    Microctonus aethiopoides, a braconid parasite of adult alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica, is now established in southeastern Minnesota. Releases were made near Caledonia in Houston County, in 1978 and 1979, and near Rosemount in Dakota County, in 1979 and 1980. M. aethiopoides was recovered in Houston County in 1979, a new state record, and since has expanded its range more than 40 km from the release site. Establishment in Dakota County was unexpected because of low host densities, but parasites were recovered there in 1983. Other workers have recovered M. aethiopoides in Olmstead County

    An MF α1-SUC2 (α-factor-invertase) gene fusion for study of protein localization and gene expression in yeast

    The peptide mating pheromone alpha-factor and the hydrolytic enzyme invertase (beta-D-fructofuranoside fructohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.26) are processed from larger precursor proteins during their secretion from yeast cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). An in-frame fusion of the structural genes for these two proteins was constructed by connecting the 5'-flanking region and prepro-leader portion of the coding sequence of the alpha-factor gene (MF alpha 1) to a large fragment of the invertase gene (SUC2) lacking its 5'-flanking region and the coding information for the first four amino acids of its signal sequence. Sites that have been implicated in normal proteolytic processing of the alpha-factor precursor have been retained in this construction. The chimeric gene directs synthesis of a high level of active invertase that is secreted efficiently into the periplasmic space, permitting cell growth on sucrose-containing media. This extracellular invertase appears to contain no prepro-alpha-factor sequences. The initial intracellular product is, however, a hybrid protein that can be detected either by treatment of the cells with the drug tunicamycin or by blockage of secretion in a temperature-conditional secretion-defective mutant (sec18). Therefore, prior to its efficient proteolytic removal, the alpha-factor portion of the hybrid protein apparently provides the necessary information for efficient export of the substantially larger protein invertase. Similar to MF alpha 1, the MF alpha 1-SUC2 fusion is expressed in alpha haploids at levels 65-75 times higher than in a haploids or in a/alpha diploids; also, high-level expression is eliminated in mat alpha 1 mutants but not in mat alpha 2 mutants. Unlike expression of SUC2, expression of the fusion is not affected by glucose concentration. Hence, the 5'-flanking region present in the fusion (about 950 base pairs) is sufficient to confer alpha cell-specific expression to the hybrid gene

    Prevalence, associated factors and outcomes of pressure injuries in adult intensive care unit patients: the DecubICUs study

Epidemiologic data is however unavailable. We aimed to provide an international picture of the extent of pressure injuries and factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries in adult ICU patients. Methods: International 1-day point-prevalence study; follow-up for outcome assessment until hospital discharge (maximum 12 weeks). Factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injury and hospital mortality were assessed by generalised linear mixed-effects regression analysis. Results: Data from 13,254 patients in 1117 ICUs (90 countries) revealed 6747 pressure injuries; 3997 (59.2%) were ICU-acquired. Overall prevalence was 26.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.9–27.3). ICU-acquired prevalence was 16.2% (95% CI 15.6–16.8). Sacrum (37%) and heels (19.5%) were most affected. Factors independently associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries were older age, male sex, being underweight, emergency surgery, higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, Braden score 3 days, comorbidities (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, immunodeficiency), organ support (renal replacement, mechanical ventilation on ICU admission), and being in a low or lower-middle income-economy. Gradually increasing associations with mortality were identified for increasing severity of pressure injury: stage I (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.8), stage II (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.4–1.9), and stage III or worse (OR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3–3.3). Conclusion: Pressure injuries are common in adult ICU patients. ICU-acquired pressure injuries are associated with mainly intrinsic factors and mortality. Optimal care standards, increased awareness, appropriate resource allocation, and further research into optimal prevention are pivotal to tackle this important patient safety threat

    La place de l'apprentissage de la langue anglaise dans les brevets de technicien supérieur (BTS) industriels est rendue problématique par le peu d'intérêt que lui portent certains étudiants ou les difficultés rencontrées par d'autres. Ceux-ci ayant fait le choix de cette formation professionnalisante en deux ans, ne sont pas nécessairement sensibles à l'utilité de cet apprentissage à ce niveau. L'objectif triple de l'action présentée dans cette fiche est de construire et/ou renforcer des connaissances et compétences en anglais, d’assurer la motivation, la confiance et l'implication des apprenants et finalement, d’introduire la cohérence entre l'apprentissage de la langue vivante et les matières de spécialité. Le projet décrit ici a mis les apprenants en situation active dans un projet regroupant les disciplines anglais et techniques esthétiques en visant la production de supports vidéo de différents types tout au long de l'année.Learning a foreign language in a specialized Higher National Degree is often questioned by students who do not feel much interested in the matter or because they have had a poor experience with it. The students who have chosen a two-year higher vocational training do not often consider this learning useful. The triple objective of this teaching note is to build and/or strengthen the students’ knowledge and skills in English as a Foreign Language (EFL), to comfort learners' motivation, self-confidence and involvement and finally, to bring coherence back in the learning of EFL and the vocational subjects. In the project described here, learners were required to become actors of a year-long project combining English and Cosmetology in order to create various types of films
