Isospin symmetry breaking in an algebraic pairing Sp(4) model
An exactly solvable sp(4) algebraic approach extends beyond the traditional
isospin conserving nuclear interaction to bring forward effects of isospin
symmetry breaking and isospin mixing resulting from a two-body nuclear
interaction that includes proton-neutron (pn) and like-particle isovector
pairing correlations plus significant isoscalar pn interactions. The model
yields an estimate for the extent to which isobaric analog 0+ states in light
and medium mass nuclei may mix with one another and reveals possible, but still
extremely weak, non-analog beta-decay transitions.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
Coupling transport and biodegradation of VOCs in surface and subsurface soils.
Volatile organic chemicals present at Superfund sites preferentially partition into the soil gas and may be available for microbial degradation. A simple mass transfer model for biodegradation for volatile substrates has been developed for the aerobic decomposition of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons. The mass transfer analysis calculates diffusive fluxes from soil gas through water and membrane films and into the cell. This model predicts an extreme sensitivity of potential biodegradation rates to the air-water partition coefficients of the compounds. Aromatic hydrocarbons are removed rapidly while the aliphatic hydrocarbons are much slower by orders of magnitude. Furthermore, oxygen transfer is likely to limit aromatic hydrocarbon degradation rates. The model presents results that cast doubt on the practicality of using methane or propane for the co-metabolic destruction of trichloroethylene in a gas phase bioreactor. Toluene as a primary substrate has better mass transfer characteristics to achieve more efficient trichloroethylene degradation. Hence, in sites where these contaminants coexist, bioremediation could be improved
Ground state magnetic dipole moment of 35K
The ground state magnetic moment of 35K has been measured using the technique
of nuclear magnetic resonance on beta-emitting nuclei. The short-lived 35K
nuclei were produced following the reaction of a 36Ar primary beam of energy
150 MeV/nucleon incident on a Be target. The spin polarization of the 35K
nuclei produced at 2 degrees relative to the normal primary beam axis was
confirmed. Together with the mirror nucleus 35S, the measurement represents the
heaviest T = 3/2 mirror pair for which the spin expectation value has been
obtained. A linear behavior of gp vs. gn has been demonstrated for the T = 3/2
known mirror moments and the slope and intercept are consistent with the
previous analysis of T = 1/2 mirror pairs.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
The beta-decay of 22Al
In an experiment performed at the LISE3 facility of GANIL, we studied the
decay of 22Al produced by the fragmentation of a 36Ar primary beam. A
beta-decay half-life of 91.1 +- 0.5 ms was measured. The beta-delayed one- and
two-proton emission as well as beta-alpha and beta-delayed gamma decays were
measured and allowed us to establish a partial decay scheme for this nucleus.
New levels were determined in the daughter nucleus 22Mg. The comparison with
model calculations strongly favours a spin-parity of 4+ for the ground state of
22Al
Experimental evidence of a natural parity state in Mg and its impact to the production of neutrons for the s process
We have studied natural parity states in Mg via the
Ne(Li,d)Mg reaction. Our method significantly improves the
energy resolution of previous experiments and, as a result, we report the
observation of a natural parity state in Mg. Possible spin-parity
assignments are suggested on the basis of published -ray decay
experiments. The stellar rate of the Ne(,)Mg
reaction is reduced and may give rise to an increase in the production of
s-process neutrons via the Ne(,n)Mg reaction.Comment: Published in PR
Solar Neutrinos from CNO Electron Capture
The neutrino flux from the sun is predicted to have a CNO-cycle contribution
as well as the known pp-chain component. Previously, only the fluxes from beta+
decays of 13N, 15O, and 17F have been calculated in detail. Another neutrino
component that has not been widely considered is electron capture on these
nuclei. We calculate the number of interactions in several solar neutrino
detectors due to neutrinos from electron capture on 13N, 15O, and 17F, within
the context of the Standard Solar Model. We also discuss possible non-standard
models where the CNO flux is increased.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Phys. Rev. C; v2 has minor changes
including integration over solar volume and addition of missing reference to
previous continuum electron capture calculation; v3 has minor changes
including addition of references and the correction of a small (about 1%)
numerical error in the table
Inclusive Quasi-Elastic Charged-Current Neutrino-Nucleus Reactions
The Quasi-Elastic (QE) contribution of the nuclear inclusive electron
scattering model developed in Nucl. Phys. A627 (1997) 543 is extended to the
study of electroweak Charged Current (CC) induced nuclear reactions, at
intermediate energies of interest for future neutrino oscillation experiments.
The model accounts for, among other nuclear effects, long range nuclear (RPA)
correlations, Final State Interaction (FSI) and Coulomb corrections.
Predictions for the inclusive muon capture in C and the reaction
C near threshold are also given. RPA correlations are
shown to play a crucial role and their inclusion leads to one of the best
existing simultaneous description of both processes, with accuracies of the
order of 10-15% per cent for the muon capture rate and even better for the LSND
measurement.Comment: 31 pages and 14 figures, accepted for publication as a regular

Nuclear level densities and gamma-ray strength functions in 44,45Sc
The scandium isotopes 44,45Sc have been studied with the 45Sc(3He,alpha
gamma)44Sc and 45Sc(3He,3He' gamma)45Sc reactions, respectively. The nuclear
level densities and gamma-ray strength functions have been extracted using the
Oslo method. The experimental level densities are compared to calculated level
densities obtained from a microscopic model based on BCS quasiparticles within
the Nilsson level scheme. This model also gives information about the parity
distribution and the number of broken Cooper pairs as a function of excitation
energy. The experimental gamma-ray strength functions are compared to
theoretical models of the E1, M1, and E2 strength, and to data from (gamma,n)
and (gamma,p) experiments. The strength functions show an enhancement at low
gamma energies that cannot be explained by the present, standard models.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures. Published versio
Phenomenological description of the states and in some even-even nuclei
A sixth-order quadrupole boson Hamiltonian is used to describe the states
and identified in several nuclei by various types of experiments.
Two alternative descriptions of energy levels are proposed. One corresponds to
a semi-classical approach of the model Hamiltonian while the other one provides
the exact eigenvalues. Both procedures yield close formulas for energies. The
first procedure involves four parameters, while the second involves a compact
formula with five parameters. In each case the parameters are fixed by a
least-square fit procedure. Applications are performed for eight even-even
nuclei.
Both methods yield results which are in a surprisingly good agreement with
the experimental data. We give also our predicted reduced transition
probabilities within the two approaches, although the corresponding
experimental data are not yet available.Comment: 27pages, 18 figure
Level densities and -ray strength functions in Yb
Level densities and radiative strength functions in Yb and Yb
nuclei have been measured using the
Yb(He,He)Yb and
Yb(He,)Yb reactions. New data on Yb
are compared to a previous measurement for Yb from the
Yb(He,)Yb reaction. Systematics of level
densities and radiative strength functions in Yb are
established. The entropy excess in Yb relative to the even-even nuclei
Yb due to the unpaired neutron quasiparticle is found to be
approximately 2. Results for the radiative strength function from the two
reactions lead to consistent parameters characterizing the ``pygmy''
resonances. Pygmy resonances in the Yb populated by the
(He,) reaction appear to be split into two components for both of
which a complete set of resonance parameters are obtained.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
