    Applications of machine learning tools to problems of physical interest are often criticized for producing sensitivity at the expense of transparency. To address this concern, we explore a data planing procedure for identifying combinations of variables -- aided by physical intuition -- that can discriminate signal from background. Weights are introduced to smooth away the features in a given variable(s). New networks are then trained on this modified data. Observed decreases in sensitivity diagnose the variable's discriminating power. Planing also allows the investigation of the linear versus non-linear nature of the boundaries between signal and background. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach using a toy example, followed by an application to an idealized heavy resonance scenario at the Large Hadron Collider.     Nonlinear dynamics and intermittency in a long-term copepod time series

    We consider the nonlinear dynamics of a long-term copepod (small crustaceans) time series sampled weekly in the Mediterranean sea from 1967 to 1992. Such population dynamics display a high variability that we consider here in an interdisciplinary study, using tools borrowed from the field of statistical physics. We analyse the extreme events of male and female abundances, and of the total population, and show that they both have heavy tailed probability density functions (pdf). We provide hyperbolic fits of the form p(x) ∼ 1/xμ+1, and estimate the value of μ using Hill’s estimator. We then study the ratio of male to female abundances, compared to the female abundances. Using conditional probability density functions and conditional averages, we show that this ratio is independent of the female density, when the latter is larger than a given threshold. This property is very useful for modelization. We also consider the product of male to female abundances, which can be ecologically related to the encounters. We show that this product is extremely intermittent, and link its pdf to the female pdf

    Biotic soil-plant interaction processes explain most of hysteretic soil CO2 efux response to temperature in cross-factorial mesocosm experiment

    Ecosystem carbon fux partitioning is strongly infuenced by poorly constrained soil CO2 efux (Fsoil). Simple model applications (Arrhenius and Q10) do not account for observed diel hysteresis between Fsoil and soil temperature. How this hysteresis emerges and how it will respond to variation in vegetation or soil moisture remains unknown. We used an ecosystem-level experimental system to independently control potential abiotic and biotic drivers of the Fsoil-T hysteresis. We hypothesized a principally biological cause for the hysteresis. Alternatively, Fsoil hysteresis is primarily driven by thermal convection through the soil profle. We conducted experiments under normal, fuctuating diurnal soil temperatures and under conditions where we held soil temperature near constant. We found (i) signifcant and nearly equal amplitudes of hysteresis regardless of soil temperature regime, and (ii) the amplitude of hysteresis was most closely tied to baseline rates of Fsoil, which were mostly driven by photosynthetic rates. Together, these fndings suggest a more biologically-driven mechanism associated with photosynthate transport in yielding the observed patterns of soil CO2 efux being out of sync with soil temperature.     Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome associated with COVID-19: An Emulated Target Trial Analysis.

    RATIONALE: Whether COVID patients may benefit from extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) compared with conventional invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the effect of ECMO on 90-Day mortality vs IMV only Methods: Among 4,244 critically ill adult patients with COVID-19 included in a multicenter cohort study, we emulated a target trial comparing the treatment strategies of initiating ECMO vs. no ECMO within 7 days of IMV in patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (PaO2/FiO2 <80 or PaCO2 ≥60 mmHg). We controlled for confounding using a multivariable Cox model based on predefined variables. MAIN RESULTS: 1,235 patients met the full eligibility criteria for the emulated trial, among whom 164 patients initiated ECMO. The ECMO strategy had a higher survival probability at Day-7 from the onset of eligibility criteria (87% vs 83%, risk difference: 4%, 95% CI 0;9%) which decreased during follow-up (survival at Day-90: 63% vs 65%, risk difference: -2%, 95% CI -10;5%). However, ECMO was associated with higher survival when performed in high-volume ECMO centers or in regions where a specific ECMO network organization was set up to handle high demand, and when initiated within the first 4 days of MV and in profoundly hypoxemic patients. CONCLUSIONS: In an emulated trial based on a nationwide COVID-19 cohort, we found differential survival over time of an ECMO compared with a no-ECMO strategy. However, ECMO was consistently associated with better outcomes when performed in high-volume centers and in regions with ECMO capacities specifically organized to handle high demand.     International audienceTwo different precursor genes encoding the decapeptide salmon GnRH (sGnRH) are present in most salmonid species. In rainbow trout, a precedent Southern blot study revealed the existence of two different sGnRH genes and, recently, two different genes and their complementary DNAs that encode the identical peptide sGnRH were isolated from ovary and testis. Our study confirms the existence of two different mRNAs encoding sGnRH (sGnRH mRNA-I and sGnRH mRNA-II) in the brain of rainbow trout and, for the first time, full-length complementary DNA sequences are given. Central and peripheral distributions of the two messengers are described and seem to indicate different regulation of their expression. sGnRH mRNA-I is found essentially in the olfactory bulbs and telencephalon, whereas sGnRH mRNA-II is more widely expressed in the brain. Our observations allow speculation on the respective roles of two genes encoding the same decapeptide

    Unliganded Estrogen Receptor Alpha Promotes PC12 Survival during Serum Starvation

    Many studies have reported proliferative, differentiating or protective effects of estradiol, notably through estrogen receptor alpha (ERα). On the contrary, the ligand-independent action of ERα is currently poorly documented notably in cell protection. The stable transfection of wild type, substituted or truncated form of ERα in PC12 cells (ERα negative cell line) lead the specific study of its ligand-independent action. Hence, we demonstrate here that, in the absence of E 2, the expression of ERα prevents cells from apoptosis induced by serum deprivation. This protection is not due to an ERE-mediated transcription and does not require either AF-1 or AF-2 transactivation functions. It is afforded to the Y537 residue of ERα and activation of c-Src/Stat3 signaling pathway
