    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Update of the quarterly model of the Bank of Spain

This paper presents the update of the macroeconometric model used at the Bank of Spain for medium term macroeconomic forecasting of the Spanish economy, as well as for performing policy simulations. The many changes that the Spanish economy has experimented in the last years, and the new system of national accounts published by the national statistical office, suggested that a reestimation of the model was due. This paper presents such reestimation with newer data (up to the end of 2005), and includes some modifications that were deemed necessary in certain equations. The quarterly model of the Bank of Spain keeps a similar structure to its previous versionit is basically a demand-driven model. The Spanish economy is found, in general, more sensitive than in previous periods to changes in exogenous variables, especially to the financial conditions. The new model also shows changes in demographic trends, and presents an external sector less sensitive to changes in price-competitivenes

Immune System Remodelling by Prenatal Betamethasone : Effects on β-Cells and Type 1 Diabetes

    Get PDF
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a multifactorial disease of unknown aetiology. Studies focusing on environment-related prenatal changes, which might have an influence on the development of T1D, are still missing. Drugs, such as betamethasone, are used during this critical period without exploring possible effects later in life. Betamethasone can interact with the development and function of the two main players in T1D, the immune system and the pancreatic β-cells. Short-term or persistent changes in any of these two players may influence the initiation of the autoimmune reaction against β-cells. In this review, we focus on the ability of betamethasone to induce alterations in the immune system, impairing the recognition of autoantigens. At the same time, betamethasone affects β-cell gene expression and apoptosis rate, reducing the danger signals that will attract unwanted attention from the immune system. These effects may synergise to hinder the autoimmune attack. In this review, we compile scattered evidence to provide a better understanding of the basic relationship between betamethasone and T1D, laying the foundation for future studies on human cohorts that will help to fully grasp the role of betamethasone in the development of T1D

When World War II concluded in 1945 the United States and Soviet Union began a period of tension and confrontation known as the Cold War, which lasted until the 1990s. American cinema took advantage of this historical period to convey ideological messages dictated by the political elite through films set in the Antiquity, such as Samson and Delilah, The Ten Commandments and Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. This article aims to analyse the cinematographic heritage in order to understand its function as a vehicle for the transmission of contemporary ideologies to the historical periods in which those movies were set

Hyper-Cross-Linked Porous Polymer Featuring B−N Covalent Bonds (HCP-BNs): A Stable and Efficient Metal-Free Heterogeneous Photocatalyst

    Get PDF
The first example of a porous polymer containing B-Ncovalentbonds, prepared from a tetraphene B-N monomer and biphenylas a comonomer, is reported. It was prepared using the solvent knittingstrategy, which allows the connection between the aromatic rings ofthe two monomers through methylene groups provided by an externalcross-linking agent. The new polymer exhibited micromeso porositywith an S (BET) of 612 m(2)/g, highthermal stability, and potential properties as a heterogeneous photocatalyst, since it is very active in the aza-Henry coupling reaction (>98%ofconversion and selectivity). After the first run, the catalyst improvesits photocatalytic activity, shortening the reaction time to only2 h and maintaining this activity in successive runs. The presenceof a radical in this structure that remains stable with successiveruns makes it a new type of material with potential applications asa highly stable and efficient photocatalyst.Ministerio de Ciencia e InnovaciónComunidad de Madri

Scientific social networks (SSN) have been an important advance in the dissemination of knowledge in the scientific community. There are more and more researchers who agree on the need to join some SSN on account of the many advantages of visibility and impact they offer. This research paper studies the knowledge and use of SSN in the three Galician universities in 2017. Surveys of 552 professor/researchers from A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela and Vigo universities show that the knowledge and use of SSN have a growing trend, and that its management and usefulness assessment is positive, although their access frequency is still low
