    Percepção ambiental dos produtores e qualidade do solo em propriedades orgùnicas e convencionais.

    O sistema orgĂąnico de produção deve resultar na utilização mais racional dos recursos naturais, sobretudo do solo. Os produtores orgĂąnicos devem adotar prĂĄticas conservacionistas, alĂ©m de atender a outros princĂ­pios deste sistema de produção. Neste trabalho foram avaliadas as prĂĄticas de manejo e conservação do solo adotadas por produtores orgĂąnicos e convencionais nas regiĂ”es dos municĂ­pios de Socorro (Serra da Mantiqueira e Mogiana) e IbiĂșna, situados no Estado de SĂŁo Paulo. O objetivo dessa pesquisa foi verificar o grau de adoção de prĂĄticas conservacionistas pelos produtores e avaliar a qualidade do solo na agricultura orgĂąnica e convencional. Foi elaborado e aplicado um questionĂĄrio, com visitas locais para verificação das prĂĄticas conservacionistas e ocorrĂȘncia de erosĂŁo, em 30 propriedades. Os resultados foram expressos em Ă­ndices indicadores de diversidade de uso do solo, atitude conservacionista, percepção de erosĂŁo e do impacto sobre os recursos hĂ­dricos. Foram tambĂ©m realizadas anĂĄlises de atributos quĂ­micos, fĂ­sicos e biolĂłgicos indicadores da qualidade do solo. Concluiu-se que os produtores orgĂąnicos tĂȘm maior percepção quanto Ă  atitude conservacionista e nas propriedades orgĂąnicas hĂĄ maior diversidade de cultivos, embora nĂŁo haja maior diversidade geral de uso do solo. A produção orgĂąnica de alface, em IbiĂșna proporcionou maior atividade biolĂłgica no solo e maior colonização por fungos micorrĂ­zicos arbusculares. O sistema orgĂąnico possui maiores teores de matĂ©ria orgĂąnica e menores de potĂĄssio e nĂŁo houve diferença entre os atributos fĂ­sicos do solo dos sistemas orgĂąnico e convencional

    Estudo fitoquímico de folhas de Solanum lycocarpum A. St.-Hil (Solanaceae) e sua aplicação na alelopatia

    (Phytochemistry of Solanum lycocarpum A.St.–Hil (Solanaceae) leaves and their application in allelopathy). Solanum lycocarpum A.St.-Hil (Solanaceae) is a typical shrub in the Cerrado of central Brazil. The allelopathic activity of aqueous extracts of the leaves and fruits of this species has already been proven in previous studies. The goal of this work was to verify the allelopathic activity of different leaf extracts of S. lycocarpum on the germination and growth of four target species. The leaves were collected, dried, triturated and submitted to two distinct methods of extraction: 1- liquid--liquid (ethyl acetate and dichloromethane) from the aqueous extract and 2- with solvents of increasing polarities (hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, acetone, methanol and water) directly from the leaves. Each extraction was made with ultrasound equipment for one hour, filtered and evaporated. From these extracts, solutions of 800, 400 and 200 ppm were prepared, and water and Logran¼ were used as positive and negative controls, respectively. Each solution, as well as the controls, was dissolved in DMSO for the bioassays. The target species used were lettuce, watercress, tomato and onion. To each plate, 20 seeds were added and 1 mL of the tested solutions (with 4 repetitions). The plates were incubated at 25 oC without light, and the shoots and roots of the seedlings were then measured and the percentage of germination and the inhibition of each extract were calculated. Tomato was the most sensitive to the extracts, followed by watercress, onion and lettuce. The extracts with stronger activity were AcOEt, acetone and the liquid-liquid extraction, indicating the fractions that may contain the active principles of the leaves in this species

    Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

    BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.     Profile of cortisol, glycaemia, and blood parameters of American Bullfrog tadpoles Lithobates catesbeianus exposed to density and hypoxia stressors

    The aim of this study was to evaluate alterations to the physiological profile (cortisol, glycaemia, and blood parameters) of Lithobates catesbeianus caused by the stressors density and hypoxia. The organisms were in the prometamorphosis stage and exposed to different tadpole densities: 1 tadpole/L (T1), 5 tadpoles/L (T2), and 10 tadpoles/L (T3) for 12 days. The blood was collected through the rupture of the caudal blood vessel and collected under normoxia (immediate collection) and hypoxia (after 15 minutes of air exposure) conditions. Cortisol levels rose on the fourth and eighth days of treatment and returned to basal levels by the end of the experiment. The stressor mechanisms tested did not affect glycaemia. White blood cells (total number of lymphocytes, neutrophils, and eosinophils) showed a significant difference at the twelfth day of the experiment when compared with the start of the experiment. We concluded that, under controlled conditions, a density of up to 10 tadpoles/L and air exposure for 15 minutes did not cause harmful physiological alterations during the experimental period. The answer to these stressors maybe was in another hormonal level (corticosterone)
