    Depressione, farmaci antidepressivi, ed esiti funzionali nelle gestanti

    Obiettivo: Descrivere i quadri perinatali dell’uso di antidepressivi e il loro rapporto con la depressione in gravidanza. Metodi: Un totale di 276 donne ad alto rischio ha compilato un’intervista clinica strutturata per valutare l’impiego di farmaci antidepressivi. Risultati: Delle donne intervistate, il 13% (n = 36) ha riferito l’uso corrente di farmaci antidepressivi. Tra le donne che assumono antidepressivi e quelle che non ne fanno uso, non sono state rilevate differenze per quanto riguarda i risultati sulla depressione e sulla salute in generale. Conclusioni: Il monitoraggio dei sintomi depressivi nelle donne che seguono una terapia farmacologica in gravidanza è importante per ottimizzare il loro trattamento

    Treatment guidelines for depression in pregnancy

    Depression is a ubiquitous disorder in childbearing women with up to 10% of women experiencing depression in pregnancy. Postpartum depression occurs in 12–16% of pregnancies making it a common complication. Moreover, these illnesses are frequently underdiagnosed in obstetric settings, and a recent report of the Surgeon General’s Office confirms that many women do not access services, or receive treatment of inadequate intensity or duration. This paper provides current treatment guidelines to aid in appropriate diagnosis and treatment of depression in pregnancy and postpartum.     Axion Dissipation Through the Mixing of Goldstone Bosons

    By coupling axions strongly to a hidden sector, the energy density in coherent axions may be converted to radiative degrees of freedom, alleviating the ``axion energy crisis''. The strong coupling is achieved by mixing the axion and some other Goldstone boson through their kinetic energy terms, in a manner reminiscent of paraphoton models. Even with the strong coupling it proves difficult to relax the axion energy density through particle absorption, due to the derivative nature of Goldstone boson couplings and the effect of back reactions on the evolution of the axion number density. However, the distribution of other particle species in the hidden sector will be driven from equilibrium by the axion field oscillations. Restoration of thermal equilibrium results in energy being transferred from the axions to massless particles, where it can redshift harmlessly without causing any cosmological problems.Comment: 20 pages, Latex, (3 uuencoded compressed tarred postscript figures attached

    Is the Sun Embedded in a Typical Interstellar Cloud?

    The physical properties and kinematics of the partially ionized interstellar material near the Sun are typical of warm diffuse clouds in the solar vicinity. The interstellar magnetic field at the heliosphere and the kinematics of nearby clouds are naturally explained in terms of the S1 superbubble shell. The interstellar radiation field at the Sun appears to be harder than the field ionizing ambient diffuse gas, which may be a consequence of the low opacity of the tiny cloud surrounding the heliosphere.     Re-emergence and geographic expansion of leishmaniasis is accelerating efforts to develop a safe and effective Leshmania vaccine. Vaccines using Leishmania recombinant antigens, such as LiHyp1, which is mostly present in the amastigote parasite form, are being developed as a next generation to crude killed parasite-based vaccines. The main objective of this work was to develop a LiHyp1-based vaccine and determine if it can induce protective immunity in BALB/c mice when administered using a dissolvable microneedle (DMN) patch by the skin route. The LiHyp1 antigen was incorporated into cationic liposomes (CL), with or without the TLR9 agonist, CpG. The LiHyp1-liposomal vaccines were characterized with respect to size, protein encapsulation rates and retention of their physical characteristics after incorporation into the DMN patch. DMN mechanical strength and skin penetration ability were tested. A vaccine composed of LiHyp1, CpG and liposomes and subcutaneously injected or a vaccine containing antigen and CpG in DMN patches, without liposomes, induced high antibody responses and significant levels of protection against L. donovani parasite infection. This study progresses the development of an efficacious leishmania vaccine by detailing promising vaccine formulations and skin delivery technologies and it addresses protective efficacy of a liposome-based dissolvable microneedle patch vaccine system

    Site-Selective Passivation of Defects in NiO Solar Photocathodes by Targeted Atomic Deposition

    For nanomaterials, surface chemistry can dictate fundamental material properties, including charge-carrier lifetimes, doping levels, and electrical mobilities. In devices, surface defects are usually the key limiting factor for performance, particularly in solar-energy applications. Here, we develop a strategy to uniformly and selectively passivate defect sites in semiconductor nanomaterials using a vapor-phase process termed targeted atomic deposition (TAD). Because defects often consist of atomic vacancies and dangling bonds with heightened reactivity, we observe-for the widely used p-type cathode nickel oxide-that a volatile precursor such as trimethylaluminum can undergo a kinetically limited selective reaction with these sites. The TAD process eliminates all measurable defects in NiO, leading to a nearly 3-fold improvement in the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells. Our results suggest that TAD could be implemented with a range of vapor-phase precursors and be developed into a general strategy to passivate defects in zero-, one-, and two-dimensional nanomaterials

    Materiality, health informatics and the limits of knowledge production

    © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2014 Contemporary societies increasingly rely on complex and sophisticated information systems for a wide variety of tasks and, ultimately, knowledge about the world in which we live. Those systems are central to the kinds of problems our systems and sub-systems face such as health and medical diagnosis, treatment and care. While health information systems represent a continuously expanding field of knowledge production, we suggest that they carry forward significant limitations, particularly in their claims to represent human beings as living creatures and in their capacity to critically reflect on the social, cultural and political origins of many forms of data ‘representation’. In this paper we take these ideas and explore them in relation to the way we see healthcare information systems currently functioning. We offer some examples from our own experience in healthcare settings to illustrate how unexamined ideas about individuals, groups and social categories of people continue to influence health information systems and practices as well as their resulting knowledge production. We suggest some ideas for better understanding how and why this still happens and look to a future where the reflexivity of healthcare administration, the healthcare professions and the information sciences might better engage with these issues. There is no denying the role of health informatics in contemporary healthcare systems but their capacity to represent people in those datascapes has a long way to go if the categories they use to describe and analyse human beings are to produce meaningful knowledge about the social world and not simply to replicate past ideologies of those same categories

    Shell evolution approaching the N=20 island of inversion : Structure of 26Na

    The levels in 26Na with single particle character have been observed for the first time using the d(25Na, pγ) reaction at 5 MeV/nucleon. The measured excitation energies and the deduced spectroscopic factors are in good overall agreement with (0+1)hω shell model calculations performed in a complete spsdfp basis and incorporating a reduction in the N=20 gap. Notably, the 1p3/2 neutron configuration was found to play an enhanced role in the structure of the low-lying negative parity states in 26Na, compared to the isotone 28Al. Thus, the lowering of the 1p3/2 orbital relative to the 0f7/2 occurring in the neighbouring Z=10 and 12 nuclei - 25,27Ne and 27,29Mg - is seen also to occur at Z=11 and further strengthens the constraints on the modelling of the transition into the island of inversion
