Exploring the Design of Pay-Per-Use Objects in the Construction Domain
Equipment used in the construction domain is often hired in order to reduce cost and maintenance overhead. The cost of hire is dependent on the time period involved and does not take into account the actual use equipment has received. This paper presents our initial investigation into how physical objects augmented with sensing and communication technologies can measure use in order to enable new pay-per-use payment models for equipment hire. We also explore user interaction with pay-per-use objects via mobile devices. The user interactions that take place within our prototype scenario range from simple information access to transactions involving multiple users. This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a prototype pay-per-use system motivated by a real world equipment hire scenario. We also provide insights into the various challenges introduced by supporting a pay-per-use model, including data storage and data security in addition to user interaction issues
The Social Validity of Telepractice among Spanish-Speaking Caregivers of English Learners: An Examination of Moderators
The purpose of the present paper was to examine the social validity of telepractice as a service delivery model for Spanish-speaking families of English learners. Quantitative survey methodology was employed to examine 79 caregivers’ opinions regarding telepractice and to obtain background information about participants’ home environments. Findings revealed that approximately 46% of the participant sample reported being interested in their children receiving services via telepractice. Caregivers reported limited familiarity with telepractice as an option, but were likely to express interest if their child had an identified speech or language disorder or if they were interested in increased access to Spanish language support for their children. In conclusion, although telepractice is not universally accepted among Spanish-speaking families, it appears to be a promising service delivery model. It is recommended that service providers offer thorough information and address common myths when considering telepractice as a service delivery model for families.Keywords: Bilingualism, Minority language, Telehealth, Telepractic
Micro RNA Expression after Ingestion of Fucoidan; A Clinical Study
Fucoidans are a class of fucose‐rich sulfated polysaccharides derived from brownmacroalgae that exert a range of biological activities in vitro and in vivo. To generate an unbiasedassessment of pathways and processes affected by fucoidan, a placebo‐controlled double‐blind pilotstudy was performed in healthy volunteers. Blood samples were taken immediately before and 24h after ingestion of a single dose of 1 g of Undaria pinnatifida fucoidan (UPF) or placebo. Levels ofisolated miRNAs were analyzed using Taqman Open Array Human MicroRNA panels. Out of 754miRNAs screened, UPF affected a total of 53 miRNAs. Pathway analysis using the TALOS dataanalysis tool predicted 29 different pathways and processes that were largely grouped into cellsurface receptor signaling, cancer‐related pathways, the majority of which were previouslyassociated with fucoidans. However, this analysis also identified nine pathways and processes thathave not been associated with fucoidans before. Overall, this study illustrates that even a single doseof fucoidans has the potential to affect the expression of genes related to fundamental cellularprocesses. Moreover, it confirms previous data that fucoidans influence immunity, cancer cells,inflammation, and neurological function

Rapid Automated Naming Performance of Young Spanish-English Speaking Children
The aim of this preliminary study was to examine the feasibility of a rapid automatic naming (RAN) task for young Spanish–English speaking dual language learners (DLLs) and to examine the relationship between children’s performance on RAN and other standardized language and literacy assessments. A total of 275 Spanish–English speaking children in kindergarten and first grade attempted a RAN task and completed assessments of language and early literacy. Correlational analyses and quantile regression was conducted to examine relationships. Overall the RAN task was feasible for 74% (n = 203) of the DLLs; however, 42% of participants in kindergarten were unable to complete the task. There was a moderate positive correlation between RAN performance and standard scores in receptive vocabulary and letter identification, a small positive correlation with non-verbal intelligence, and no significant relationship with phonological awareness. There was a differential relation between RAN and English sentence imitation. The results support further consideration of RAN as a feasible and useful measure for young Spanish–English speaking DLLs
