    Detection of hepatitis C virus RNA in saliva of patients with active infection not associated with periodontal or liver disease severity

    BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is mainly transmitted by parenteral route, being blood transfusion and intravenous drug use the most frequent risk factors. However, it has been suggested that there are other routes of transmission. There are several studies where HCV RNA has been detected in saliva of patients infected with HCV, and epidemiological studies have proposed the dental treatments as possible risk factors for HCV transmission. The purpose of this study was to detect the presence of HCV RNA in saliva of patients with active infection and associating with periodontal or liver disease. METHODS: Patients with quantifiable HCV-RNA in serum were enrolled in the study. Periodontal disease was assessed using the modified gingival index (MGI). Presence of dental plaque was assessed with the use of disclosing tablets. Patients were clinically and laboratory evaluated to identify the stage of liver disease, the HCV RNA was determinate in saliva by nested RT-PCR. To determine associations between different parameters univariate and multivariate analysis were used. RESULTS: A total of 45 patients were included. Of these patients, 21 (46.6%) had hepatitis, 23 (51.1%) had cirrhosis and one patient (2.4%) presented hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Viral loads in serum ranged from 2.31–6.68 log IU/ml with a mean of 5.46 log IU/ml (95% CI 5.23–5.70). HCV RNA was positive in saliva of 29 patients (64.4%) and was not detected in 16 (35.6%). For univariate analysis three independent variables were associated with the detection of HCV-RNA in saliva: gender, viral load and dental plaque and multivariate analysis only one independent variable viral load >5.17 log IU/mL remained significantly associated with the detection of HCV in saliva (p = 0.0002). A statistical difference was observed when viral load was analyzed, log 5.85 IU/mL (95% CI 5.67–6.02) for patients with HCV in saliva vs. log 4.77 IU/mL (95% CI 4.35–5.19) for patients without HCV in saliva (p = 0.0001). The detection of HCV-RNA in saliva was more frequent in patients with relatively high serum viral loads. CONCLUSION: HCV-RNA in saliva was associated with the level of serum viral load but not with periodontal or liver disease severity

    Gene therapy with mesenchymal stem cells expressing IFN-ß ameliorates neuroinflammation in experimental models of multiple sclerosis

    [Background and Purpose]: Recombinant IFN‐ß is one of the first‐line treatments in multiple sclerosis (MS), despite its lack of efficacy in some patients. In this context, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) represent a promising therapeutic alternative due to their immunomodulatory properties and multipotency. Moreover, by taking advantage of their pathotropism, these cells can be genetically modified to be used as carriers for delivering or secreting therapeutic drugs into injured tissues. Here, we report the therapeutic effect of systemic delivery of adipose‐derived MSCs (AdMSCs), transduced with the IFN‐β gene, into mice with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE).[Experimental Approach]: Relapsing–remitting and chronic progressive EAE were induced in mice. Cells were injected i.v. Disease severity, inflammation and tissue damage were assessed clinically, by flow cytometry of spleens and histopathological evaluation of the CNS respectively.[Key Results]: Genetic engineering did not modify the biological characteristics of these AdMSCs (morphology, growth rate, immunophenotype and multipotency). Furthermore, the transduction of IFN‐ß to AdMSCs maintained and, in some cases, enhanced the functional properties of AdMSCs by ameliorating the symptoms of MS in EAE models and by decreasing indications of peripheral and central neuro‐inflammation.[Conclusion and Implications]: Gene therapy was found to be more effective than cell therapy in ameliorating several clinical parameters in both EAE models, presumably due to the continuous expression of IFN‐β.     MOOC on "Ultra-dense networks for 5G and its evolution": challenges and lessons learned

Controlling drones thousands of miles away, performing remote surgeries or being immersed in video with no latency will also be a huge game changer. Those are some of the few things that make the fifth generation (5G) a revolution expected to be a thrust to the economy. To that end, the design and density of deployment of new networks is also changing becoming more dense, what introduces new challenges into play. What else will it add to previous generations? The MOOC about Ultra-dense networks for 5G and its evolution has been prepared by the researchers of an European MSCA ITN, named TeamUp5G, and introduces the most important technologies that support 5G mobile communications, with an emphasis on increasing capacity and reducing power. The content spans from aspects of communication technologies to use cases, prototyping and the future ahead, not forgetting issues like interference management, energy efficiency or spectrum management. The aim of the MOOC is to fill the gap in graduation and post-graduation learning on content related to emerging 5G technologies and its applications, including the future 6G. The target audience involves engineers, researchers, practitioners and students. This paper describes the content and the learning outcomes of the MOOC, the main tasks and resources involved in its creation, the joint contributions from the academic and non-academic sector, and aspects like copyright compliance, quality assurance, testing and details on communication and enrollment, followed by the discussion of the lessons learned.This work has received funding from the European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie ETN TeamUp5G, grant agreement No. 813391

    Muitos dos novos dispositivos de comunicações móveis serão aparelhos que alimentam e monitorizam as nossas casas, infraestruturas urbanas e transportes. Controlar drones a milhares de quilómetros de distância, realizar cirurgias remotas ou estar imerso em vídeo com latência reduzida transformará certamente o acesso às tecnologias de informação e comunicação digitais. Estes são alguns dos aspetos que tornarão a quinta geração das comunicações móveis (5G) uma revolução, um impulso para a economia, e o foco de todos os intervenientes atuais na área das telecomunicações. Com este intuito, o planeamento e a crescente densidade de implantação destas novas redes introduzem novos desafios de otimização. Que elementos serão adicionados em relação às gerações anteriores? Baseados num Curso Online Acessível a Todos (MOOC) anteriormente desenvolvido na UC3M (UC3M Staff, 2022), o MOOC sobre redes ultra-densas 5G e sua evolução foi elaborado pelos investigadores da Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) ITN/ETN Europeia (teamUp5G Reserachers, 2022), denominada TeamUp5G (Teamup5G, 2022; Pérez Leal et al., 2020) e apresenta as tecnologias mais importantes que suportam comunicações móveis 5G, com ênfase no aumento de capacidade e redução de energia, que facilitam o desenvolvimento de redes com pequenas células. Os conteúdos abrangem aspectos desde tecnologias de comunicação até casos de utilização, prototipagem e o futuro próximo, sem esquecer questões como a gestão de interferência, eficiência energética ou gestão de espectro. O objetivo do MOOC (TeamUp5G, 2022) é preencher a lacuna na aprendizagem ao nível dos estudos de graduação e pós-graduação, em conteúdos relacionados com tecnologias 5G emergentes e suas aplicações, incluindo a 6G futura. O público-alvo envolve engenheiros, investigadores, profissionais e estudantes.     Reorganization of Functional Networks in Mild Cognitive Impairment

    Whether the balance between integration and segregation of information in the brain is damaged in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) subjects is still a matter of debate. Here we characterize the functional network architecture of MCI subjects by means of complex networks analysis. Magnetoencephalograms (MEG) time series obtained during a memory task were evaluated by synchronization likelihood (SL), to quantify the statistical dependence between MEG signals and to obtain the functional networks. Graphs from MCI subjects show an enhancement of the strength of connections, together with an increase in the outreach parameter, suggesting that memory processing in MCI subjects is associated with higher energy expenditure and a tendency toward random structure, which breaks the balance between integration and segregation. All features are reproduced by an evolutionary network model that simulates the degenerative process of a healthy functional network to that associated with MCI. Due to the high rate of conversion from MCI to Alzheimer Disease (AD), these results show that the analysis of functional networks could be an appropriate tool for the early detection of both MCI and AD

    Características clínico-epidemiológicas de pacientes hipertensos en un Consultorio Médico de Santa Clara

    High blood pressure is a chronic non-transmittable disease, which is also a risk factor for the development of other clinical conditions. The incidence of arterial hypertension in the Cuban population is high.Aim: to characterize the evolution of arterial hypertension in a Family Doctor's Office.Methods: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out at the Family Doctor's Office 17-19 in the municipality of Santa Clara. The study covered the months of January to March 2020. Of the 256 hypertensive patients, a sample of 52 was selected by a simple random method.Results: Males predominated (53.84 %), together with the age group between 40 and 49 years (28.84 %). A total of 63.46 % of the patients were white-skinned. 51.61% presented risk factors. The risk factors with the highest incidence were smoking, followed by obesity and sedentary lifestyle.Conclusions: the most affected hypertensive patients are male. Most patients have a family history of high blood pressure. Smoking is a high incidence risk factor in the hypertensive population.Introducción: la hipertensión arterial es una enfermedad crónica no transmisible, que a la vez constituye un factor de riesgo para el desarrollo de otras enfermedades. La incidencia de la hipertensión arterial en la población de Cuba es alta.Objetivo: caracterizar el comportamiento de la hipertensión arterial en un Consultorio Médico de Familia.Métodos: se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal en el Consultorio Médico de Familia 17-19 del municipio Santa Clara. El período de estudio comprendió los meses de enero a marzo del 2020. La población fue de 256 hipertensos y se escogió una muestra de 52 hipertensos por muestreo aleatorio simple.Resultados: predominó el sexo masculino (53,84 %), y el grupo de edad entre 40 y 49 años (28,84 %). El 63,46 % de los pacientes fueron de color de la piel blanca. El 51,61 % presentaron factores de riesgo. Los factores de riesgo de mayor incidencia fueron el tabaquismo, seguido por la obesidad y el sedentarismo.Conclusiones: los pacientes hipertensos más afectados son los del sexo masculino. La mayor parte de los pacientes tienen antecedentes familiares de hipertensión arterial. El tabaquismo es un factor de riesgo de alta incidencia en la población hipertensa

    Este título, sugestivo por los impactos durante la situación de la Covid 19 en el mundo, y que en Colombia lastimosamente han sido muy críticos, permiten asumir la obligada superación de tensiones sociales, políticas, y económicas; pero sobre todo científicas y tecnológicas. Inicialmente, esto supone la existencia de una capacidad de la sociedad colombiana por recuperar su estado inicial después de que haya cesado la perturbación a la que fue sometida por la catastrófica pandemia, y superar ese anterior estado de cosas ya que se encontraban -y aún se encuentran- muchos problemas locales mal resueltos, medianamente resueltos, y muchos sin resolver: es decir, habrá que rediseñar y fortalecer una probada resiliencia social existente - producto del prolongado conflicto social colombiano superado parcialmente por un proceso de paz exitoso - desde la tecnociencia local; como lo indicaba Markus Brunnermeier - economista alemán y catedrático de economía de la Universidad de Princeton- en su libro The Resilient Society…La cuestión no es preveerlo todo sino poder reaccionar…aprender a recuperarse rápido.This title, suggestive of the impacts during the Covid 19 situation in the world, and which have unfortunately been very critical in Colombia, allows us to assume the obligatory overcoming of social, political, and economic tensions; but above all scientific and technological.     Histopathologic characteristics of biopsies from dogs undergoing surgery with concurrent gross splenic and hepatic masses: 125 cases (2012–2016)

    Abstract Objective To investigate the histopathologic characteristics of concurrent splenic and liver masses in dogs undergoing splenectomy and liver mass biopsy/resection. Medical records of 125 client-owned dogs found to have splenic mass or masses and a liver mass or masses during surgery were examined. Signalment (age, sex, breed), body weight, and results of histopathology were recorded for all dogs. Results Twenty-seven percent (34/125) of the dogs in this study had no evidence of malignancy in either the liver or the spleen. Sixty of 125 dogs (48.0%) had malignancy in the spleen and liver, and 56 (56/60, 93.3%) of those dogs had the same malignancy in both organs. Signalment was similar to that in other reports of splenic pathology. In this clinical population of dogs, 27% of dogs with concurrent gross splenic and liver masses discovered intraoperatively had benign lesions in both locations and therefore had a favorable prognosis
