An Internet of Things (IoT) Ecosystem for Detection and Removal of Radon Gas
The region that served as the basis for this work is characterized by the abundance of different
types of granite. In some places, the predominance of certain uraniferous minerals, the existence
of faults and mines may even be responsible for the existence of very high levels of natural radioactivity, especially with regard to radon. The main motivation for studying the effects of population
exposure to radon is based on the fact that this gas, radioactive, odorless, colorless and tasteless,
has been recognized since 1988 by the World Health Organization as the 2nd leading cause of death
from lung cancer for the general population, after tobacco. Approximately 80 % of the background
radiation to which populations are exposed daily comes from natural sources, which can include
radioactive materials of natural origin, NORM, present in the earth’s crust, in food, in some drinks
and, including certain building materials.
In December 2018, a new legislation was approved in Portugal, DL no 108/2018, transposed from
European Directive 59/2013 / Euratom, which establishes uniform basic safety standards for the
protection of the health of people subject to exposure professional, public and medical professionals
against the dangers arising from ionizing radiation. The radon isotope, 222Rn, which results from
radio disintegration, 226Ra, and one of the uranium decay products, 238U, is the main radionuclide
of radiological interest in terms human health. This radioactive gas is spontaneously released
from some rocks and, being slightly denser than air, it tends to accumulate in ground areas of
closed spaces and is responsible for the majority of the radiation dose received by the population.
Some traditional solutions have been applied in order to solve the problem, however, after the
detection of the radon they do not use the data collected in order to combat and prevent the gas
from accumulating in the interior spaces. In Portugal it is a problem that has not been given
due attention. Taking into account the possible harmful effects of radon on the population, the
main motivation of this work was the development of an IoT (Internet of Things) system with
the objective of detecting, mitigating and predicting the levels of radon gas inside homes. Based
on this assumption, it will be possible to create a healthier environment that will reduce health
risks in closed environments. To achieve this goal, an IoT system was developed, consisting of a
radon sensor and an automated switch, which allows the fans installed and / or switched off to be
installed in the residence, as well as predicting and making decisions in the face of a potentially
dangerous situation based on the records provided by the sensors. This system also includes a
web application that allows the user to consult the statistical data related to the average radon
concentration. On the other hand, through the web application, it is possible to not only activate
the fans manually, but also to edit the limit at which the fans are activated. This system was
tested in a real context and, therefore, it is possible to compare two radon gas mitigation methods
and identify which would be the most effective. Once the method to be used was determined
and after stabilizing the data obtained by the sensor, the results obtained by the system were
analyzed, which allowed us to conclude that the system reduced considerably the levels of radon in
the house. On average, there was a 93% reduction in the concentration of radon gas. This result
demonstrates that the implementation of the system was successful and allows us to conclude that
it can be applied on a larger scale.
A principal
Soil microbial biomass in organic farming system.
Agricultural production systems have to combine management practices in order to sustain soil's profitability and quality. Organic farming is gaining worldwide acceptance and has been expanding at an annual rate of 20% in the last decade, accounting for over 24 million hectares worldwide. Organic practices avoid applications of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, rely on organic inputs and recycling for nutrient supply, and emphasize cropping system design and biological processes for pest management, as defined by organic farming regulation in the world. In comparison with conventional farming, organic farming has potential benefits in improving food quality and safety. Plant production in organic farming mainly depends on nutrient release as a function of mineralization processes in soils. The build-up of a large and active soil microbial biomass is important pool of accessible nutrients, therefore, is an important priority in organic farming. In organic farming, there is positive effect of quantity and quality of inputs of organic residues on soil microbial biomass. In this way, the organic systems are extremely important for the increase of the soil fertility and the maintenance of the environmental sustainability

Destination image: Origins, Developments and Implications
Over the last few decades, tourism has become one of the main sectors of the global economy, not only because of its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of different countries, but also because of the employment it generates. Since 2009, however, the results of tourism have been severely affected by the economic and financial crisis and it is now essential to analyze the key elements of tourist consumer behavior. In this context, the image that a destination transmits to the market becomes one of the elements which influence tourists the most when choosing a tourist destination. The authors therefore aim to identify the main elements that characterize the image of a tourist destination, as well as their implications for the management of tourist destinations
Lost in Migration – Mirandese at a Crossroads
The linguistic rights of Mirandese were enshrined in Portugal in 1999, though its “discovery” dates back to the very end of the 19th century at the hands of Leite de Vasconcellos. For centuries, it was the first or only language spoken by people living in the northeast of Portugal, particularly the district of Miranda do Douro. As a minority language, it has always moved among three dimensions. On the one hand, the need to assert and
defend this language and have it acknowledged by the country, which proudly believe(d) in their monolingual
history. Unavoidably, this has ensued the action of translation, especially active from the mid of the 20th century onwards, with an emphasis on the translation of the Bible and Portuguese canonical literature, as well as other renowned literary forms (e.g. The Adventures of Asterix). Finally, the third axis lies in migration, either within Portugal or abroad. Between the 1950s and the 1960s, Mirandese people were forced to leave Miranda do Douro and villages in the outskirts in the thousands. They fled not only due to the deeply entrenched poverty, but also the almost complete absence of future prospects, enhanced by the fact that they were regarded as not speaking “good” Portuguese, but rather a “charra” language, and as ignorant backward people. This period coincided with the building of dams on the river Douro and the cultural and linguistic shock that stemmed from this forceful contact, which exacerbated their sense of not belonging and of social shame. Bearing all this in mind, we seek to approach the role that migration played not only in the assertion of Mirandese as a language in its own right, but also in the empowerment of new generations of Mirandese people, highly qualified and politically engaged in the defence of this minority language, some of whom were former migrants. Thus, we aim to depict Mirandese’s political situation before and after the endorsement of the Portuguese Law no. 7/99.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
On the function of the floccular complex of the vertebrate cerebellum: implications in paleoneuroanatomy
The cerebellum floccular complex lobes (FCLs) are housed in the FCL fossa of the periotic complex. There is experimental evidence indicating that the FCLs integrate visual and vestibular information, responsible for the vestibulo-ocular reflex, vestibulo-collic reflex, smooth pursuit and gaze holding. Thus, the behavior of extinct animals has been correlated with FCLs dimension in multiple paleoneuroanatomy studies.
Here I analyzed braincase endocasts of a representative sample of Mammalia (48 species) and Aves (59 species) rendered using tomography and image segmentation and tested statistical correlations between the floccular complex volume, ecological and behavioral traits to assess various previously formulated paleobiological speculations.
My results demonstrate: 1) there is no significant correlation between relative FCL volume and body mass; 2) there is no significant correlation between relative FCL and optic lobes size in birds; 3) average relative FCL size is larger in diurnal than in nocturnal birds but there is no statistically significant difference in mammals; 4) feeding strategies are related with different FCL size patterns in birds, but not in mammals; 5) locomotion type is not related with relative FCL size in mammals; 6) agility is not significantly correlated with FCL size in mammals.
I conclude that, despite the apparent relation between FCL size and ecology in birds, the cerebellum of tetrapods is a highly plastic structure and may be adapted to control different functions across different taxonomic levels. For example, the european mole (Talpa europaea) which is fossorial and practically blind, has a FCL fossae relative size larger than those of bats, which are highly maneuverable. Therefore, variation in FCL size may be better explained by a combination of multiple factors with relation to anatomical and phylogenetic evolutionary constraints
