Editorial: Physiological Impacts of Global Warming in Aquatic Organisms

    Get PDF
Climate change is reshaping our planet.Warming surface waters, acidification, and deoxygenation are the most critical effects of climate change in aquatic environments. Increasing mean water temperatures modify species distribution, alters their basal metabolic rates, the occurrence and intensity of marine diseases, and the timing of pivotal biological events, among others. Ocean acidification results in physiological stress and inhibits the growth and calcification of endo- and exo-skeletons, while ocean deoxygenation, and particularly hypoxic events, may alter the distribution, aerobic scope, and survival of organisms (Reid et al., 2019). As climate change is projected to continue over this century and beyond, it is expected that the above-mentioned stressors will be intensified, further altering the structure, and functioning of marine ecosystems (Benedetti et al., 2021). Understanding and predicting the effects of climate change is one of the most pressing challenges in marine science, since this knowledge has an impact on fisheries, aquaculture, conservation, and applied ecology. Under this scenario, this Research Topic was conceived for updating and increasing the knowledge of ocean water rise on the biology and physiology of aquatic species, resulting in a Research Topic of four works on crustaceans, fish, and phytoplankton.Versión del edito

Interactive Terrain Simulation and Force Distribution Models in Sand Piles

    Get PDF
This paper presents an application of Cellular Automata in the field of dry Granular Systems modelling. While the study of granular systems is not a recent field, no efficient models exist, from a computational point of view, in classical methodologies. Some previous works showed that the use of Cellular Automata is suitable for the development of models that can be used in real time applications. This paper extends the existing Cellular Automata models in order to make them interactive. A model for the reaction to external forces and a pressure distribution model are presented and analyzed, with numerical examples and simulations

Modelling and simulation of several interacting cellular automata

    Get PDF
Cellular Automata are used for modelling and simulation of many systems. In some applications, the system is formed by a set of subsystems that can be modelled separately, but, in such cases, the existence of interactions between these subsystems requires additional modelling and computer programming. In this paper we propose a modelling methodology for the simulation of a set of Cellular Automata models that interact with each other. The modelling methodology is described, together with an insight on implementation details. Also, it is applied to a particular Cellular Automata model, the Sanpile Model, to illustrate its use and to obtain some example simulations

Innovation in Early music festivals. domains, strategies and outcomes

    Get PDF
This chapter takes an in-depth look at innovation in cultural festivals, in particular in early music festivals, which is a type of festival aimed at a generally local and minority audience. It identifies and analyses types of innovations, the strategies used by early music festivals to innovate and the results of these innovations in the framework of a collaboration with the European Early Music Network, whose members, festival directors, agreed to participate in the survey designed for this purpose. Different types of product, production and pre-production process, marketing and communication innovations are identified but also maintain traditional products and communication channels for their most loyal audience. The analysis shows that early music festivals engage in a range of innovations and employ a meaningful combination of innovation strategies with diverse stakeholders. Innovation efforts have led to several intangible and tangible improvements, including increased prestige and bigger and more diverse audiences. Although some of the innovations identified are common to other cultural festivals, many product innovations depend on musicology research; therefore, similar to other science-based sectors, relationships with researchers are very important

    Computer Animation to teach interpolation

    Get PDF
While mathematics courses are a basic topic in engineering studies, they are often considered as a dif- cult subject by students. In this work we present a learning experience based on computer animation and using the perspective of mathematical modelling. Our goal is to provide the students with a context that motivates the study of function interpolation. We present a problem statement that is intended to be solved by means of the Modeling Cycle. The development of the activity and the strategies identi ed during the process are presented and discussed

    Texture advection on discontinuous flows

    Get PDF
Texture advection techniques, which transport textures using a velocity field, are used to visualize the dynamics of a flow on a triangle mesh. Some flow phenomena lead to velocity fields with discontinuities that cause the deformation of the texture which is not properly controlled by these techniques. We propose a method to detect and visualize discontinuities on a flow, keeping consistent texture advection at both sides of the discontinuity. The method handles the possibility that the discontinuity travels across the domain of the flow with arbitrary velocity, estimating its speed with least-squares approximation. The technique is tested with different sample scenarios and with two avalanche scenes, showing that it can run at interactive rates

New Developments in Simulation-Based Harbour Crane Training

    Get PDF
This paper presents the efforts that have been made during the development of a set of harbour training simulators to improve their quality. The paper focuses on two main research lines: the improvement of complex physical systems involved in the simulation and the analysis of hardware architecture solutions. Cable-based hoist systems and bulk materials are systems present in different harbour equipment and are usually simulated with poor quality due to their complexity. In this paper physics-based models for the interactive simulation of these systems are proposed and applied to real cases. Also, different hardware simulator architectures are analysed and different approaches are proposed to the problem of choosing the devices for a simulator

Fish Microbiome Modulation and Convenient Storage of Aquafeeds When Supplemented with Vitamin K1

Vitamin K (VK) is a fat-soluble vitamin necessary for fish metabolism and health. VK stability as dietary component during aquafeed storage and its potential effect on intestinal microbiome in fish have not yet been completely elucidated. The convenient storage conditions of aquafeeds when supplemented with phylloquinone (VK1), as well as its potential effects on the gut microbiota of Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) juveniles, have been explored. Experimental feeds were formulated to contain 0, 250 and 1250 mg kg−1 of VK1 and were stored at different temperatures (4, −20 or −80 ◦C). VK stability was superior at −20 ◦C for short-term (7 days) storage, while storing at −80 ◦C was best suited for long-term storage (up to 3 months). A comparison of bacterial communities from Senegalese sole fed diets containing 0 or 1250 mg kg−1 of VK1 showed that VK1 supplementation decreased the abundance of the Vibrio, Pseudoalteromonas, and Rhodobacterace families. All these microorganisms were previously associated with poor health status in aquatic organisms. These results contribute not only to a greater understanding of the physiological effects of vitamin K, particularly through fish intestinal microbiome, but also establish practical guidelines in the industry for proper aquafeed storage when supplemented with VK1
