density of vacancies was formed over the optical absorption depth of
bulk GaAs samples by performing multi-energy implantations of arsenic ions (1
and 2.4MeV) and subsequent thermal annealing. In a series of THz emission
experiments the frequency of peak THz power was found to increase significantly
from 1.4 to 2.2THz when the ion implantation dose was increased from 10^13 to
10^16 cm-3. We used a semi-classical Monte-Carlo simulation of ultra-fast
carrier dynamics to reproduce and explain these results. The effect of the
ion-induced damage was included in the simulation by considering carrier
scattering at neutral and charged impurities, as well as carrier trapping at
defect sites. Higher vacancy concentrations and shorter carrier trapping times
both contributed to shorter simulated THz pulses, the latter being more
important over experimentally realistic parameter ranges.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
The size, density, and formation of the Orcus-Vanth system in the Kuiper belt
The Kuiper belt object Orcus and its satellite Vanth form an unusual system
in the Kuiper belt. Orcus is amongst the largest objects known in the Kuiper
belt, but the relative size of Vanth is much larger than that of the tiny
satellites of the other large objects. From Hubble Space Telescope observations
we find that Orcus and Vanth have different visible colors and that Vanth does
not share the water ice absorption feature seen in the infrared spectrum of
Orcus. We also find that Vanth has a nearly face-on circular orbit with a
period of 9.5393 +-0.0001 days and semimajor axis of 8980+-20 km, implying a
system mass of 6.32+- 0.01 X 10^20 kg or 3.8% the mass of dwarf planet Eris.
From Spitzer Space Telescope observations we find that the thermal emission
is consistent with a single body with diameter 940+-70 km and a geometric
albedo of 0.28+-0.04. Assuming equal densities and albedos, this measurements
implies sizes of Orcus and Vanth of 900 and 280 km, respectively, and a mass
ratio of 33. Assuming a factor of 2 lower albedo for the non-icy Vanth,
however, implies sizes of 820 and 640 km and a mass ratio of 2. The measured
density depends on the assumed albedo ratio of the two objects but is
approximately 1.5+-0.3 g cm^-3$, midway between typical densities measured for
larger and for smaller objects. The orbit and mass ratio is consistent with
formation from a giant impact and subsequent outward tidal evolution and even
consistent with the system having now achieved a double synchronous state. The
system can equally well be explained, however, by initial eccentric capture,
Kozai cycling which increases the eccentricity and decreases the pericenter of
the orbit of Vanth, and subsequent tidal evolution inward.Comment: Submitted to A
Enabling Future Sustainability Transitions: An Urban Metabolism Approach to Los Angeles Pincetl et al. Enabling Future Sustainability Transitions
Summary: This synthesis article presents an overview of an urban metabolism (UM) approach using mixed methods and multiple sources of data for Los Angeles, California. We examine electric energy use in buildings and greenhouse gas emissions from electricity, and calculate embedded infrastructure life cycle effects, water use and solid waste streams in an attempt to better understand the urban flows and sinks in the Los Angeles region (city and county). This quantification is being conducted to help policy-makers better target energy conservation and efficiency programs, pinpoint best locations for distributed solar generation, and support the development of policies for greater environmental sustainability. It provides a framework to which many more UM flows can be added to create greater understanding of the study area's resource dependencies. Going forward, together with policy analysis, UM can help untangle the complex intertwined resource dependencies that cities must address as they attempt to increase their environmental sustainability
Attitudes of Canadian Beef Producers Toward Animal Welfare
Commercial beef production in western Canada involves raising cows and calves on large tracts of grassland, plus grain-based ‘finishing’ of animals in outdoor feedlots. This study used open-ended, semi-structured interviews to explore views on animal welfare of 23 commercial beef producers in this system. Although wary of the term ‘animal welfare’, participants understood the concept to encompass three well-known elements: (i) basic animal health and body condition; (ii) affective states (comfort, contentment, freedom from hunger or thirst); and (iii) the ability to live a ‘natural’ life. Participants attached importance to protecting animals from natural hardships (extreme weather, predators), yet many regarded some degree of natural challenge as acceptable or even positive. Quiet rumination was uniformly regarded as indicating contentment. Avoiding ‘stress’ was seen as a central goal, to be achieved especially by skilful handling and good facilities. Invasive procedures (branding, castration, de-horning) were recognised as painful but were accepted because they were seen as: (i) necessary for regulatory or management reasons; (ii) satisfactory trade-offs to prevent worse welfare problems such as aggression; or (iii) sufficiently short-term to be relatively unimportant. Other issues — including poor facilities, rough or excessive handling, poor nutrition, and failure to protect health — were regarded as more serious welfare concerns. While feeling constrained by low profits, participants saw good welfare as crucial to profitability. Participants uniformly expressed an ethic of care, enjoyment of working with animals, and varying degrees of willingness to sacrifice personal comfort for animal well-being. We argue that animal welfare policy and advocacy are likely to be more successful in engaging producers if they acknowledge and address producers’ views on animal welfare
