Nefs d’Or, Nefs d’Argent Between Space and Power

    Get PDF
The so-called nefs were an important ‘presence’ in the European courts starting from the Late Middle Ages. They were precious miniature ships, shown during banquets held in the halls of the nobility. In addition to delighting the sight of diners thanks to their ornamental richness, they were used as containers of spices, drinks, or luxury silverware. The preciousness of the vessel and of its content were just some of the elements that determined the function of ostentation of power through the nefs. Taking into consideration sources and examples ranging from the fourteenth century to the early sixteenth century, the purpose of this contribution is to investigate both the spatial relationships in the practices of use of the object and those intrinsic to the object itself. The main trajectories of analysis refer to three spatial relationships: that of container and content, that of long-distance travel embedded in the object, and the geography of power in noble banqueting rituals. These spatial relationships reflect power relationships that will be investigated on a case-by-case basis in the course of our study

Questa indagine si prefigge di esplorare questo rapporto in diversi contesti socio-culturali del Mediterraneo arricchendo l’analisi tramite una comparazione tra la censura post-tridentina sul motivo e la ripresa del tema nell’impero mughal tra il secolo XVI ed il XVII.Exploring the incredible success and diffusion of the Nursing Madonna motif from an historical, anthropological and artistic point of view, this paper aims to investigate the political dynamics associated with the motif itself and the devotion related to it. The Nursing Madonna motif is a useful point of access to see which symbolic horizons, especially those linked to corporeity, are activated in the difficult relationship between the power élites and popular culture in establishing political legitimacy. This investigation aims at exploring this relationship in different socio-cultural contexts of the Mediterranean by enriching the analysis through a comparison between the post-Tridentine censorship on the motif and the revival of the theme in the Mughal empire between the 16th and 17th centuries

Presented as a poster at 2020 IUSM Education Day.In 2016 IUSM Faculty Steering Committee tasked the Ad-hoc Student Success Committee to explore medical student success and factors that impact academic success at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). The committee identified that the most important early predicator of success, at IUSM, was student performance in the first year and they went further to make recommendations. Among the five recommendations made was, adopting a Head Start Summer Prep Session which led to the pilot of a Pre-Matriculation program in July 2019. A one-week pre-matriculation program was piloted for newly admitted first year students and the impact of the program on student success in the first semester was assessed. The program sought to take a broader approach by seeking to expose students to what to expect in first year medical school courses; instilling good study habits, beginning the development of social networks, while at the same time emphasizing wellness

Managing apathy among people with dementia living in institutional settings: Staff's perceived gap between common and best practices

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to explore how staff manage apathy involving a person living with dementia (PLWD). Forty-two staff members working in four Spanish long-term care facilities were interviewed; 21 were nursing assistants and 21 technical staff. They read a vignette about a PLWD presenting apathy. Participants were asked (1) how a situation like that is commonly managed, and (2) how it should be managed. Responses were content-analyzed. Most participants (88.1%) mentioned having experienced a situation similar to the one described in the vignette. Behavior-focused strategies and person-centered strategies were the most frequently mentioned. As for best practices, person-centered strategies emerged as the preferred alternative, and technical staff mentioned them more frequently than assistant carers. Our findings stress the importance of organizational guidelines and staff development in the management of apathy in PLWD

Identification and functional analysis of novel phosphorylation sites in the RNA surveillance protein Upf1.

One third of inherited genetic diseases are caused by mRNAs harboring premature termination codons as a result of nonsense mutations. These aberrant mRNAs are degraded by the Nonsense-Mediated mRNA Decay (NMD) pathway. A central component of the NMD pathway is Upf1, an RNA-dependent ATPase and helicase. Upf1 is a known phosphorylated protein, but only portions of this large protein have been examined for phosphorylation sites and the functional relevance of its phosphorylation has not been elucidated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Using tandem mass spectrometry analyses, we report the identification of 11 putative phosphorylated sites in S. cerevisiae Upf1. Five of these phosphorylated residues are located within the ATPase and helicase domains and are conserved in higher eukaryotes, suggesting a biological significance for their phosphorylation. Indeed, functional analysis demonstrated that a small carboxy-terminal motif harboring at least three phosphorylated amino acids is important for three Upf1 functions: ATPase activity, NMD activity and the ability to promote translation termination efficiency. We provide evidence that two tyrosines within this phospho-motif (Y-738 and Y-742) act redundantly to promote ATP hydrolysis, NMD efficiency and translation termination fidelity

Infection importation: a key challenge to malaria elimination on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea.

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: The impact of importation of falciparum malaria from mainland Equatorial Guinea on malaria infection in non-travellers and travellers on Bioko Island was examined. METHODS: Malaria indicator surveys were conducted in 2013 and 2014 to assess the association between malaria infection and travel to the mainland. Infection in non-travellers was compared in neighbourhoods of high travel and neighbourhoods of low travel. Boat passengers leaving from and arriving on the island were tested for infection. RESULTS: Children who had travelled to the mainland in the previous eight weeks were at greater risk of infection than those who had not travelled (56 vs 26% in 2013; 42 vs 18% in 2014). Children who had not travelled, living in localities with the highest proportion of travellers, were significantly more likely to be infected compared to those in localities with the smallest proportion of travellers (adjusted odds ratios 7.7 (95% CI 2.3-25) and 5.3 (95% CI 2.5-11) in 2013 and 2014, respectively). Infection in arriving boat passengers was substantially higher than in those departing (70 vs 38%, p = 0.017). DISCUSSION: Malaria importation by travellers poses a serious public health challenge affecting non-travellers as well as travellers

miR-125b Acts as a Tumor Suppressor in Breast Tumorigenesis via Its Novel Direct Targets ENPEP, CK2-α, CCNJ, and MEGF9

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in diverse biological processes and are emerging as key regulators of tumorigenesis and tumor progression. To explore the dysregulation of miRNAs in breast cancer, a genome-wide expression profiling of 939 miRNAs was performed in 50 breast cancer patients. A total of 35 miRNAs were aberrantly expressed between breast cancer tissue and adjacent normal breast tissue and several novel miRNAs were identified as potential oncogenes or tumor suppressor miRNAs in breast tumorigenesis. miR-125b exhibited the largest decrease in expression. Enforced miR-125b expression in mammary cells decreased cell proliferation by inducing G2/M cell cycle arrest and reduced anchorage-independent cell growth of cells of mammary origin. miR-125b was found to perform its tumor suppressor function via the direct targeting of the 3'-UTRs of ENPEP, CK2-alpha, CCNJ, and MEGF9 mRNAs. Silencing these miR-125b targets mimicked the biological effects of miR-125b overexpression, confirming that they are modulated by miR-125b. Analysis of ENPEP, CK2-alpha, CCNJ, and MEGF9 protein expression in breast cancer patients revealed that they were overexpressed in 56%, 40-56%, 20%, and 32% of the tumors, respectively. The expression of ENPEP and CK2-alpha was inversely correlated with miR-125b expression in breast tumors, indicating the relevance of these potential oncogenic proteins in breast cancer patients. Our results support a prognostic role for CK2-alpha, whose expression may help clinicians predict breast tumor aggressiveness. In particular, our results show that restoration of miR-125b expression or knockdown of ENPEP, CK2-alpha, CCNJ, or MEGF9 may provide novel approaches for the treatment of breast cancer
