    Retail Concentration and Shopping Center Rents - A Comparison of Two Cities

    This study aims primarily at testing whether, and to what extent, retail concentration within regional and super-regional shopping centers affects rent levels as well as the differential impact it may exert for various goods categories and sub-categories and in different urban contexts. In this paper, 1,499 leases distributed among eleven regional and super-regional shopping centers in Montreal and Quebec City, Canada, and negotiated over the 2000-2003 period are being considered. Unit base rents (base rent per sq. ft.) are regressed on a series of descriptors that include percentage rent rate, retail unit size (GLA), lease duration, shopping center age as well as 31 retail categories while the Herfindahl index is used as a measure of intra-category retail concentration. Findings suggest that while, overall, intra-category retail concentration affects base rent negatively, the magnitude and, eventually, direction of the impact varies depending on the nature of the activity and the market dynamics that prevail for the category considered.

    Two-dimensional flows of foam: drag exerted on circular obstacles and dissipation

    A Stokes experiment for foams is proposed. It consists in a two-dimensional flow of a foam, confined between a water subphase and a top plate, around a fixed circular obstacle. We present systematic measurements of the drag exerted by the flowing foam on the obstacle, \emph{versus} various separately controlled parameters: flow rate, bubble volume, solution viscosity, obstacle size and boundary conditions. We separate the drag into two contributions, an elastic one (yield drag) at vanishing flow rate, and a fluid one (viscous coefficient) increasing with flow rate. We quantify the influence of each control parameter on the drag. The results exhibit in particular a power-law dependence of the drag as a function of the solution viscosity and the flow rate with two different exponents. Moreover, we show that the drag decreases with bubble size, increases with obstacle size, and that the effect of boundary conditions is small. Measurements of the streamwise pressure gradient, associated to the dissipation along the flow of foam, are also presented: they show no dependence on the presence of an obstacle, and pressure gradient depends on flow rate, bubble volume and solution viscosity with three independent power laws.Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, proceeding of Eufoam 2004 conferenc

    Solid-phase microextraction/gas chromatography–mass spectrometry method optimization for characterization of surface adsorption forces of nanoparticles

    A complete characterization of the different physical chemical properties of nanoparticles (NPs) is necessary for the evaluation of their impact on health and environment. Among these properties, the surface characterization of the nanomaterial is the least developed and in many cases limited to the measurement of surface composition and Zeta potential. The biological surface adsorption index approach (BSAI) for characterization of surface adsorption properties of nanoparticles (NPs) has been recently introduced [1,2]. BSAI approach offers in principle the possibility to characterize the different interaction forces exerted between a nanomaterial surface and an organic –and by extension biological- entity. The present work develops further the BSAI approach of and optimizes a solid-phase microextraction – gas chromatography mass spectrometry (SPME/GC-MS) method, which is applied to measure the adsorption properties of different nanomaterials taking into account their specific surface area. This approach gives thus a better defined quantification of the adsorption properties on NPs. To optimize the SPME/GC-MS method, we investigated the various aspects of the process including: kinetics of adsorption of probe compounds on SPME fiber, kinetic of adsorption of probe compounds on NPs surface, and optimization of NPs concentration. The optimized conditions were then tested on 33 probe compounds and on Au NPs (15 nm) and SiO2 NPs (50 nm). The results demonstrated that this detailed optimization of the SPME/GC-MS method under various conditions is a critical factor and pre-requisite to the application of BSAI approach as a tool to characterize surface adsorption properties of NPs and therefore to any further conclusions on their potential impact on health.JRC.I.4-Nanobioscience

    Purpose: We investigated the cross-sectional associations between macular pigment optical density (MPOD), plasma lutein (L), and zeaxanthin (Z) concentrations and cognitive function in 184 older adults of the 3-City-Bordeaux cohort. Methods: MPOD was measured using the two-wavelength autofluorescence method with a modified scanning laser ophthalmoscope. Plasma L and Z (L+Z) concentrations were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography and were considered either crude or expressed as a ratio of the concentration of plasma lipids (total cholesterol [TC] + triglycerides [TG]). Cognitive performances were assessed using the following four separate neuropsychological tests: the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Isaacs Set Test (IST), the Benton Visual Retention Test (BVRT), and the sum of the three free recalls of the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT). These test results were summarized by a composite global cognitive z-score. Results: Higher MPOD at 0.5 degrees was significantly associated with a higher composite z-score (beta = 0.15, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.04-0.26), higher BVRT (beta = 0.39, 95%CI 0.08-0.70), and higher IST (beta = 1.16, 95%CI 0.11-2.22) performances. Higher plasma L+Z concentrations were significantly associated with higher IST scores (beta = 0.97, 95%CI 0.01-1.94). Furthermore, a higher L+Z/TC+TG ratio was associated with a higher composite z-score (beta = 0.12, 95%CI 0.01-0.23), along with higher IST (beta = 1.02, 95%CI 0.002-2.04) and FCSRT (beta = 1.55, 95%CI 0.41-2.69) performances. Conclusions: This analysis suggested that both higher MPOD and L+Z concentrations were significantly associated with higher cognitive performances. However, MPOD measurements have the advantage of being a fast and representative measure of long-term carotenoid intake

    Strigolactone biosynthesis and signaling in plant development.

    Strigolactones (SLs), first identified for their role in parasitic and symbiotic interactions in the rhizosphere, constitute the most recently discovered group of plant hormones. They are best known for their role in shoot branching but, more recently, roles for SLs in other aspects of plant development have emerged. In the last five years, insights into the SL biosynthetic pathway have also been revealed and several key components of the SL signaling pathway have been identified. Here, and in the accompanying poster, we summarize our current understanding of the SL pathway and discuss how this pathway regulates plant development

    Comprehensive analysis of the renal transcriptional response to acute uranyl nitrate exposure

    BACKGROUND: Chemical and radiological toxicities related to uranium acute exposure have been widely studied in nuclear fuel workers and military personnel. It is well known that uranyl nitrate induces acute renal failure (ARF). However, the mechanisms of this metal-induced injury are not well defined at the molecular level. RESULTS: Renal function and histology were assessed in mice receiving uranyl nitrate (UN(+)) and controls (UN(-)). To identify the genomic response to uranium exposure, serial analysis gene expression (SAGE) of the kidney was performed in both groups. Over 43,000 mRNA SAGE tags were sequenced. A selection of the differentially expressed transcripts was confirmed by real-time quantitative PCR and Western blotting. UN(+) animals developed renal failure and displayed the characteristic histological lesions of UN nephropathy. Of the >14,500 unique tags identified in both libraries, 224 had a modified expression level; they are known to participate in inflammation, ion transport, signal transduction, oxidative stress, apoptosis, metabolism, and catabolism. Several genes that were identified had not previously been evaluated within the context of toxic ARF such as translationally controlled tumor protein, insulin like growth factor binding protein 7 and ribosomal protein S29, all apoptosis related genes. CONCLUSION: We report a comprehensive description of the UN induced modifications in gene expression levels, including the identification of genes previously unrelated to ARF. The study of these genes and the metabolisms they control should improve our understanding of toxic ARF and enlighten on the molecular targets for potential therapeutic interventions

    Galaxy formation and evolution since z=1

    Determination of the star formation rate can be done using mid-IR photometry or Balmer line luminosity after a proper correction for extinction effects. Both methods show convergent results while those based on UV or on [OII]3727 luminosities underestimate the SFR by factors ranging from 5 to 40 for starbursts and for luminous IR galaxies, respectively. Most of the evolution of the cosmic star formation density is related to the evolution of luminous compact galaxies and to luminous IR galaxies. Because they were metal deficient and were forming stars at very high rates (40 to 100 solar mass per year), it is probable that these (massive) galaxies were actively forming the bulk of their stellar/metal content at z < 1.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures.     Dynamic scan paths investigations under manual and highly automated driving

    Active visual scanning of the scene is a key task-element in all forms of human locomotion. In the field of driving, steering (lateral control) and speed adjustments (longitudinal control) models are largely based on drivers’ visual inputs. Despite knowledge gained on gaze behaviour behind the wheel, our understanding of the sequential aspects of the gaze strategies that actively sample that input remains restricted. Here, we apply scan path analysis to investigate sequences of visual scanning in manual and highly automated simulated driving. Five stereotypical visual sequences were identified under manual driving: forward polling (i.e. far road explorations), guidance, backwards polling (i.e. near road explorations), scenery and speed monitoring scan paths. Previously undocumented backwards polling scan paths were the most frequent. Under highly automated driving backwards polling scan paths relative frequency decreased, guidance scan paths relative frequency increased, and automation supervision specific scan paths appeared. The results shed new light on the gaze patterns engaged while driving.
