Integrating Backcasting and Eco-design for the Circular Economy: The BECE Framework
The circular economy (CE) is essential for decoupling economic growth from resource consumption and environmental impacts. However, effective implementation requires a systemic change across supply chains, involving both technological and nontechnological innovations. Frameworks are beginning to emerge to foster CE thinking in organizations. However, literature review carried out as part of this research has revealed gaps in their ability to fulfil CE requirements. Furthermore, few frameworks provide support on how CE requirements may be implemented. To address these issues, this article presents a new framework, BECE (backcasting and eco-design for the circular economy), to ensure that businesses can implement CE requirements more readily. BECE empowers organizations to tackle the CE holistically by embedding the concept into corporate decision making and by bringing operational and systems thinking together, thus increasing the likelihood of successful implementation. The potential of the BECE framework was tested through a pilot workshop focusing on the development of a CE business model through redesign of products and supply chains. Using vacuum cleaners as an illustrative case study, several product design and supply-chain alternatives were identified, including the development of scenarios and action plans for their implementation at the business level. Although the case study focuses on a particular product, the BECE framework is generic and applicable across different products and business sectors
Diurnal variation of precipitable water vapor over Central and South America
Annual and seasonal diurnal precipitable water vapor (PWV) variations over Central and South America are analyzed for the period 2007–2013. PWV values were obtained from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) observations of sixty-nine GNSS tracking stations. Histograms by climate categories show that PWV values for temperate, polar and cold dry climate have a positive skewed distribution and for tropical climates (except for monsoon subtype) show a negative skewed distribution. The diurnal PWV and surface temperatures (T) anomaly datasets are analyzed by using principal components analysis (PCA). The first two modes represent more than 90% of the PWV variability. The first PCA mode of PWV variability shows a maximum amplitude value in the late afternoon few hours later than the respective values for surface temperature (T), therefore the temperature and the surface conditions (to yield evaporation) could be the main agents producing this variability; PWV variability in inland stations are mainly represented by this mode. The second mode of PWV variability shows a maximum amplitude at midnight, a possible explanation of this behavior is the effect of the sea/valley breeze. The coastal and valley stations are affected by this mode in most cases. Finally, the “undefined” stations, surrounded by several water bodies, are mainly affected by the second mode with negative eigenvectors. In the seasonal analysis, both the undefined and valley stations constitute the main cases that show a sea or valley breeze only during some seasons, while the rest of the year they present a behavior according to their temperature and the surface conditions. As a result, the PCA proves to be a useful numerical tool to represent the main sub-daily PWV variabilities.Fil: Meza, Amalia Margarita. Universidad Nacional de La Plata. Multi-year GNSS monitoring of atmospheric IWV over Central and South America for climate studies
Atmospheric water vapour has been acknowledged as an essential climate variable. Weather prediction and hazard assessment systems benefit from real-time observations, whereas long-term records contribute to climate studies. Nowadays, ground-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) products have become widely employed, complementing satellite observations over the oceans. Although the past decade has seen a significant development of the GNSS infrastructure in Central and South America, its potential for atmospheric water vapour monitoring has not been fully exploited. With this in mind, we have performed a regional, 7-year-long and homogeneous analysis, comprising 136 GNSS tracking stations, obtaining high-rate and continuous observations of column-integrated water vapour and troposphere zenith total delay. As a preliminary application for this data set, we have estimated local water vapour trends, their significance, and their relation with specific climate regimes. We have found evidence of drying at temperate regions in South America, at a rate of about 2 % per decade, while a slow moistening of the troposphere over tropical regions is also weakly suggested by our results. Furthermore, we have assessed the regional performance of the empirical model GPT2w to blindly estimate troposphere delays. The model reproduces the observed mean delays fairly well, including their annual and semi-annual variations. Nevertheless, a long-term evaluation has shown systematical biases, up to 20 mm, probably inherited from the underlying atmospheric reanalysis. Additionally, the complete data set has been made openly available as supplementary material.Fil: Bianchi, Clara Eugenia. Universidad Nacional de La Plata. Exploration of Latina/Hispanic Women\u27s Experiences Living With Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: a Qualitative Study With Patients in Houston
OBJECTIVES: A deeper understanding of the lived experiences of Hispanic patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can help guide the development of behavioral programs that facilitate NAFLD management. This paper explores Hispanic women\u27s experiences living with NAFLD.
DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS: We collected brief sociodemographic questionnaires and conducted in-depth interviews with 12 low-income (all had household income ≤USD$55 000 per year) Hispanic women with NAFLD from the Houston area. Transcripts were audio-recorded and transcribed. We developed a coding scheme and used thematic analysis to identify emergent themes, supported by Atlas.ti.
RESULTS: Participants identified physicians as their main information source on NAFLD but also consulted the internet, family, friends and peers. Many were still left wanting more information. Participants identified family history, sedentary lifestyles, poor diet and comorbid conditions as causes for their NAFLD. Participants also reported emotional distress after diagnosis. Participants experienced both successes and challenges in making lifestyle changes in nutrition and physical activity. Some participants received desired social support in managing NAFLD, although there were conflicting feelings about spousal support.
CONCLUSION: Multifaceted programming that improves patient-provider communication, conveys accurate information and enhances social support is needed to support Hispanic women in managing NAFLD
Human Pleural Fluid Elicits Pyruvate and Phenylalanine Metabolism in Acinetobacter baumannii to Enhance Cytotoxicity and Immune Evasion
The CCAAT box-harboring proteins represent a family of heterotrimeric transcription factors which is highly conserved in eukaryotes. In fungi, one of the particularly important homologs of this family is the Hap complex that separates the DNA-binding domain from the activation domain and imposes essential impacts on regulation of a wide range of cellular functions. So far, a comprehensive summary of this complex has been described in filamentous fungi but not in the yeast. In this review, we summarize a number of studies related to the structure and assembly mode of the Hap complex in a list of representative yeasts. Furthermore, we emphasize recent advances in understanding the regulatory functions of this complex, with a special focus on its role in regulating respiration, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and iron homeostasis.Fil: Nyah, Rodman. Clinical and polysomnographic predictors of the Natural History of poor sleep in the general population
Study Objectives: Approximately 8-10% of the general population suffers from chronic insomnia, whereas another 20-30% of the population has
insomnia symptoms at any given time (i.e., poor sleep). However, few longitudinal studies have examined risk factors of the natural history of poor
sleep, and none have examined the role of polysomnographic (PSG) variables.
Design: Representative longitudinal study.
Setting: Sleep laboratory.
Participants: From a random, general population sample of 1,741 individuals of the adult Penn State Cohort, 1,395 were followed up after 7.5 yr.
Measurements: Full medical evaluation and 1-night PSG at baseline and telephone interview at follow-up.
Results: The rate of incident poor sleep was 18.4%. Physical (e.g., obesity, sleep apnea, and ulcer) and mental (e.g., depression) health conditions
and behavioral factors (e.g., smoking and alcohol consumption) increased the odds of incident poor sleep as compared to normal sleep. The rates
of persistent, remitted, and poor sleepers who developed chronic insomnia were 39%, 44%, and 17%, respectively. Risk factors for persistent poor
sleep were physical health conditions combined with psychologic distress. Shorter objective sleep duration and a family history of sleep problems
were risk factors for poor sleep evolving into chronic insomnia.
Conclusions: Poor sleep appears to be primarily a symptom of physical and mental health conditions, whereas the persistence of poor sleep is
associated with psychologic distress. Importantly, sleep apnea appears to be associated with incident poor sleep but not with chronic insomnia.
Finally, this study suggests that objective short sleep duration in poor sleepers is a biologic marker of genetic predisposition to chronic insomniaThis research was funded in part by the National Institutes of

This project describes the guidelines to consider for the implementation of good
practices of gender equity, based on the data and opinions taken in the interviews. The
purpose of this study is to define criteria and considerations that serve as reference and
guidance for the companies that do not have an equity plan or are already in the process of
implementing it.
This study carried out the following objectives: (a) investigate the implementation and
development of good practices of gender equity, (b) benefits that companies perceive when
implementing good practices of gender equity, (c) detect lessons learned, as a consequence of
the barriers they have found in the process of incorporating good practices of gender equity,
and (d) detecting success factors in the process of implementing good practices of gender
equity. To meet the objectives of the investigation, 18 cases were studied, and interviews
were conducted in the different companies. The results showed that the elements that should
be taken into consideration to implement good gender equity practices are, mainly, the
following: the matrix guidelines, diversity or equity policy, action axes, diversity committee,
needs identification tools, corporate communication, training and equity programs, practices
of life-work balance, sexual harassment and violence prevention and indicators are the
elements that should be taken at implementing good equity practices. It is important to
mention that although gender violence is an element found during the investigation and that it
was considered relevant, at the beginning it was not in the research.
Therefore, it is important to share an integrated model with elements that require the
successful implementation of gender equity practices, so that more companies can work for
equity and under a diversity strategy.Tesi
MTHFR rs1801133 Polymorphism Is Associated With Liver Fibrosis Progression in Chronic Hepatitis C: A Retrospective Study.
Background: The MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) rs1801133 polymorphism leads to higher circulating levels of homocysteine, which is related to several liver diseases. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between MTHFR rs1801133 polymorphism and liver fibrosis progression in HCV-infected patients. Methods: We conducted a preliminary retrospective cohort study in 208 non-cirrhotic HCV-infected patients. These subjects had at least two liver stiffness measurements (LSM), which were assessed using transient elastography, and no patient had cirrhosis at baseline. We analyzed the association between MTHFR rs1801133 and outcome variables using Generalized Linear Models. Results: HCV-infected patients were 47 years old, around 54% were males, a low frequency of high alcohol intake (13.5%) or prior use of intravenous drugs (10.1%). A total of 26 patients developed cirrhosis (LSM1 ≥ 12.5) during a median follow-up of 46.6 months. The presence of the rs1801133 C allele showed an inverse association with the LSM2/LSM1 ratio (adjusted AMR = 0.90; 95%CI = 0.83-0.98; p = 0.020) and the cirrhosis progression (adjusted OR = 0.43; 95%CI = 0.19-0.95; p = 0.038). Besides, rs1801133 CT/CC genotype had an inverse association with the LSM2/LSM1 ratio (adjusted AMR = 0.80; 95%CI = 0.68-0.95; p = 0.009) and the cirrhosis progression (adjusted OR= 0.21; 95%CI = 0.06-0.74; p = 0.015). Conclusions:MTHFR rs1801133 C allele carriers presented a diminished risk of liver fibrosis progression and development of cirrhosis than rs1801133 T allele carriers. This statement supports the hypothesis that MTHFR rs1801133 polymorphism appears to play a crucial role in chronic hepatitis C immunopathogenesis. This work has been supported by grants given by Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) (grant # PI17CIII/00003 to SR).
In the following lines, the subject of suffering due to violence will be deepened and what psychosocial coping resources can be proposed in these situations to observe the damage caused by them. From the narrative approach, experiences lived as a result of the armed conflict in Colombian territory will be recognized and, like all the victims who were part of the events, today they stand out for having a great capacity for resilience after all those traumatic events and sociopolitical attacks. It is important to mention that Colombia has been a country with multiple stories of violence that have marked the lives of individuals, families and entire communities due to crimes committed, this leads to reviewing the mental health problems in which many victims are inverse, suffering serious consequences for everything lived. Due to these events, these victims have acquired tools to be able to face these situations that have been presented; creating and building hopes that allow new beginnings for a better future. With the case that will be carried out, various psychosocial approach strategies will be implemented for the reestablishment of the social fabric, given that, from the role of the psychologist, this is what is sought, to provide the appropriate tools according to each situation experienced, having taken into account the dimension of affectations that each fact has brought with it
