Multi-lag analysis of symbolic entropies on EEG recordings for distress recognition

    Get PDF
Distress is a critical problem in developed societies given its long-term negative effects on physical and mental health. The interest in studying this emotion has notably increased during last years, being electroencephalography (EEG) signals preferred over other physiological variables in this research field. In addition, the non-stationary nature of brain dynamics has impulsed the use of non-linear metrics, such as symbolic entropies in brain signal analysis. Thus, the influence of time-lag on brain patterns assessment has not been tested. Hence, in the present study two permutation entropies denominated Delayed Permutation Entropy and Permutation Min-Entropy have been computed for the first time at different time-lags to discern between emotional states of calmness and distress from EEG signals. Moreover, a number of curve-related features were also calculated to assess brain dynamics across different temporal intervals. Complementary information among these variables was studied through sequential forward selection and 10-fold cross-validation approaches. According to the results obtained, the multi-lag entropy analysis has been able to reveal new significant insights so far undiscovered, thus notably improving the process of distress recognition from EEG recordings.Fil: Martínez Rodrigo, Arturo. Abstract: The role of sexual satisfaction in adolescents and young adults’ mental health has not been thoroughly investigated. The aim of this work is to study di_erences in sexual satisfaction and mental health (anxiety and depression) based on romantic relationship status (having a partner vs. not having one) and gender. Likewise, the association between sexual satisfaction and mental health and the moderating e_ect of romantic relationship status and gender was addressed in this research. A total of 1682 Spanish adolescents (14–17) and young adults (1829) agreed to participate in this cross-sectional investigation. Two-factor ANOVA and MANOVA, and hierarchical regression models were utilized in this study. In general, results showed more mental health for those not in a current relationship and for women. Additionally, higher levels of sexual satisfaction was associated with lower levels of anxiety for adolescents and lower levels of depression for young adults. These associations were stronger for those in a current relationship. This study highlights the importance of sexual satisfaction as a modifying factor against mental health problems, especially in the context of a current romantic relationshipThis research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Business (grant number PSI2013-46830-P) and Regional Ministry of Education of Castile and Leon, in Spain (grant number SA081A11-1

This paper aims to show the first study of the epitaphium sepulcrale of Alfonso X’s heart made up of an epigraphic methodology that answers the questions yet unresolved about its authenticity and the process of elaboration of this inscription. In addition, we historically contextualize the work to know the reasons that determined its creation and the political and symbolic use of it to transform a sacred space, the main altar of the Cathedral of Murcia, into a space of power reserved for the monarchy.

Recognition of Emotional States from EEG Signals with Nonlinear Regularity- and Predictability-Based Entropy Metrics

    Get PDF
Recently, the recognition of emotions with electroencephalographic (EEG) signals has received increasing attention. Furthermore, the nonstationarity of brain has intensified the application of nonlinear methods. Nonetheless, metrics like quadratic sample entropy (QSE), amplitude-aware permutation entropy (AAPE) and permutation min-entropy (PME) have never been applied to discern between more than two emotions. Therefore, this study computes for the first time QSE, AAPE and PME for recognition of four groups of emotions. After preprocessing the EEG recordings, the three entropy metrics were computed. Then, a tenfold classification approach based on a sequential forward selection scheme and a support vector machine classifier was implemented. This procedure was applied in a multi-class scheme including the four groups of study simultaneously, and in a binary-class approach for discerning emotions two by two, regarding their levels of arousal and valence. For both schemes, QSE+AAPE and QSE+PME were combined. In both multi-class and binary-class schemes, the best results were obtained in frontal and parietal brain areas. Furthermore, in most of the cases channels from QSE and AAPE/PME were selected in the classification models, thus highlighting the complementarity between those different types of entropy indices and achieving global accuracy results higher than 90% in multi-class and binary-class schemes. The combination of regularity- and predictability-based entropy indices denoted a high degree of complementarity between those nonlinear methods. Finally, the relevance of frontal and parietal areas for recognition of emotions has revealed the essential role of those brain regions in emotional processes.

A Morphometric Study of the Extraocular Muscles

    Get PDF
Extraocular muscles are important references in strabismus surgery and in placement of intraorbital devices. We analyzed extraocular muscles morphometry and possible anatomical variances of 20 orbits. We report the length, width, and points of insertion of the extraocular muscles. No anatomical variations in length, width and points of insertion were found. With regard to the rectus muscles, it was found that the superior rectus and lateral rectus are the longest muscles and that the width difference between the superior and inferior rectus is greater than that between the medial and lateral rectus and that the point of insertion of the rectus muscles has a variable morphology. The superior oblique muscle was smaller in caliber than the inferior oblique, as consistent with previous anatomical studies. Knowledge of the detailed morphology of extraocular muscles is fundamental in strabismus surgery and represents a key factor for the innovation of surgical techniques and orbital procedures

[EN] During the periods January to April, May to August, and September to December in two consecutive years, sows were assigned at breeding to receive semen doses supplemented with 87 µg cloprostenol (PG; n = 158), 5 IU oxytocin (OT; n = 154), 2 µg buserelin (GN; n = 93), or served as non-supplemented controls (CON; n = 605). Sows were inseminated at the detection of estrus, and again 24 h later, but only the first inseminations were supplemented. Compared to CON, only buserelin increased pregnancy and farrowing rates (p ≤ 0.05); there was no effect of a period or a treatment × period interaction. Litter size was larger (p ≤ 0.001) for all seminal additive groups during the first two periods and tended to increase in GN compared to CON (p ≤ 0.1) during the third period, resulting in a tendency (p < 0.1) for a period × treatment interaction. The addition of cloprostenol, oxytocin or buserelin to semen doses at first insemination increases litter size in multiparous sows.SIThis research received no external fundin
