After being discarded as rubbish when the company closed in 1996, the models are rescued and, ultimately, exhibited in an art gallery. This transforms the models into aesthetically pleasing objects and reinforces their candidacy to become part of the local protected cultural heritage. As they failed to do so, in the end, they find their way into the antiques market. A trajectory that is conditioned by a central issue: the apparent lack of authorship that allows the appropiation and the invisibilization of the work carried out by working class communitie

Nuestra idea final trataría de poner varios dispositivos a lo largo del espigón para así de esta manera poder captar la máxima energía en esta zona.[ANGLÈS] In this final degree project we have made a mechanical prototype capable of capturing the energy that is lost from the waves of the sea (wave energy) in the breakwater of Vilanova i la Geltrú. By studying and analysing the mechanisms and prototypes of current companies in the market, we obtain some ideas for our device. We have also analysed the behaviour of the waves at our point of study, which is at the pier of the beach of the lighthouse (Vilanova i la Geltrú) and taking into account the waves and tides, we have designed a more suitable prototype for this location. Our final idea would try to put several devices along the jetty in order to capture the maximum energy in this area

    Get PDF

Mathematical analysis and numerical resolution of a heat transfer problem arising in water recirculation

    Get PDF
This work is devoted to the analysis and resolution of a well-posed mathematical model for several processes involved in the artificial circulation of water in a large waterbody. This novel formulation couples the convective heat transfer equation with the modified Navier–Stokes system following a Smagorinsky turbulence model, completed with a suitable set of mixed, nonhomogeneous boundary conditions of diffusive, convective and radiative type. We prove several theoretical results related to existence of solution, and propose a full algorithm for its computation, illustrated with some realistic numerical examples.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad | Ref. Controlling eutrophication by means of water recirculation: An optimal control perspective

    Get PDF
In this work, the artificial recirculation of water is presented and analyzed, from the perspective of the optimal control of partial differential equations, as a tool to prevent eutrophication effects in large waterbodies. A novel formulation of the environmental problem, based on the coupling of nonlinear models for hydrodynamics, water temperature and concentrations of the different species involved in the eutrophication processes, is introduced. After a complete and rigorous analysis of the existence of optimal solutions, a full numerical algorithm for their computation is proposed. Finally, some numerical results for a realistic scenario are shown, in order to prove the efficiency of our approachThe authors would like to thank the anonymous referees for their interesting comments, suggestions and corrections, as they have greatly contributed to improve the quality of the manuscript. In this work we introduce a well-posed mathematical model for the processes involved in the artificial circulation of water, in order to avoid eutrophication phenomena, for instance, in a lake. This novel and general formulation is based on the modified Navier–Stokes equations following the Smagorinsky model of turbulence, and presenting a suitable nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. For the analytical study of the problem, we prove several theoretical results related to existence, uniqueness and smoothness for the solution of this recirculation model.Xunta de Galicia | Ref. Purpose: To examine the association between body composition, functional status and cognitive function in the elderly, including potential gender differences. Methods: A total of 145 elderly (Age 81.1±9.3 years; Weight 66.2±14.4 Kg; BMI 27.5±5.5 Kg/m2), were volunteers. Abdominal bioelectrical impedance analysis and waist circumference (WC) was measured using the ViScan (Tanita Corporation). In addition, anthropometric measurements were performed. BMI and waist–hip ratio (WHR) were calculated using classical equations, and sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD) as abdominal adiposity markers. Cognitive function was evaluated through the Mini-Examination Cognitive (MEC) score and functional status was measured using the Barthel Index. The Kendall-Tau and Spearman rank correlation coefficient were used to explore associations between variables. Results/findings: Barthel score was positively associated with weight (Kendall τ = 0.12, P0.05), and inversely with age (Rho = -0.33, P<0.01). WC, WHR and SAD were not significantly associated with Barthel score. No significant gender differences were found between variables. MEC score was positively associated with BMI, SAD and WC (Rho = 0.19; Rho = 0.17, P<0.05; Rho = 0.22, P<0.01, respectively), visceral fat and gluteus perimeter (Kendall τ = 0.17 both, P<0.05), and inversely with age and WHR, not significantly. These associations were strengthened in women. Conclusions: Our results suggest that high BMI and prevent weight loss could be a positive factor for physical functioning level and a protective factor for dementia in the oldest old. In this observational study, visceral fat were associated with decreased risk of developing dementia, but not with functional status. A plausible explanation should be higher BMI and weight might be related with higher lean mass. However, when the analysis was performed, separated by gender, this association was observed only in women for dementia. In view of the fact that loss of lean tissues occurs exponentially with aging, promotion of physical activity programs targeted at weight maintenance would be important.Universidad de Málaga.
