Join the LAII and University Libraries for a presentation with Dr. Vanessa Fonseca, a Richard E. Greenleaf Visiting Library Scholar, who will discuss her current research on “Following the Manito Trail.” This is an interdisciplinary ethnographic project that documents Hispanic New Mexican (Manito) migration from New Mexico to different parts of the United States during the last century. Looking at Interstates I-25 and I-80 as major migration corridors for Manito families, Fonseca focuses on the driving factors for Manito migration to Wyoming and the exploration of notions of querencia, or how one establishes as sense of self and community through place. Fonseca is an Assistant Professor of Latina/o Studies and English at the University of Wyoming. She teaches courses in Chicano Literature, Transnational Literature of the Americas, and Non-Western Women Writers. Her research focuses on contemporary manifestations of colonial relationships in Chicano literary and cultural production, looking specifically at the effects of multiple layers of colonial relationships from the Spanish colonial period to the present. She currently is working on a co-edited book project which examines the international presence of Chicano literature. The Greenleaf Visiting Library Scholar travel grant is funded by a generous gift to the Latin American and Iberian Institute from Dr. Richard E. Dissertação para obtenção do grau de Mestre no Instituto Universitário Egas MonizIntroduction: Approximately 1.4 million people in the UK have survived a Myocardial Infarction (MI). When discharged, patients leave with a secondary prevention therapy. However, time to educate patients and adjust medication to an optimal treatment is limited. eHealth has grown exponentially being seen as a means to create proximity between professionals and patients. It is important to assess the feasibility of an app in order to be a valid replacement for face-to-face consultations. Objective: This project’s ultimate aim is to develop a virtual clinic to contribute to efficient delivery of healthcare and to promote proximity between healthcare professionals and patients. As an intermediate step, the current project aims to explore the feasibility of implementing such technology. The specific objective is to assess people’s opinion on the utility and the acceptability of a virtual clinic as a means to use technology to improve healthcare provision. Methods: A paper and pencil self-report questionnaire was developed to assess barriers and enablers of follow-up using virtual clinics, after MI. The questionnaire comprised sociodemographic data, a Health Literacy assessment tool and statements to reflect patients’ views and experiences on the use of smartphones and applications. Data was collected and subsequently analyzed. Analysis was processed using SPSS 25 and focused on questionnaire validation, univariate and bivariate statistics. Results: A total of 50 patients participated, the mean age was 61 ± 14, 76% were male and 12% were female, 42% were from East London and 48% were white and 68% have a high school degree or less. The majority of respondents (n=50; 70%) consider they have skills to use a smartphone, 42% agree the app may be a substitute to face to face consultations, 62% would like to have an app to monitor their condition and 74% agree that having access to a healthcare professional through an app would have a great impact in their health. Younger patients were more prompt to use apps (p< 0.001). Conclusion: Data gathered showed potential of having a virtual clinical app as a secondary prevention follow-up. However, further studies must be developed to support the use of Virtual Clinic apps for future replacement of follow-up face-to-face consultations for secondary prevention therapy.

The present work describes the antioxidant and cytotoxic properties of the ethanolic extracts of the leaves and stems of Mimosa verrucosa Beth. (Fabaceae) found in Northeast Brazil. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using the stable radical sequestration essay of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), demonstrating that the leaves had the highest antioxidant activity (IC50= 372.7 ± 0.3 μg.mL-1) and the cytotoxic activity was obtained by evaluating the mortality of Brine shrimp larvae, revealing the highest cytotoxic potential of the roots (DL50 = 145.5 ± 21.5 μg.mL-1). The analysis of the chromatograms obtained in HPLC-DAD and the thin layer chromatography plates with specific reagents indicated the presence of steroids, flavonoids, saponins and tannins in the different extracts, to which the antioxidant and cytotoxic activities were attributed. Worldwide anthropogenic activities result in the production and release of potentially damaging toxic pollutants into ecosystems, thereby jeopardizing their health and continuity. Research studies and biomonitoring programs attend to this emerging problematic by applying and developing statistically relevant indexes that integrate complex biomarker response data to provide a holistic approach, reflecting toxically induced alterations at the organism or population level. Ultimately, indexes allow simple result communications, enhancing policy makers understanding, and contributing to better resource and environmental managing policies. In this study three indexes, the integrated biomarker response index (IBR), the bioeffects assessment index (BAI) and principal components analysis (PCA), were evaluated for their sensitivity in revealing toxically induced stress patterns in cells of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum under contaminant exposure. The set of biomarkers selected for index construction comprised the anti-oxidant enzymes APX, CAT and SOD, and the lipid peroxidation marker TBARS. Several significant correlations with the applied concentration gradients were noticed for all indexes, although IBR excelled for its reliability in delivering statistically significant dose-response patterns for four out of the five tested compounds.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
