Use of sun gear orbits to obtain the load sharing in planetary transmissions and its impact in the tooth load

    Get PDF
The present work assesses the possibility of using the orbits described by the sun gear in order to analyse the load sharing ratio in planetary gear transmissions. Furthermore, the current work is extended to observe the impact of the floatability and different tangential pinhole position errors in the load borne in a single contact between a pair of teeth in comparison to the load per planet. Therefore, it highlights the inaccuracy of the load sharing ratio (LSR) as an indicator of the overload in one tooth of the planet. Moreover, the use of the orbits represented with respect to a rotating reference provides helpful information to determine the overloads and underloads in the planets due to the existence of a tangential error in sequentially phased transmissions. Therefore, this proposal provides a simpler solution to the measurement of the LSR in planetary transmissions with different numbers of planets than the use of strain gauges. The authors would like to acknowledge Project DPI2017-85390-P funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry, and Competitiveness for supporting this research. Molecular dynamics simulations of the role of salinity and temperature on the hydrocarbon/water interfacial tension

    Get PDF
Interfacial tension of some hydrocarbon/water systems, including a mixture of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, has been estimated on the basis of molecular dynamics simulations. The dependence of the interfacial properties on the salinity of the aqueous phase and the temperature has been simulated. Different concentrations in NaCl and CaCl2 up to 2 M have been used. It is found that, in all considered cases, interfacial tension increases with salt concentration. This effect depends on the preference of the salt ions for the bulk of the aqueous phase that, in turns, results in an increased difficulty for the water molecules to be at the interface. The influence of salinity is fundamentally electrostatic in origin and does not depends on the chemical nature of the salt cation. Finally, the impact of temperature on the dodecane/brine interfacial tension has also been inspected. A decreasing of the values of the interfacial tension is found in agreement, both in trend and magnitude, with experimental available dat

Multicomponent magnetic nanoparticle engineering: the role of structure-property relationship in advanced applications

    Get PDF
Combining magnetic nanomaterials with materials of other classes can produce multicomponent nanoparticles with an entire ensemble of new structures and unique, enhanced, synergetic, and/or complementary functionalities. Here we discuss the most recent developments in the synthesis of multicomponent magnetic nanoparticles, describe the resulting structures and their novel properties, and explore their application in a variety of fields, including multimodal imaging, nanomedicine, sensing, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and heterogeneous catalysis. The current synthetic methods (usu-ally bottom-up approaches) of multicomponent nanoparticles can produce a number of tailored mor-phologies (core@shell, yolk-shell, core-satellite, Janus, nanochains, anisotropic, etc.), making them invaluable for applications in biology, medicine, chemistry, physics, and engineering. But like any new technology, their synthesis methods need to be optimized to be simple, scalable, and as environmentally friendly as possible before they can be widely adopted. In particular, the use of life cycle assessment (LCA) to guide future works toward environmental sustainability is highlighted. Overall, this review not only presents a critical and timely summary of the state-of-the-art of this burgeoning field in both fundamental and applied nanotechnology, but also addresses the challenges associated with under-standing the particular structure-property relationships of multicomponent magnetic nanoparticles. The authors thank funding from the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI) through the project PID2019-106099RB-C43/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and from the Basque Government Industry and Education Department under the ELKARTEK, HAZITEK and PIBA (PIBA-2018-06) programs, respectively

Removing lead from water with carboxylate dendrimers and magnetic nanoparticles modified with carboxylate dendrimers

    Get PDF
Contamination of water with heavy metals as lead (Pb2+) is a relevant problematic issue. In this work, we have tested diferent types of dendritic materials for lead removal from water and further recovery. The systems employed are magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) modifed with monocarboxylate and dendritic carboxylate ligands, and they are compared to pristine MNP and carbosilane dendrimers. They are all efective at removing Pb2+, but the key variations are in their recyclability. The usage of a fltering membrane was required for dendrimers, which was signifcantly degraded by the acidic media. In terms of MNP, those that were covered by dendritic molecules were clearly less damaged in acidic media. Finally, isotherm analysis revealed that Pb2+ interacts diferently with unmodifed and modifed MNP.Networking Research Center on Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER¿BBN)Ministerio de Ciencia e InnovaciónComunidad de MadridUniversidad de Alcal

Colonisatoin of Pinus halepensis roots by Pseudomonas fluorescens and interaction with the ectomycorrhizal fungus Suillus granulatus

    Get PDF
8 pages, figures, and tables statistics.Colonisation of Pinus halepensis roots by GFP-tagged Pseudomonas fluorescens Aur6 was monitored by epifluorescence microscopy and dilution plating. Aur6-GFP was able to colonise and proliferate on P. halepensis roots. Co-inoculation with the ectomycorrhizal fungus Suillus granulatus did not affect the bacterial colonisation pattern whereas it had an effect on bacterial density. Bacterial counts increased during the first 20 days of seedling growth, irrespective of seedlings being mycorrhizal or not. After 40 days, bacterial density significantly decreased and bacteria concentrated on the upper two-thirds of the pine root. The presence of S. granulatus significantly stimulated survival of bacteria in the root elongation zone where fungal colonisation was higher. The number of mycorrhizas formed by S. granulatus was not affected by co-inoculation with Aur6-GFP. Neither Aur6-GFP nor S. granulatus stimulated P. halepensis development when inoculated alone, but a synergistic effect was observed on seedling growth when bacteria and fungus were co-inoculated.Peer reviewe

Nanoprogrammed Cross-Kingdom Communication Between Living Microorganisms

[EN] The engineering of chemical communication at the micro/nanoscale is a key emergent topic in micro/nanotechnology, synthetic biology, and related areas. However, the field is still in its infancy; previous advances, although scarce, have mainly focused on communication between abiotic micro/nanosystems or between microvesicles and living cells. Here, we have implemented a nanoprogrammed cross-kingdom communication involving two different microorganisms and tailor-made nanodevices acting as "nanotranslators". Information flows from the sender cells (bacteria) to the nanodevice and from the nanodevice to receiver cells (yeasts) in a hierarchical way, allowing communication between two microorganisms that otherwise would not interact.B.d.L. is grateful to the Spanish Government for her FPU Ph.D. fellowship.
