Emerging pharmacological treatments to prevent abdominal aortic aneurysm growth and rupture

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a local expansion of the abdominal aorta wall caused by a complex multifactorial maladaptive vascular remodeling. Despite recent advances in the management of cardiovascular diseases, there currently is no established drug therapy for AAA. Since the probability of death from a ruptured AAA still remains high, preventive elective repair of AAAs larger than 5.5 cm in luminal diameter is considered the best treatment option. However, perioperative complications are problematic as elective AAA repair comes with numerous intrinsic risks. Impelled by the need of improving AAA therapy, significant efforts have been made to identify pharmacological tools that would slow down AAA enlargement and lower the risk of rupture, thereby reducing the necessity of surgical intervention. In this review, we discuss recent findings addressing molecular targets that could potentially treat AAA, particularly addressing: statins, classical renin angiotensin system (RAS) blockers, the protective arm of RAS, renin inhibitors, tetracyclines, interleukin-1 beta inhibition, anti-angiogenic agents and urocortins

Leaderships and participatory processes: A reflection on democratic citizenship

O presente artigo reflete sobre o potencial das lideranças na gestão estratégica do espaço público, em particular a partir das dinâmicas concertados do poder local com a comunidade. Propomos uma reflexão teórica sobre os estilos de liderança fundamentados no pensamento de Daniel Goleman, convergindo para a necessidade de compreender tais pressupostos na praxis de uma líder autárquica. O estudo de caso pretendeu compreender os canais de comunicação entre líder e liderados e daí contextualizar a importância deste referencial teórico na condução de processos participativos no espaço local; a sua relação com a cidadania democrática, bem como o lugar da educação na encruzilhada de uma democracia possível. Concluímos que as questões de partilha de poder e/ou delegação de competências interferem com a real abertura dos atores sociais no decorrer dos processos participativos, sendo necessário repensar a liderança de proximidade como fator crucial ao sucesso destas práticasThis paper reflects on the potential of leadership in the strategic management of public space, particularly from the concerted dynamics of local government to the community. We propose a theoretical reflection on the leadership styles based on the thoughts of Daniel Goleman, converging on the need to understand such assumptions in the praxis of a Mayor. The case study sought to understand the channels of communication between leader and led, and then contextualize the importance of this theoretical framework in conducting participatory processes in local space; its relation to democratic citizenship and the place of education at the crossroads of a possible democracy. We conclude that the issues of power sharing and / or delegation interfere with the actual opening of stakeholders during the participatory processes, it is necessary to rethink the leadership of proximity as a key factor to the success of these practice

This paper argues that the decline of myth and mythical thought is reversing and that the substitute of ancient myth in modern societies – politics – has been replaced by the speculative fiction genre of cinematic storytelling. With this in mind the paper creates a link between: our species ability to tell stories and our necessity to consume them; the importance and characteristics of myth and mythical thought; the human craving for mythical stories; the contemporary speculative fjction trend worldwide in the box offjce; and a study of the most infmuential fjlms of all time

Comunicação apresentada no 8º Congresso Nacional de Administração Pública – Desafios e Soluções, em Carcavelos de 21 a 22 de Novembro de 2011.Este artigo é uma reflexão sobre a nova fase da administração pública brasileira após as reformas da década de 1990, a criação das agências reguladoras e a tentativa de consolidação da relação das agências reguladoras com os cidadãos. O foco do artigo é tentar demonstrar que a participação social nas decisões das agências reguladoras constitui-se em importante investimento destinado a aperfeiçoar o processo de formulação e implementação de políticas públicas regulatórias. O artigo visa também esclarecer que a participação social é um elo fundamental para a boa governança, permitindo as agências reguladoras obter novas fontes de ideias relevantes, informações e recursos para a tomada de decisões. De igual importância é ressaltado que o aumento da participação social amplia o espectro da contribuição do cidadão e fortalece a construção da confiança pública nas agências reguladoras. A TIC – Tecnologia de Informação e Comunicação provavelmente pode ser a solução para a ampliação da participação cidadã. Países da OCDE têm alcançado um alto nível de participação social através da utilização destas tecnologias. O fator primordial posto em pauta neste artigo é que o sucesso da implementação de um Estado regulador dependerá principalmente de um maior envolvimento da população em geral nos assuntos regulatórios e na formulação e implementação de políticas públicas regulatórias

‘Videogametism’: Consolidating the recognition of video games as an art form

Because video games are still considered ’low culture’ by many whilst being one of the most important art forms of the XXI century, this pa­per proposes a new concept for the field of game studies with the main goal of being a useful tool for the consolidation of the artistic recognition of the medium. A few countries have officially recognized video games as an art form and im­plemented legislation to support video game artists and their work; unfortunately, many gov­ernments still do not recognize this artistic field. For video games to achieve a widespread artistic legitimation it is necessary more critical thinking and institutional validation. The proposed neolo­gism – ‘videogametism’ – is an appropriation of the Eisensteinian concept of ‘cinematism’ and, as Sergei Eisenstein’s legitimation term, ‘videog­ametism’ intends to support the recognition of video game artistic status, asserting that all art forms are present in this medium and that some artistic artifacts are ‘videogamatic’

Bioética, formação em valores e doutrinação : visão de licenciandos de ciências e biologia

A presente pesquisa, integrante de um projeto de doutorado, teve como foco a formação inicial de professores de Ciências e Biologia. O objetivo foi analisar se tal formação tem contribuído para a tematização e construção de valores e verificar sob a ótica dos licenciandos seu papel na formação ético-moral dos futuros estudantes. O percurso metodológico consistiu na análise de relatos de graduandos de três Instituições de Ensino Superior obtidos através de questionário. A partir da literatura voltada à educação em valores, constatou-se que os sujeitos reconhecem a contribuição das disciplinas científicas como espaço de promoção de valores ético-morais. Identificou-se fatores que favorecem e que inviabilizam a inserção da dimensão (bio)ética no ensino de ciências e a preparação desses futuros profissionais, entre eles o perigo da doutrinação
