Insights into the phylogenetic positions of photosynthetic bacteria obtained from 5S rRNA and 16S rRNA sequence data
Comparisons of complete 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) sequences established that the secondary structure of these molecules is highly conserved. Earlier work with 5S rRNA secondary structure revealed that when structural conservation exists the alignment of sequences is straightforward. The constancy of structure implies minimal functional change. Under these conditions a uniform evolutionary rate can be expected so that conditions are favorable for phylogenetic tree construction
Exploration of RNA structure spaces
In order to understand the structure of real structure spaces, we are studying the 5S rRNA structure space experimentally. A plasmid containing a synthetic 5S rRNA gene, two rRNA promoters, and transcription terminators has been assembled. Assays are conducted to determine if the foreign 5S rRNA is expressed, and to see whether or not it is incorporated into ribosomes. Evolutionary competition is used to determine the relative fitness of strains containing the foreign 5S rRNA and a control 5S rRNA. By using site directed mutagenesis, a number of mutants can be made in order to study the boundaries of the structure space and how sharply defined they are. By making similar studies in the vicinity of structure space, it will be possible to determine how homogeneous the 5S rRNA structure space is. Useable experimental protocols have been developed, and a number of mutants have already been studied. Initial results suggest an explanation of why single stranded regions of the RNA are less subject to mutation than double stranded regions

Amino acids precursors in lunar finds
The consistent pattern is discussed of amino acids found in lunar dust from Apollo missions. The evidence indicates that compounds yielding amino acids were implanted into the surface of the moon by the solar wind, and the kind and amounts of amino acids found on the moon are closely similar to those found in meteorites. It is concluded that there is a common cosmochemical pattern for the moom and meteorites, and this offers evidence of a common course of cosmochemical reactions for carbon
Computer program for calculating aerodynamic characteristics of upper-surface-blowing and over-wing-blowing configurations
The program is based on the inviscid wing-jet interaction theory of Lan and Campbell, and the jet entrainment theory of Lan. In the interaction theory, the flow perturbations are computed both inside and outside the jet, separately, and then matched on the jet surface to satisfy the jet boundary conditions. The jet Mach number is allowed to be different from the free stream value (Mach number nonuniformity). These jet boundary conditions require that the static pressure be continuous across the jet surface which must always remain as a stream surface. These conditions, as well as the wing-surface tangency condition, are satisified only in the linearized sense. Machine Assisted Proof of ARMv7 Instruction Level Isolation Properties
In this paper, we formally verify security properties of the ARMv7 Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) for user mode executions.
To obtain guarantees that arbitrary (and unknown) user processes are able to run isolated from privileged software and other user processes, instruction level noninterference and integrity properties are provided, along with proofs that transitions to privileged modes can only occur in a controlled manner.
This work establishes a main requirement for operating system and hypervisor verification, as demonstrated for the PROSPER separation kernel. The proof is performed in the HOL4 theorem prover, taking the Cambridge model of ARM as basis.
To this end, a proof tool has been developed, which assists the verification of relational state predicates semi-automatically
An Archaeological Study of the McPherson Road Extension Project Laredo, Texas
In October 1977, the Commissioners Court of Webb County and the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, entered into a contract for an archaeological assessment of the McPherson Road Extension Project, Laredo, Texas. The object of this survey was to locate, record and evaluate archaeological or historical resources that might be present within the proposed right-of-way.
As a result of the survey, three archaeological sites (41 WB 64, 41 WB 65 and 41 WB 66) were located within the right-of-way, and it was determined that these sites would be affected by road construction. Sites 41 WB 64 and 41 WB 65 were recommended for limited testing to evaluate their potential. Site 41 WB 66 was considered to be of little archaeological significance

We identified innovative social policies available in the international arena around parental leave, child-care, and time that could promote work-family reconciliation, more continuous employment and better quality jobs among low-waged women in England. Association between urinary sodium, creatinine, albumin, and long term survival in chronic kidney disease
Dietary sodium intake is associated with hypertension and cardiovascular risk in the general population. In patients with chronic kidney disease, sodium intake has been associated with progressive renal disease, but not independently of proteinuria. We studied the relationship between urinary sodium excretion and urinary sodium:creatinine ratio and mortality or requirement for renal replacement therapy in chronic kidney disease. Adults attending a renal clinic who had at least one 24-hour urinary sodium measurement were identified. 24-hour urinary sodium measures were collected and urinary sodium:creatinine ratio calculated. Time to renal replacement therapy or death was recorded. 423 patients were identified with mean estimated glomerular filtration rate of 48ml/min/1.73m<sup>2</sup>. 90 patients required renal replacement therapy and 102 patients died. Mean slope decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate was -2.8ml/min/1.73m<sup>2</sup>/year. Median follow-up was 8.5 years. Patients who died or required renal replacement therapy had significantly higher urinary sodium excretion and urinary sodium:creatinine but the association with these parameters and poor outcome was not independent of renal function, age and albuminuria. When stratified by albuminuria, urinary sodium:creatinine was a significant cumulative additional risk for mortality, even in patients with low level albuminuria. There was no association between low urinary sodium and risk, as observed in some studies. This study demonstrates an association between urinary sodium excretion and mortality in chronic kidney disease, with a cumulative relationship between sodium excretion, albuminuria and reduced survival. These data support reducing dietary sodium intake in chronic kidney disease but further study is required to determine the target sodium intake
Deterministic annealing, constrained clustering, and optimization
In previous work the authors (Phys. Rev. Let., vol.65, p.945-8, 1990) proposed the concept of deterministic annealing for the problem of clustering and vector quantization. This approach is summarized. The authors extend the clustering method to the constraint clustering method. Adding constraints to the deterministic annealing mechanism expands the variety of optimization problems which can be solved by this method. A brief presentation of the clustering approach is given. Two examples to which the constraint clustering approach can be applied are included
