    Formalizando algoritmos concorrentes

    Get PDF
This work presents a way to think concurrent. We use graphs algorithms, shortest path, to show since specification thru concurrent algorithms implementation. We want to show another way to teach concurrency, theory, properties, and concurrent algorithms implementation. There are many knowledge areas that need High Performance Computing (HPC), including concurrent programming, and others that benefit with it. And at same time, there aren’t many people that have knowledge to use HPC as a way to solve problems. In this work we present a relation between concurrent formal specification and practical application thru the basic properties of parallel programs.Eje: Programación concurrenteRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI

Materials of marine origin: a review on polymers and ceramics of biomedical interest

    Get PDF
Marine organisms are constituted by materials with a vast range of properties and characteristics that may justify their potential application within the biomedical field. Moreover, assuring the sustainable exploitation of natural marine resources, the valorisation of residues from marine origin, like those obtained from food processing, constitutes a highly interesting platform for development of novel biomaterials, with both economic and environmental benefits. In this perspective, an increasing number of different types of compounds are being isolated from aquatic organisms and transformed into profitable products for health applications, including controlled drug delivery and tissue engineering devices. This report reviews the work that is being developed on the isolation and characterisation of some polysaccharides, proteins, glycosaminoglycans and ceramics from marine raw materials. Emphasis is given to agar, alginates, carrageenans, chitin and chitosan, among other polysaccharides, collagen, glycosaminoglycans such as chondroitin sulphate, heparin and hyaluronic acid, calcium phosphorous compounds and biosilica. Finally, this report ends by reviewing the application of the previously mentioned materials on specific biomedical applications, in particular their participation on the development of controlled drug delivery systems and tissue engineering scaffolds.European Fund for Regional Development (EFRD)Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

Environmental impact monitoring of a minero-chemical complex in Catalão urban area of PTS, PM10 and PM2.5 by EDX characterization

Depending on its nature, particulate matter has very different size, composition and morphology. By the combination of these criteria it is possible to distinguish the emitting sources (primary or secondary). The shape and the dimension of the particles have also a direct interaction with the risk assessment for human health. The minero-chemical complex consists of phosphate fertilizer manufacturing, rock phosphate and niobium mining open pits and it is located northeast of the urban area of the city. Environmental issues associated with it include the following: fugitive emissions which are primarily associated with operational leaks from tubing, valves, connections, flanges, packings, open ended lines, floating roof storage tank and pump seals, gas conveyance systems, compressor seals, pressure relief valves, tanks or open its/containments, and loading and unloading operations of products. Furthermore the area of study is characterized by a predominantly northeast winds direction. The monitoring was performed weekly particulates samples were collected in two seasonal episodes at one representative places in the urban area of Catalao (a Brazilian city located in Goias state) in the period from August to November of 2014. Suspended particles were sampled on pure fiberglass filters by using a High Volume air sampler and were analyzed via an energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis system (EDX). The airborne particulate matter was characterized from a physico-chemical point of view to supply information on the particle composition and the compounds carried on their surfaces. The microanalysis enables identification of several groups of particles such as: soot, Si-rich, metal-rich and biological particules. These results may help in controlling and preventing fugitive emissions in atmospheric air.Depending on its nature, particulate matter has very different size, composition and morphology. By the combination of these criteria it is possible to distinguish the emitting sources (primary or secondary). Artifacts in brain magnetic resonance imaging due to metallic dental objects

    Get PDF
Objective: Artifacts caused by metallic objects, such as dental crowns, dental implants and metallic orthodontic appliances, are a common problem in head and neck MRI. The aim of this retrospective study was to identify the main metal dental objects that produce artifacts on brain MRIs.Study design: Imaged metallic artifacts and their sources were identifi ed. Artifact image plane was rated on a score of 0 or 1 (0 - distinguishable for diagnosis and 1 - not distinguishable for diagnosis). Results: Seventy-eight percent of the artifacts appearing in images were caused by orthodontic appliances, followed by dental titanium implants (18%) and metallic crowns (4%). Orthodontic appliances obtained the highest scores in all planes. Conclusions: We concluded that is diffi cult to avoid the effect of metallic artifacts in the maxillofacial regions on brain scan. Removing metallic parts of the orthodontic appliance should ensure diagnostically useful quality scans

    Functional nanostructured chitosan–siloxane hybrids

    Get PDF
New organic–inorganic hybrids were prepared by a sol–gel method from the biopolymer chitosan and a silane coupling agent, 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (ICPTES), in which covalent bridges, essentially composed of urea, bond the chitosan to the poly(siloxane) network. The structural characterization of the advanced chitosan–siloxane hybrids was performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and 29Si and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance. The presence of siloxane nanodomains was detected by small angle X-ray diffraction. The chitosan–siloxane hybrids are bifunctional materials with interesting photoluminescent features and bioactive behaviour. The photoluminescence spectra display an additional high-energy band with longer lifetime, relatively to the characteristic emission of pure chitosan. This band is associated with electron–hole recombinations arising from silicon-related defects at the surface of the siliceous nanodomains. The bioactive behaviour of these materials was also evaluated; the apatite formation was shown to depend on the amount and arrangement of silanol groups

Assessment of acute toxicity of the ethanolic extract of Lychnophora pinaster (Brazilian arnica)

    Get PDF
AbstractSpecies of the Lychnophora genus are plants native to Brazil, popularly known as “Brazilian arnica” and used in folk medicine as alcoholic and hydro-alcoholic preparations for the treatment of bruises, inflammation, pain, rheumatism and insect bites. The present study aimed to evaluate the safety of the use of Lychnophora pinaster Mart., Asteraceae. Acute toxicity of the crude ethanolic extract was evaluated by administration of the extract by oral route to male and female Swiss mice. A single extract dose of 125, 250 or 500mg/kg was administered and the effects on spontaneous locomotor activity, exploratory behavior, muscle strength, body weight, food and water consumption, relative organ weight, histology, as well as hematological and biochemical parameters were evaluated. The three doses administered to the animals did not cause muscle tone alterations, but doses of 250 and 500mg/kg induced a significant inhibition of the spontaneous locomotor activity and exploratory behavior of the animals in open-field test. There was no alteration to hematological parameters and consumption of water and food, body weight variation and organs relative weight. Changes were observed in AST and ALT during assessment of biochemical parameters. The histopathological evaluation showed that the extract provoked cellular alterations, such as vacuolar degeneration and inflammation in kidneys and liver at all doses. Liver morphometric analyses of male and female mice showed that the extract did not have dose-dependent effects. Although females showed a significant increase in inflammatory cells, the effect was not dose-dependent

Performance of the LHCb muon system

The performance of the LHCb Muon system and its stability across the full 2010 data taking with LHC running at ps = 7 TeV energy is studied. The optimization of the detector setting and the time calibration performed with the first collisions delivered by LHC is described. Particle rates, measured for the wide range of luminosities and beam operation conditions experienced during the run, are compared with the values expected from simulation. The space and time alignment of the detectors, chamber efficiency, time resolution and cluster size are evaluated. The detector performance is found to be as expected from specifications or better. Notably the overall efficiency is well above the design requirementsComment: JINST_015P_1112 201
