A Selective, Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Method for the Oxidative Cleavage of Glycols

    Get PDF
A catalytic methodology for the oxidative cleavage of vicinal diols is described as an advantageous alternative in terms of the environmental impact on classical methods involving toxic oxidants. The novel strategy is based on the use of dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes as catalysts and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as an oxidant and displays high selectivity and a broad scope for glycol cleavage. In addition, the developed system is also useful for the oxidation of acyloins to diketones.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO) and FEDER (CTQ2013-48937-C2-1-P) and Junta de Castilla y León (BU237U13

Non-motor symptom burden in patients with Parkinson's disease with impulse control disorders and compulsive behaviours : results from the COPPADIS cohort

    Get PDF
The study was aimed at analysing the frequency of impulse control disorders (ICDs) and compulsive behaviours (CBs) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and in control subjects (CS) as well as the relationship between ICDs/CBs and motor, nonmotor features and dopaminergic treatment in PD patients. Data came from COPPADIS-2015, an observational, descriptive, nationwide (Spain) study. We used the validated Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Disease-Rating Scale (QUIP-RS) for ICD/CB screening. The association between demographic data and ICDs/CBs was analyzed in both groups. In PD, this relationship was evaluated using clinical features and treatment-related data. As result, 613 PD patients (mean age 62.47 ± 9.09 years, 59.87% men) and 179 CS (mean age 60.84 ± 8.33 years, 47.48% men) were included. ICDs and CBs were more frequent in PD (ICDs 12.7% vs. 1.6%, p < 0.001; CBs 7.18% vs. 1.67%, p = 0.01). PD patients had more frequent previous ICDs history, premorbid impulsive personality and antidepressant treatment (p < 0.05) compared with CS. In PD, patients with ICDs/CBs presented younger age at disease onset, more frequent history of previous ICDs and premorbid personality (p < 0.05), as well as higher comorbidity with nonmotor symptoms, including depression and poor quality of life. Treatment with dopamine agonists increased the risk of ICDs/CBs, being dose dependent (p < 0.05). As conclusions, ICDs and CBs were more frequent in patients with PD than in CS. More nonmotor symptoms were present in patients with PD who had ICDs/CBs compared with those without. Dopamine agonists have a prominent effect on ICDs/CBs, which could be influenced by dose

Pyridine-2-thionate as a versatile ligand in Pd(II) and Pt(II) chemistry: the presence of three different co-ordination modes in [Pd2(µ2-S,N-C5H4SN)(µ2-2S-C5H4SN)(µ2-dppm)(S-C5H4SN)2]

8 pages, 5 tables, 4 figures, 1 scheme.-- First published as an Advance Article on the web 28th Oct. 2005.Reactions of [MCl2(L–L)], M = Pt, Pd; L–L = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) or bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe), with NaC5H4SN in a 1 : 2 molar ratio lead to mononuclear species [M(S-C5H4SN)2(P–P)], M = Pt; L–L = dppm ( 1) or dppe ( 2) and M = Pd; L–L = dppe ( 3), as well as to the dinuclear [Pd2(µ2-S,N-C5H4SN)(µ2-2S-C5H4SN)(µ2-dppm)(S-C5H4SN)2] ( 4). In contrast, reaction of [MCl2(dppm)] with NaC5H4SN in a 1 : 1 molar ratio leads to [Pd2(µ2-S,N-C5H4SN)3(µ2-dppm)]Cl ( 5) and trans-[Pt(S-C5H4SN)2(PPh2Me)2] ( 6) respectively. The latter is formed in low yield by cleavage of the dppm ligand. The dinuclear derivatives 4 and 5 present an A-frame and lantern structure, respectively. The former showing three different co-ordination modes in the same molecule with a short Pd–Pd distance of 2.9583 (9) Å and the latter with three bridging S,N thionate ligands showing a shorter Pd–Pd distance of 2.7291 (13) Å. Both distances could be imposed by the bridging ligands or point to some sort of metal–metal interaction.Financial support from MCyT-Spain-(BQU2002-04090-CO2-01 and BQU2002-00435) and JCyL-Spain-(BU15/03) is gratefully acknowledged.Peer reviewe

(Table S1) Description of two-way traveltimes from different Sites of IODP Exp339

The Contourite Depositional Systems (CDS) in the Gulf of Cádiz and on the West Iberian margin preserve a unique archive of Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW) variability over the past 5.3 Ma. These CDS have been recently drilled in several places during the IODP Expedition 339. These drill sites now offer a new window to the internal Pliocene and Quaternary architecture of the CDS. In this study, we use downhole and core Gamma Ray (GR) data acquired from 5 sites drilled in the CDS along the middle slope and 1 site drilled in the deeper setting of the lower slope, out of the MOW path. The GR data primarily tracks the clay content in the sediment and is the expression of sediment supply and, for sites drilled in the CDS, of the bottom current processes. Both appear astronomically controlled as shown by spectral analysis performed on the GR data. Results also reveal that the GR log patterns correlate well across the sites over the last 1.4 My. Several GR horizons corresponding to drops in GR values were identified, most of which fit with coarse-grained deposits observed in cores and interpreted as contourite beds. The GR horizons are interpreted as isochronous horizons, providing a regional scale chronostratigraphic framework for the CDS depositional records with an accuracy of ~ 20 ky. We further assess the spatial and temporal variability of the CDS hiatuses at the regional scale

(1,3,4-Oxadiazole)copper(II) compounds: Dimensionality, magnetism and nuclease activity

The work presented here describes the synthesis of new copper(II) complexes derived from 2-amino-5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (L1) and 2-methylamino-5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (L2) which also incorporate azido (N3 -), thiocyanato (NCS-), cyanato (NCO-), dicyanamido [N(CN)2 -, dca] and malonato (C3H2O4 2-, mal) coligands. Structures of the [Cu(L2)(mal)(H2O)]·2H 2O(1), [{Cu(L2)(mal)}2] (2), [Cu(L 2)2-(NCS)2] (3), [Cu(L1)(NCS) 2]n (4) and [{Cu(L2)}2(dca) 2](ClO4)2·2H2O (5) compounds show the dependence of the dimensionality on parameters such as the type of oxadiazole and coligand utilised, solvents or reaction times. In this sense, 1 and 3 are mononuclear complexes, 2 contains centrosymmetric dinuclear entities, 4 is a 1D compound in which thiocyanato groups act as end-to-end bridges and 5 shows a 2D arrangement of dinuclear motifs linked through dicyanamido spacers. The copper(II) ions acquire distorted octahedral (3 and 4), square-pyramidal (1 and 2) and trigonal bipyramidal (5) geometries. Stacking π-π interactions and hydrogen bonds stabilise the crystal frameworks. Water tetramers are present in 1. Spectroscopic (infrared, UV/Vis absorption and electron spin resonance) studies have also been developed for 1-5 and for the Cu(L2)(dca) 2(H2O) (6), Cu(L2)(NCO)2 (7) and Cu(L2)2(N3)2(H2O) 2 (8) complexes. The studies suggest the coordination of oxadiazole and coligands in all cases. Magnetic measurements show antiferromagnetic coupling for compound 5, ferromagnetic interactions for compound 2 and paramagnetic behaviour in compound 4. The susceptibility data were fitted by using the Bleaney-Bowers' equation for the copper(II) dimers derived from H = -2JS1S2. The resultant J/k values are +2.15 and -38.3 K for compounds 2 and 5, respectively. Magneto-structural correlations are discussed and extended to more than 30 published dinuclear Cu(NN) 2Cu′ diazole-only bridged compounds. All these systems show J values close to or greater than those given by the expression J ≈ -90 + 3 Δβ (where Δβ is the difference between the Cu-N-N and Cu-N′-N′ angles). The artificial nuclease activity of 1, 2, 3 and 5 in the presence of mercaptopropionic acid or glutathione has also been analysed and compared with that exhibited by [Cu(L2)2(H 2O)2](NO3)2 and CuSO4. © Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
