    Summer squash morphophysiology under salt stress and exogenous application of H2O2 in hydroponic cultivation

    Summer squash is a vegetable of significant acceptance in the market due to its economic and nutritionalimportance, with the potential for expansion in the food industry. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the gas exchange and growth of summer squash plants subjected to a saline nutrient solution and exogenous application of hydrogen peroxide. The study was conducted in a greenhouse in Pombal – PB. The cultivation system used was the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) hydroponic system. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 4 x 4 factorial arrangement, whose treatments consisted of four levels of electrical conductivityof the nutrient solution - ECns (2.1, 3.1, 4.1, and 5.1 dS m-1) and four concentrations of  hydrogen peroxide – H2O2 (0, 20, 40, and 60 μM), with three replications. The increase in the nutrient solution salinity from 2.1 dS m-1 reduced the leaf area and transpiration of the summer squash plants. Hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of 40 μM increased the root length, the instantaneous carboxylation efficiency, and the CO2 assimilation rate when the plants were subjected to the saline solution of 2.1 dS m-1. Also, the application of 60 μM H2O2 mitigated the effect of salt stress on the internal CO2 concentration and stomatal conductance of the summer squash plants.A abobrinha italiana é uma hortaliça de grande aceitação no mercado, por apresentar importância econômica e nutricional, com potencial para expansão na indústria alimentar. Nesse contexto, objetiva-se nessa pesquisa avaliar como trocas gasosas e o crescimento da abobrinha italiana submetida a solução nutritiva salina e aplicação exógena de peróxido de hidrogênio. O trabalho foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, em Pombal - PB. O sistema de cultivo utilizado foi o hidropônico tipo Técnica de Fluxo Laminar de Nutriente - NFT. O delineamento experimental foi casualizado, sem esquema fatorial 4 x 4, utilizado consistindo de quatro níveis salinos de solução nutritiva - CEsn (2,1; 3,1; 4,1 e 5,1 dS m 2 S 2 -1 ), e de peróxido de hidrogênio - H (0; 20; 40 e 60 μM), com 3 repetições. O aumento da salinidade da solução nutritiva a partir de 2,1 dS m -1 reduz a área foliar e a respiração das plantas de abobrinha. O peróxido de hidrogênio com concentração de 40 μM de incremento ou comprimento de raiz, uma eficiência instantânea de carboxilação e os índices de assimilação de CO 2 quando submetido a uma solução salina de 2,1 dS m -1 , como também uma aplicação de 60 μM possui o efeito de estresse salino sobre a concentração interna de CO 2 e a condutância estomática das plantas

    Saline water and nitrogen doses in the cultivation of West Indian cherry in the post-grafting phase

    This study aimed to evaluate the photosynthetic pigments and growth of the West Indian cherry cv. BRS 366 Jaburu in the post-grafting phase as a function of the salinity levels of the irrigation water and nitrogen fertilization under greenhouse conditions, in the municipality of Campina Grande-PB. The study was performed in randomized blocks, consisting of two levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water - ECw (0.8 and 4.5 dS m-1) and four nitrogen doses (70, 85, 100, and 115% of the recommended dose for the crop), with three replications. The synthesis of chlorophyll a and carotenoids in the West Indian cherry plants was inhibited with ECw of 4.5 dS m-1. Nitrogen fertilization in the estimated doses of 92 and 80% of N reduced the effects of salt stress on the contents of chlorophyll a and b in West Indian cherry plants, at 630 days after transplanting. The increment in nitrogen fertilization increases quadratically the absolute and relative growth rate of the diameter in the rootstock of the West Indian cherry plants under irrigation with saline waters.This study aimed to evaluate the photosynthetic pigments and growth of the West Indian cherry cv.     AVALIAÇÃO DA CONCENTREAÇÃO DO LACTATO DESIDROGENASE EM CADELAS PORTADORAS DE NEOPLASIAS MAMÁRIAS

    The increase in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity is associated with hypoxia due to the rapid proliferation of cancer cells and high metabolic demands. Few studies have evaluated the LDH concentration in canine mammary tumor (CMT). Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate serum LDH concentrations in CMT and its association with prognostic factors. Thirty bitches participated in the work and were divided equally into two groups, with and without CMT. The average concentration of LDH was significantly higher in CMT (424.9±244.4 U / L) compared to the control group (299.0±170.3 U / L) and its values were positively correlated with inflammation and / or macroscopic ulceration (r=0.6), tumor size (r=0.5), histopathological grade (r=0.6), metastatic lymph node (r=0.7) and clinical stage (r=0.5).O aumento da atividade da lactato desidrogenase (LDH) está associado à hipóxia devido à rápida proliferação de células cancerígenas e altas demandas metabólicas. Poucos estudos avaliaram a concentração de LDH em tumor mamário canino (CMT). Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as concentrações séricas de LDH na CMT e sua associação com fatores prognósticos. Trinta cadelas participaram do trabalho e foram divididas igualmente em dois grupos, com e sem CMT.     Saline water and potassium fertilization in cultivation of grafted west indian cherry ˜BRS 366 Jaburu

    Agricultural exploitation in the semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil depends on the use of irrigation to guarantee safe production of crops. Nevertheless, the waters commonly used in this region have high levels of salts and require management strategies that make their use possible in agriculture. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate water relations, photosynthetic pigments and growth of grafted West Indian cherry as a function of saline water irrigation and potassium (K) fertilization. The study was conducted under greenhouse conditions in lysimeters filled with eutrophic Regolithic Neosol with sandy loam texture, in the municipality of Campina Grande-PB, Brazil. Treatments were distributed in randomized blocks and consisted of two factors: two levels of irrigation water electrical conductivity - ECw (0.8 and 3.8 dS m-1) and four K doses (50, 75; 100 and 125% of the recommendation), with three replicates and one plant per plot. The 100% dose corresponded to 19.8 g of K2O per plant per year. The West Indian cherry crop was sensitive to water salinity of 3.8 dS m-1 in the post-grafting phase, resulting in a decline in photosynthetic pigment content and growth. Increasing K doses reduced the percentage of cell membrane damage and promoted increase in the synthesis of chlorophyll a and carotenoids in West Indian cherry plants. There was significant interaction between salinity levels and K doses for the leaf osmotic potential, water saturation deficit, percentage of cell membrane damage and chlorophyll b content in West Indian cherry plants

    There is strong evidence that inflammation plays a key role in all stages of tumorigenesis. In human medicine, C-reactive protein (CRP) is frequently used in tests for neoplastic biomarkers, however, few studies are available on the serum concentration of CRP in cases of canine mammary tumors (CMT). The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum concentrations of CRP in bitches with CMT and its association with prognostic factors. Thirty bitches participated in the work, which were equally divided into two groups, with and without CMT. Bitches with CMT have higher concentrations of CRP (4.0±1.9mg/L) compared to the control group (1.0±1.2mg/L) and their values were positively correlated with inflammation and/or macroscopic ulceration (r=0.4), tumor size (r=0.6), histopathological grade (r=0.6), metastatic lymph node (r=0.6) and clinical stage (r=0.8).Há fortes evidências de que a inflamação desempenha um papel fundamental em todos os estágios da tumorigênese. Na medicina humana, a proteína C-reativa (PCR) é frequentemente utilizada em testes para biomarcadores neoplásicos, entretanto, poucos estudos estão disponíveis sobre a concentração sérica de PCR em casos de tumores mamários caninos (CMT). O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as concentrações séricas de PCR em cadelas com CMT e sua associação com fatores prognósticos.     ABORDAGEM DIAGNÓSTICA DE MASTOCITOMA CUTÂNEO METASTÁTICO EM CANINO

    Mast cell tumors are one of the most common skin neoplasms that affect dogs. The diagnosis is based on clinical and laboratory aspects, with cytology and histopathology being the preferred methods. Therefore, this study aims to report the importance of the broad diagnostic approach of metastatic cutaneous mastocytoma in a castrated a female dog attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the State University of Ceará, with a neoformation in a member compatible with mast cell tumor. The patient’s staging was performed through laboratory tests of complete blood count, aspiration cytology of regional lymph nodes and bone marrow, which showed the presence of focus of metastasis, as well as the abdominal ultrasound examination, which showed changes in the liver parenchymas and right medial iliac lymphadenopathy. Given the suspicions, the patient was euthanized and the body was sent for necropsy and histopathological examination, which confirmed the diagnosis of high-grade cutaneous mast cell tumor, with metastasis in the liver, lung, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. Thus, it can be is concluded that mast cell tumor is a neoplasm of multifactorial diagnosis, where hematological tests associated with cytology, histopathological, and imaging analyses are essential to establish the definitive diagnosis to determine a better therapeutic behavior and prognosis of canine patients.O mastocitoma é uma das neoplasias cutâneas mais comuns que acometem cães. O diagnóstico da doença é baseado em aspectos clínicos e laboratoriais, sendo a citologia e a histopatologia os métodos de eleição. Diante disso, o objetivo deste estudo é relatar a importância da ampla abordagem diagnóstica de mastocitoma cutâneo metastático em uma fêmea canina castrada, atendida no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Estadual do Ceará, com uma neoformação em membro compatível com mastocitoma. O estadiamento da paciente foi feito através de exames laboratoriais de hemograma completo, e citologia aspirativa de linfonodo regional e medula óssea, que evidenciaram a presença de focos de metástase; bem como do exame de ultrassom abdominal, que evidenciou alterações no parênquima hepático e linfoadenomegalia ilíaco medial direita. Diante das suspeitas, optou-se pela eutanasia da paciente, cujo corpo foi enviado para os exames de necropsia e histopatologia, os quais confirmaram o diagnóstico de mastocitoma cutâneo de alto grau, com metástase em fígado, pulmão, medula e linfonodos. Desta forma pode-se concluir que o mastocitoma cutâneo metastático é uma neoplasia de diagnóstico multifatorial, em que a realização de exames hematológicos associados às análises citológicas, histopatológicas e de imagem são indispensáveis para estabelecer o diagnóstico definitivo para qu seja determinada uma melhor conduta terapêutica e prognóstico de pacientes caninos

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.     Rationale, study design, and analysis plan of the Alveolar Recruitment for ARDS Trial (ART): Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

    Background: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is associated with high in-hospital mortality. Alveolar recruitment followed by ventilation at optimal titrated PEEP may reduce ventilator-induced lung injury and improve oxygenation in patients with ARDS, but the effects on mortality and other clinical outcomes remain unknown. This article reports the rationale, study design, and analysis plan of the Alveolar Recruitment for ARDS Trial (ART). Methods/Design: ART is a pragmatic, multicenter, randomized (concealed), controlled trial, which aims to determine if maximum stepwise alveolar recruitment associated with PEEP titration is able to increase 28-day survival in patients with ARDS compared to conventional treatment (ARDSNet strategy). We will enroll adult patients with ARDS of less than 72 h duration. The intervention group will receive an alveolar recruitment maneuver, with stepwise increases of PEEP achieving 45 cmH(2)O and peak pressure of 60 cmH2O, followed by ventilation with optimal PEEP titrated according to the static compliance of the respiratory system. In the control group, mechanical ventilation will follow a conventional protocol (ARDSNet). In both groups, we will use controlled volume mode with low tidal volumes (4 to 6 mL/kg of predicted body weight) and targeting plateau pressure <= 30 cmH2O. The primary outcome is 28-day survival, and the secondary outcomes are: length of ICU stay; length of hospital stay; pneumothorax requiring chest tube during first 7 days; barotrauma during first 7 days; mechanical ventilation-free days from days 1 to 28; ICU, in-hospital, and 6-month survival. ART is an event-guided trial planned to last until 520 events (deaths within 28 days) are observed. These events allow detection of a hazard ratio of 0.75, with 90% power and two-tailed type I error of 5%. All analysis will follow the intention-to-treat principle. Discussion: If the ART strategy with maximum recruitment and PEEP titration improves 28-day survival, this will represent a notable advance to the care of ARDS patients.
