ICT in higher education in Portugal. Call computer assisted language learning

    Get PDF
The Impact of Information and Communications Technologies on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and on the Role of Teachers of Foreign Languages (2002: 5): "The use and employment of ICT in FLT and FLL is far from satisfactory, as ICT resources are traditionally reserved for '(computer) science' subjects, and rarely assigned to art subjects. A general lack of appropriate training of language teachers in meaningful uses of ICT tends to strengthen this trend". ABSTRACT: This paper proposes to study the behaviour of sea breeze in three locations at the western Portuguese coast, using a simulation with the WRF numerical model. Two days of August 2009 were selected to proceed with the simulation. With the results obtained by the simulation fields of temperature, humidity and wind were analyzed in order to compare the behaviour in the three previously selected locations. It was possible to observe the increase of relative humidity and a temperature decrease, a direct result of crossing the sea breeze, as well as increasing the height of the planetary boundary layer. There was also a convergence zone, indicating the existence of the breeze front. It was concluded that the sea breeze has different behaviours depending on the conditions found at each site, and the factor studied in this work which mostly influences this behaviour is the topography

Profitability and liability of size : evidence of Portugal

This thesis provides a comprehensive study on the effects of size on profitability for new venture firms, covering a period of 8 years, between 2010 and 2018. Overall, the results obtained indicate that size has a positive impact on the profitability of new venture firms. In particular, increases in the number of employees will cause a positive effect on the return on assets, in all the three estimated models, thus suggesting the existence of the liability of smallness in the new firms. Furthermore, this study accounts for both linear and non-linear effects, as well as for the inclusion of age as a moderator. Additionally, this study confirms the robustness of the results using different size and profitability measures.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

New decision support tools for forest tactical and operational planning

Doutoramento em Engenharia Florestal e dos Recursos Florestais - Instituto Superior de AgronomiaThe economic importance of the forest resources and the Portuguese forest-based industries motivated several studies over the last 15 years, particularly on strategic forest planning. This thesis focuses on the forest planning processes at tactical and operational level (FTOP). These problems relate to harvesting, transportation, storing, and delivering the forest products to the mills. Innovative Operation Research methods and Decision Support Systems (DSS) were developed to address some of these problems that are prevalent in Portugal. Specifically, Study I integrates harvest scheduling, pulpwood assortment, and assignment decisions at tactical level. The solution method was based in problem decomposition, combining heuristics and mathematical programming algorithms. Study II presents a solution approach based on Revenue Management principles for the reception of Raw Materials. This operational problem avoids truck congestion during the operation of pulpwood delivery. Study III uses Enterprise Architecture to design a DSS for integrating the operations performed over the pulpwood supply chain. Study IV tests this approach on a toolbox that handled the complexity of the interactions among the agents engaged on forest planning at regional level. Study V proposes an innovative technological framework that combines forest planning with forest operations' control

The promotion of self-care in the elderly, psychomotor reality

Abstract: Along the aging occur several changes that influence the reduction in functionality. As a result of this process, becomes the loss of autonomy in the elderly. The ability to self-care is aimed at maintaining life and well-being, and the individual carries it around himself and the world that surrounds him. This article aims to address the way in which psychomotricity is related to the promotion of self-care taking into account the importance of self-care in the elderly and the caregiver

Objective to describe strategies used by health professionals on the implementation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for the prevention of urinary infection related to catheterism. Method systematic review on literature based on data from CINAHL(r), Nursing & Allied Health Collection, Cochrane Plus Collection, MedicLatina, MEDLINE(r), Academic Search Complete, ACS - American Chemical Society, Health Reference Center Academic, Nursing Reference Center, ScienceDirect Journals and Wiley Online Library. A sample of 13 articles was selected. Results studies have highlighted the decrease of urinary tract infection related to catheterism through reminder systems to decrease of people submitted to urinary catheterism, audits about nursing professionals practice and bundles expansion. Conclusion the present review systemizes the knowledge of used strategies by health professionals on introduction to international recommendations, describing a rate decrease of such infection in clinical practice.
