Identifying the seeds of heterotic pools for Southern and Eastern Africa from global elite spring wheat germplasm
Hybrid breeding can increase the competitiveness of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in Sub-Saharan Africa by fostering more public-private partnerships and promoting investment by the private sector. The benefit of hybrid wheat cultivars in South Africa has previously been demonstrated but due to the high cost of hybrid seed production, hybrid breeding has not received significant attention in the past decade. Considering the renewed commitment of the private sector to establish wheat as a hybrid crop globally, coupled with significant research investment into enhancement of outcrossing of wheat, hybrid wheat breeding in Southern and Eastern Africa should be revisited. Our study aimed to identify genetically distinct germplasm groups in spring wheat that would be useful in the establishment of heterotic pools targeting this region. Multi-environment yield testing of a large panel of F1 test hybrids, generated using global elite germplasm, was carried out between 2019 and 2020 in Argentina, Africa, Europe, and Australia. We observed significant genotype by environment interactions within our testing network, confirming the distinctiveness of African trial sites. Relatively high additive genetic variance was observed highlighting the contribution of parental genotypes to the grain yield of test hybrids. We explored the genetic architecture of these parents and the genetic factors underlying the value of parents appear to be associated with their genetic subgroup, with positive marker effects distributed throughout the genome. In testcrosses, elite germplasm from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) appear to be complementary to the genetically distinct germplasm bred in South Africa. The feasibility of achieving genetic gain via heterotic pool establishment and divergence, and by extension the viability of hybrid cultivars in Sub-Saharan Africa, is supported by the results of our study
Metabolomics of urinary organic acids in respiratory chain deficiencies in children
Metabolomic analysis of the urinary organic acids from 39 selected children with defined respiratory chain
deficiencies (RCDs) was performed using untargeted gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, revealing the
presence of 255 endogenous and 46 exogenous substances. Variable reduction identified 92 variables from the
endogenous substances, which could be analysed by univariate and multivariate statistical methods. Using
these methods, no characteristic organic acid biomarker profile could be defined of practical value for diagnostic
purposes for complex I (CI), complex III (CIII) and multiple complex (CM) deficiencies. The statistical procedures
used did, however, disclose 24 metabolites that were practical highly (d > 0.75) and statistically (p < 0.05)
significant for the combined and clinically closely related group of RCDs. Several of these metabolites occur in
single enzyme inherited metabolic diseases, but most were not previously reported to be linked to the metabolic
perturbations that are due to RCDs. Ultimately, we constructed a global metabolic profile of carbohydrate, amino
acid and fatty acid catabolism, illuminating the diverse and complex biochemical consequences of these
disorders. This metabolomics investigation disclosed a metabolite profile that has the potential to define an extended and characteristic biosignature for RCDs and the development of a non-invasive screening procedure

Early flowering as a drought escape mechanism in plants: how can it aid wheat production?
Drought escape (DE) is a classical adaptive mechanism which involves rapid plant development to enable the completion of the full life-cycle prior to a coming drought event. This strategy is widely used in populations of native plants, and is also applicable to cereal crops such as wheat. Early flowering time and a shorter vegetative phase can be very important for wheat production in conditions of terminal drought since this can minimize exposure to dehydration during the sensitive flowering and post-anthesis grain filling periods. A gradual shift toward early flowering has been observed over the last century of wheat breeding in countries with a Mediterranean-type climate and frequent terminal drought. This trend is predicted to continue for wheat production in the coming years in response to global climate warming. The advantage of early flowering wheat is apparent under conditions of impending terminal drought, and modern varieties are significantly more productive due to minimization of the risk associated with drought stress. Under favorable conditions, a short vegetative phase can result in reduced plant biomass due to the reduction in time available for photosynthetic production and seed nutrient accumulation. However, high yield potential has been reported for the development of both shallow and deep roots, representing plasticity in response to drought in combination with the early flowering trait. Wheat productivity can be high both in well-watered and drought-affected field trials, where an efficient strategy of DE was associated with quick growth, yield potential and water use efficiency. The zCOSMOS 10k-Bright Spectroscopic Sample
We present spectroscopic redshifts of a large sample of galaxies with I_(AB) < 22.5 in the COSMOS field, measured from spectra of 10,644 objects that have been obtained in the first two years of observations in the zCOSMOS-bright redshift survey. These include a statistically complete subset of 10,109 objects. The average accuracy of individual redshifts is 110 km s^(–1), independent of redshift. The reliability of individual redshifts is described by a Confidence Class that has been empirically calibrated through repeat spectroscopic observations of over 600 galaxies. There is very good agreement between spectroscopic and photometric redshifts for the most secure Confidence Classes. For the less secure Confidence Classes, there is a good correspondence between the fraction of objects with a consistent photometric redshift and the spectroscopic repeatability, suggesting that the photometric redshifts can be used to indicate which of the less secure spectroscopic redshifts are likely right and which are probably wrong, and to give an indication of the nature of objects for which we failed to determine a redshift. Using this approach, we can construct a spectroscopic sample that is 99% reliable and which is 88% complete in the sample as a whole, and 95% complete in the redshift range 0.5 < z < 0.8. Mass and environment as drivers of galaxy evolution in SDSS and zCOSMOS and the origin of the Schechter function
We explore the inter-relationships between mass, star-formation rate and
environment in the SDSS, zCOSMOS and other surveys. The differential effects of
mass and environment are completely separable to z ~ 1, indicating that two
distinct processes are operating, "mass-quenching" and "environment-quenching".
Environment-quenching, at fixed over-density, evidently does not change with
epoch to z ~ 1, suggesting that it occurs as large-scale structure develops in
the Universe. The observed constancy of the mass-function shape for
star-forming galaxies, demands that the mass-quenching of galaxies around and
above M*, must be proportional to their star-formation rates at all z < 2. We
postulate that this simple mass-quenching law also holds over a much broader
range of stellar mass and epoch. These two simple quenching processes, plus
some additional quenching due to merging, then naturally produce (a) a
quasi-static Schechter mass function for star-forming galaxies with a value of
M* that is set by the proportionality between the star-formation and
mass-quenching rates, (b) a double Schechter function for passive galaxies with
two components: the dominant one is produced by mass-quenching and has exactly
the same M* as the star-forming galaxies but an alpha shallower by +1, while
the other is produced by environment effects and has the same M* and alpha as
the star-forming galaxies, and is larger in high density environments.
Subsequent merging of quenched galaxies modifies these predictions somewhat in
the denser environments, slightly increasing M* and making alpha more negative.
All of these detailed quantitative relationships between the Schechter
parameters are indeed seen in the SDSS, lending strong support to our simple
empirically-based model. The model naturally produces for passive galaxies the
"anti-hierarchical" run of mean ages and alpha-element abundances with mass.Comment: 66 pages, 19 figures, 1 movie, accepted for publication in ApJ. The
