Spectroscopic and Kinetic Studies of Bismuth Dimers
The spectroscopy of high rotational levels (J ≤ 211) in Bi2 X(Og+) and A(Ou+) was investigated for 2≤v ≤5 and 0≤v\u27≤4 by observing total fluorescence from laser excitation. Dunham coefficients were derived that fit all observed rotational lines to within 0.01 cm-1. Franck-Condon factors were calculated and experimentally verified for transitions originating from the initially populated levels 0≤v\u27≤5. Vibrational energy transfer upon collision with rare gas collision partners was investigated for the low-lying vibrational levels of the A-state using spectrally resolved, continuous wave laser induced fluorescence. Vibrational transfer was adequately modeled by Landau-Teller scaling of the Δv=-1 vibrational transfer rates with fundamental rate coefficients ranging from kv=5.29x10-12 cm3/molec-sec for collisions with helium to 2.38x10-12 cm3/molec-sec for krypton. Electronic quenching and multi-quantum transfer rates were approximately an order of magnitude slower than single quantum transfer rates
The effect of sewage effluents and their constituents upon the vegetative growth of Ulva lactuca Linnaeus 1753 (Sea-lettuce) : progress report
Ulva lactuca Linnaeus 1753, referred to in the vernacular as Sea Lettuce is a green, marlne alga often forming large, distromatic blades of considerable size. It usually begins its existence from a single celled, germinating zygote or germinating zoospore. During its early stages it is almost always attached to some object. As it increases in size, it may become detached either by its sheer bulk, or by the action of rough waters . Once it is detached, however, it can continue its growth, often at a very rapid rate, if the environmental conditions are satisfactory. Large pieces may become fragmented through wave and beach interactions and by foraging and grazing animals. These fragments may also continue to grow as long as the conditions for such vegetative growth approach optimal

Pharmacy Interweaving Safety Within Hospital Health Information Technology
Research on the impact of hospital technology on medication safety usually focuses on prescribing and administration. Less is known about the pharmacy-related processes of reviewing, ordering and dispensing medications and how technology supports this work. We carried out a qualitative exploratory study of a hospital in England (UK) with the aim of gaining insight into processes of digitalisation. We found that hospital pharmacy staff perform safety work with technology aiming to prevent harm, such as ‘scaffolding’ people's thinking processes, or linking-up unintegrated systems. Their work seems to ‘interweave’ safety in between others' medication activities, but they do so sometimes struggling with technological deficiencies

Vocal and Vehement: Understanding Parents’ Aversion to Standards-Based Grading
The implementation of a standards based grading (SBG) system has proven to be difficult even in school districts that tend to be progressive in their educational approaches. Parents are often resistant to the change in grading systems and seem to be a significant barrier to a school’s move to SBG. Researchers in this qualitative study went directly to the parents who most vocally and vehemently opposed the new assessment system and sought to understand their perceptions. Data from these interviews produced five themes: Confidence in the known, dislike for the unknown; poor communication leading to disappointment; confusion from lack of clarity; and frustration due to perceived outcomes. Data from this study indicate that school leaders ought to consider reframing grading reform and better align it with Dweck’s growth-mindset model and create a process that is less about enticing students with the currency of grades and more about helping students’ learning dispositions that would enable success in college and career. Further, in addition to vigilant communication, school leaders need to plan high quality professional development to clarify and refine the purpose of grading and align practices with that purpose

Development of image analysis techniques as a tool to detect and quantify morphological changes in anaerobic sludge : I. application to a granulation process
Image analysis techniques were developed and
applied to quantify the process of anaerobic granulation in an expanded granular sludge blanket reactor (EGSB) fed with a synthetic substrate based on glucose [60-30% COD chemical oxygen demand)] and volatile fatty acids
(40-70% COD) over 376 days. In a first operation period that lasted 177 days, the aggregation of dispersed sludge was quantitatively monitored through the recognition and quantification of aggregates and filaments. A parameter
defined as the ratio between the filaments' length and the aggregates projected area (LfA) has proven to be sensitive to detect changes in the aggregation status of the anaerobic
sludge. The aggregation time-defined as the moment when a balance between filaments' length and aggregates' size was establishe-was recognized through the LfA.
The percentage of projected area of aggregates within three size ranges (0.01 -0.1 mm, 0.1 - 1 mm, and >1 mm, equivalent diameter) reflected the granular size spectrum during the aggregation process. When sudden increases on the upflow velocity and on the organic loading rate
were applied to the previously formed granules, the developed image analysis techniques revealed to be good indicators of granular sludge stability, since they were sensitive to detected filaments release, fragmentation, and erosion that usually leads to washout. The specific methanogenic
activities in the presence of acetate, propionate,
butyrate, and H2/CO2 increased along the operation, particularly relevant was the sudden increase in the specific hydrogenophilic activity, immediately after the moment recognized
as aggregation time.Instituto Cooperação Científica e Tecnológica Internacional (ICCTI), Ambassade de France in Portugal - Project 203 B4.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - SFRH/BD/3187/2000, PRAXIS XXI/BD/20325/99, POCTI/1999/CTA736524
