Communicative problems of modern languages students when translating

    Get PDF
Translation is an activity that needs communication because it is a process that transmits a message to a person, so that it can be understood correctly in a target language. Communication is done through a medium in circumscribed situations in time and space. Each specific situation determines about what and how people communicate. Situations are not universal, but they are embedded in a cultural habitat, which in turn has an impact on them. Communication gets more complex when it comes to transmitting a message from one language to another. For this reason, translated texts begin to present cohesion and coherence problems, and this was evidenced in the text translation class because the students of modern languages at ECCI University began to have difficulties at the moment of translating, because of that, the main purpose of the present thesis is to give a detailed description of the communicative problems students face, when they translate in the specific case from English into Spanish and vice versa.Acknowledgments Dedication Chapter I Introduction 1 Statement of the Problem 1.1 Research Questions and Objectives 1.1.2 General Objective 1.1.3 Specific Objectives 1.2 Rationale Chapter II Theoretical Frame 2 State of art Literature Review 2.1 The Newmark dual theory of semantic and communicative translation methods 2.2 Translation problems according to Christiane Nord 2.2.1 Problems of translation 2.3.2 Difficulties of translation according to Nord: 2.4 Translator's role as a cultural mediator according to Gabriela Palermo 2.5 Cultural intertextuality seen as the reason for semantic structural changing between the source text and the target text Research Design 3.1 Type of Study 3.2 Data Collection Instruments and Procedures 3.3 Research Participants Chapter IV Data Analysis 4.1 Cultural problems 4.2 Language problems 4.3 Technical vocabulary problems 4.4 Contrasting Results 4.4.1Translation methods 4.4.2 Translation competences 4.4.3 Translating Protocol 4.4.4 Types of texts Chapter IV 5 Conclusions 5.1 Main findings 5.2 Limitations 5.3 Further Research ReferencesPregradoProfesional en Lenguas ModernasLenguas Moderna
