The present study had as main objective the contribution of the graphical representations
analysis in the Statistics teaching and learning of the 10th grade students. For this objective
concretization, it was needed the establishment of the following investigation questions: (1) How
do teachers assume the graphical representations in the Statistics teaching on the 10th grade?
How are these representations assumed in the student’s school book? (2)Which are the
capabilities and acquirements of students in terms of the Statistics study through graphical
representations? What are the students’ difficulties when talking about interpretation of
information in a statistical graphic? (3) What are the students’ prospects about the teachinglearning
of the statistical contents through the graphical representations? (4) What were the
constraints felt by me in the statistical teaching on the 10th grade concerning the graphical
representations? For the answering of these questions there was the necessity to resort to several
methods of data collection: a diagnostic test, made before the pedagogical intervention, two
questionnaires (one directed to students and the other to school teachers) document analysis
(lesson plans, classes reflections and students’ Portfolios) recording of classes with emphasis in
the project and semi structured interviews to six students of the class, after the pedagogical
intervention. The data analysis allows the conclusion that, although the respondent teachers
tend to leave the statistics teaching to the last classes of the school year, they give importance to
the graphical representations in the teaching of these theme topics. These representations are
evident on the student’s school book because of the different topics explanation. The teaching
and learning of statistical topics through the graphical representations have potentiated some
discussion moments, comparison and information interpretation conveyed in them. These
activities favored the development of the majority of students’ capacity of reading the data. Some
students reveal difficulties when working some statistical topics through these representations,
for example the choosing of the appropriate scale and the comparison of graphical
representations without the numbered axes.
The obtained results in this study put in evidence the necessity to provide to students similar
experiences to that developed; the capability of interpreting and evaluating critically the available
information in the society
This dissertation addresses the unrelated parallel machine scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times and the objective is to minimize the makespan of a set of jobs. It is implemented the Particle Swarm Optimization, used to solve a problem from the literature, divided into small and large problems, depending on the number of jobs that are used.
Particle Swarm performance is evaluated through a comparative analysis between its solutions and the solutions obtained using Ant Colony Optimization, Simulated Annealing and Genetic Algorithm. For implementing the algorithm under study, the particle swarm toolbox from the MATLAB software was used, which tries to optimize using the Particle Swarm Optimization.
The results of the implementation show that for small problems the Particle Swarm can overcome the Genetic Algorithm in some instances, with the other three algorithms having lower makespan values. For large problems, the Particle Swarm superiority over Genetic Algorithm is clear, however, in relation to the other algorithms the same does not happen. There is also as increasing trend in the percentage variation between the algorithms as the number of machines increases for the same number of jobs
Having its starting point on a review of literature regarding the concepts of anger, hostility and aggression, distinct explicative models of aggressive behavior, in which the above concepts are partially or fully reflected, have been analyzed. These models reveal a plethora of complex interactions between environmental and personal factors, among which personality appears as potentially responsible for the occurrence of aggressive behavior. The present study was designed in a way to identify dimensions of personality, which lie beneath a predisposition to behave aggressively, in a sample of police officers, by using MMPI-2 (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2). This instrument delivers several indicators associated with aggressiveness and has been recurrently used in the psychological assessment of police officers. Based on the observed results an index of Good Cop/Bad Cop (Blau, Super & Brady, 1993) was used, in an exploratory analysis of nine cases selected from a dataset of psychological assessment of police officers. The structural analysis of the MMPI-2 profiles allowed us to identify differentiated scale configurations, with different probabilities of engaging in manifestations of aggressive behavior
Sensory evaluation is a science that uses the human senses vision, taste, smell, touch, and hearing as a measuring instrument to evaluate the characteristics or attributes of a product, being a methodology used in the food industry, whether in quality control or in new products development. Thus, Frulact, a company that operates in the agro-industrial sector and that stimulates innovative processes and methodologies, had the need to reformulate its panel of sensorial analysis and proposed the present work. The objective of this work is to assist Frulact in the construction of testing facilities for conducting organoleptic assessment and to recruit, select and train tasters to form a panel to evaluate the products produced in Tortosendo Frulact. In this sense, a total of 44 tasters, 21 women and 23 men, who were between the ages of 23 and 50, belonging to various sectors of the factory, were recruited internally. The recruited tasters were submitted to several tests, namely: Ishihara, of stimulus, basic tastes solutions discrimination, ranking of intensities and odor discrimination. Finally, 30 testers were selected for the training phase and integrate the Frulact sensory analysis panel. Due to the large number of samples to evaluate, it was decided to form five panels consisting of six people each, performing three moments of organoleptic assessment
Shiftwork schedules: from effect’s evaluation to intervention possibilities
Anchored on a wider research on the shiftwork effects, this study aims to contribute to the discussion of intervention possibilities in this issue considering, in particular, the role of the organizational context. This discussion is made with reference to three studies conducted in industrial companies which assessed some of the effects that are typically associated with shiftwork: effects on health, family and social life and satisfaction with the work shift. In the three companies 859 shift workers were involved. Data were gathered from a survey (the scales used in the survey included scales published in the literature and other developed by the research team). The correlation analysis indicated a statistically significant association between the perception of organizational support and the assessed effects. This association varied between -.19 with “sleep problems” and .47 with the interface with “life outside the company”. Beyond the relevance of management practices that can be used by organizations, other possibilities of intervention are presented/discussed. In both cases, the focus remains on the support that may be provided by the organizational context by promoting the adaptation to this work schedule
Effect of temperature on the phytotoxicity and cytotoxicity of Botryosphaeriaceae fungi
Botryosphaeriaceae fungi are phytopathogens and human opportunists. The influence of temperature on the phytotoxicity and cytotoxicity of culture filtrates of five Botryosphaeriaceae species was investigated. All culture filtrates of fungi grown at 25 °C were phytotoxic: symptoms were evaluated based on visual inspection of necrosis areas and on the maximum quantum yield of photosystem II, Fv/Fm. Diplodiacorticola and Neofusicoccum kwambonambiense were the most phytotoxic, followed by Neofusicoccum parvum CAA704 and Botryosphaeria dothidea. Phytotoxicity dramatically decreased when strains were grown at 37 °C, except for B. dothidea. All strains, except N. parvum CAA366 and Neofusicoccum eucalyptorum, grown either at 25 °C or 37 °C, were toxic to mammalian cells; at 25 °C and at 37°C, D. corticola and B. dothidea were the most cytotoxic, respectively. Although the toxicity of B. dothidea to both cell lines and of N. kwambonambiense to Vero cells increased with temperature, the opposite was found for the other species tested. Our results suggest that temperature modulates the expression of toxic compounds that, in a scenario of a global increase of temperature, may contribute to new plant infections but also human infections, especially in the case of B. dothidea.publishe

Uncommon Movement Disorders in Chronic Hepatic Disease with Response to Rifaximin
Background: Chronic hepatic disease can present with extrapyramidal symptoms. We describe two cases that presented with highly unusual movement disorders: ballism and gait freezing.
Case report: Patient 1 is a 42-year-old man with previous episodes of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) who presented with upper limb dystonia and generalized chorea that progressed to ballism. Patient 2 is a 55-year-old woman who presented with pronounced gait freezing. In both patients, features of HE and acquired hepatocerebral degeneration coexisted. They improved markedly, though transiently, with rifaximin.
Discussion: Ammonia-reducing treatments should be considered in patients presenting with movement disorders due to chronic liver disease
Antibacterial hydrogel dressings and their applications in wound treatment
Antimicrobial hydrogels, both in semi-stiff sheets and amorphous form, have been extensively
studied for wound management mainly owing to their high-water content, lower wound
adherence, promoted autolysis debridement, epithelial migration, and granulation growth.
Benefiting from the recent advances in materials science, biotechnology, and a growing
understanding of wound microbiology, an extensive variety of antimicrobial hydrogels have
been developed. These novel antimicrobial hydrogels can prevent and control microbial
infection. In addition, they possess wound healing functions for improved wound management.
This chapter will provide a comprehensive summary of the current studied antimicrobial
hydrogels in literature and available hydrogel dressings in the market, including their design,
fabrication method, and wound management efficacy in vitro or in vivo. The detailed and
critical discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of hydrogel dressing will
provide insights into the future design of antimicrobial hydrogels for better management of
wounds in clinical application
Effect of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on the metabolome of two strains of Lasiodiplodia theobromae isolated from grapevine
The effect of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on the metabolome of two strains of Lasiodiplodia theobromae isolated from grapevine that hold a different degree of virulence to the host plant (LA-SOL3 (more virulent), LA-SV1 (less virulent)) was investigated. The culture filtrates and crude extracts from the two strains grown in the presence and absence of 10 mM of GABA were tested for phytotoxicity on tomato plant cuttings and leaves, respectively. Considering the opportunistic nature of this fungus for humans, crude extracts were also tested for cytotoxicity on mammalian cell lines. We found that culture filtrates and crude extracts have a decreased toxicity in the presence of GABA. Metabolomic analysis, conducted on both strains at both growth conditions, revealed the production of several compounds, such as indole-3-carboxylic acid (ICA, which is the main compound produced by L. theobromae), 3-indolecarboxyaldehyde, (3R,4S)-botryodiplodin, (R)-mellein. Finally, data demonstrate that GABA both induces a decrease in the amount of ICA, and a diversification of the metabolites produced by L. theobromae.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
