    Impact of SARS-CoV-2 on dentistry: a review of literature.

    OBJECTIVE: SARS-CoV-2 is a new Coronavirus identified as the cause of Corona- virus disease in 2019 (COVID-19). The epidemic spread in China and beyond its borders, involv- ing 114 countries with more than 5 million dead. On March 11, the WHO declared the spread of SARS-CoV-2 to be a pandemic and encouraged nations to adopt harsh restrictive measures. Therefore, patients more and more often turn to dental offices only for emergencies. Healthcare professionals, including dentists, are at high in- fectious risk. In fact, the closeness to the oral cavity and nasopharynx and the use of drills or ultrasonic devices that cause aerosol release, make dental professions at high risk of bacterial and viral infections. The way patients are treat- ed has changed. In fact, it should be mandato- ry to carry out a pre-treatment telephone triage and the use of mouthwashes to reduce bacterial load. In the current pandemic, it is necessary to adopt specific safety protocols that can protect dental operators as well as limit the spread of the virus. The purpose of this review is to pres- ent an overview on ways to reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 contagion in dentistry by focusing on the immediate situation as well as by look- ing towards the future. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To reach the review purpose, we selected a series of studies using keywords “COVID-19” OR “SARS-CoV-2” in association with “dentistry” AND “safety proto- cols” AND “healthcare procedures” AND “individ- ual protection dispositive” AND “air transmission” AND “droplet”. We selected papers exclusively in English language, up to 1st January 2022. RESULTS: During future phases of the pan- demic, everywhere in the World, it is necessary to impose all dentistry team both a serological screening and the vaccination, as already estab- lished for all health staff in Italy. CONCLUSIONS: For own safety, it is an import- ant for the whole dentistry category constantly update the devices and the protocols adopted, as well as monitoring the real infectious threats, which may occur

    Single-stranded oligodeoxynucleotides induce plant defence in Arabidopsis thaliana

    Background and AimsSingle-stranded DNA oligodeoxynucleotides (ssODNs) have been shown to elicit immune responses in mammals. In plants, RNA and genomic DNA can activate immunity, although the exact mechanism through which they are sensed is not clear. The aim of this work was to study the possible effect of ssODNs on plant immunity.Key ResultsThe ssODNs IMT504 and 2006 increased protection against the pathogens Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 and Botrytis cinerea but not against tobacco mosaic virus-Cg when infiltrated in Arabidopsis thaliana. In addition, ssODNs inhibited root growth and promoted stomatal closure in a concentration-dependent manner, with half-maximal effective concentrations between 0.79 and 2.06 µM. Promotion of stomatal closure by ssODNs was reduced by DNase I treatment. It was also diminished by the NADPH oxidase inhibitor diphenyleneiodonium and by coronatine, a bacterial toxin that inhibits NADPH oxidase-dependent reactive oxygen species (ROS) synthesis in guard cells. In addition it was found that ssODN-mediated stomatal closure was impaired in bak1-5, bak1-5/bkk1, mpk3 and npr1-3 mutants. ssODNs also induced early expression of MPK3, WRKY33, PROPEP1 and FRK1 genes involved in plant defence, an effect that was reduced in bak1-5 and bak1-5/bkk1 mutants.ConclusionsssODNs are capable of inducing protection against pathogens through the activation of defence genes and promotion of stomatal closure through a mechanism similar to that of other elicitors of plant immunity, which involves the BAK1 co-receptor, and ROS synthesis.Fil: Toum, Laila.     Lignans: quantitative analysis of the research literature

    The current study provides a comprehensive overview and analysis of the lignan literature. Data for the current study were extracted from the electronic Web of Science Core Collection database via the search string TOPIC = (lignan*) and processed by the VOSviewer software. The search yielded 10,742 publications. The ratio of original articles to reviews was 14.6:1. Over 80% of the analyzed papers have been published since the year 2000 and nearly 50% since the year 2010. Many of the publications were focused on pharmacology, chemistry, and plant sciences. The United States and Asian countries, such as China, Japan, South Korea, and India, were the most productive producers of lignan publications. Among the 5 most productive institutions was the University of Helsinki in Finland, the country that ranked 9th. Nineteen journals collectively published 3,607 lignan publications and were considered as core journals. Their impact factor did not correlate with the proportion of uncited papers. Highly cited publications usually mentioned phytoestrogen, isoflavone, daidzein, enterodiol, enterolactone, equol, genistein, and isoflavonoid. Cancer (e.g., breast cancer), cardiovascular disease, and antioxidation were the major themes. Clinical trials were estimated to contribute to 0.21.1% of the analyzed body of literature, so more of them should be conducted in the future to substantiate the beneficial effects and optimal dose of lignan intake in humans.     Photospheric radius expansion X-ray bursts as standard candles

    We examined the maximum bolometric peak luminosities during type I X-ray bursts from the persistent or transient luminous X-ray sources in globular clusters. We show that for about two thirds of the sources the maximum peak luminosities during photospheric radius expansion X-ray bursts extend to a critical value of (3.79+/-0.15)x10^{38} erg/s, assuming the total X-ray burst emission is entirely due to black-body radiation and the recorded maximum luminosity is the actual peak luminosity. This empirical critical luminosity is consistent with the Eddington luminosity limit for hydrogen poor material. Since the critical luminosity is more or less always reached during photospheric radius expansion X-ray bursts (except for one source), such bursts may be regarded as empirical standard candles. However, because significant deviations do occur, our standard candle is only accurate to within 15%.     BAG3 promotes pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma growth by activating stromal macrophages

    The incidence and death rate of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) have increased in recent years, therefore the identification of novel targets for treatment is extremely important. Interactions between cancer and stromal cells are critically involved in tumour formation and development of metastasis. Here we report that PDAC cells secrete BAG3, which binds and activates macrophages, inducing their activation and the secretion of PDAC supporting factors. We also identify IFITM-2 as a BAG3 receptor and show that it signals through PI3K and the p38 MAPK pathways. Finally, we show that the use of an anti-BAG3 antibody results in reduced tumour growth and prevents metastasis formation in three different mouse models. In conclusion, we identify a paracrine loop involved in PDAC growth and metastatic spreading, and show that an anti-BAG3 antibody has therapeutic potential

    Masculinidades e práticas de saúde na região metropolitana de Belo Horizonte - MG

    O objetivo desta investigação foi identificar e analisar as representações sociais de saúde e de doença e as práticas de saúde masculina junto a homens residentes na Região Metropolitana de Belo Horizonte-MG. Foram entrevistados 100 sujeitos com idade entre 45 e 55 anos. Os dados foram submetidos às análises de evocação e de conteúdo. RESULTADOS: elementos centrais da Representação Social (RS) de saúde: "bem-estar", "cuidado" e "importante". Elementos periféricos próximos: "alegria/felicidade" e "alimentação". Elementos centrais da RS de doença: "tristeza" e "dor". Elementos periféricos próximos: "sofrimento" e "morte". Definição de "cuidar da saúde": "cuidar da alimentação" (17,25% das respostas) e "praticar atividades físicas" (11,11%). Dos sujeitos, 52% afirmaram que cuidam da própria saúde e 34% que o fazem "às vezes". Quem contribui para o cuidado com a própria saúde: "eu mesmo" (29,63%), "esposa" (25,93%). Busca por atendimento médico: "às vezes" no Hospital (69% dos sujeitos; motivo principal: "dor forte/persistente", 13,87% das respostas) ou nos consultórios (72% dos sujeitos; motivo principal: "exames de rotina", 22,22% das respostas). A análise dos resultados indica a percepção mais geral do cuidar da saúde como um conjunto de práticas individuais objetivando o "bem-estar". Os resultados também indicam considerável quantidade de ações objetivando os cuidados com a saúde, o que contraria parte das percepções tradicionais quanto à fraca associação entre masculinidades e cuidado de si
