Cross correlations of Frank sequences and Chu Sequences.
Sets of Frank sequences and Chu sequences are two classes of polyphase sequence with ideal periodic autocorrelation functions, which at the same time have optimum crosscorrelation functions. The authors consider the crosscorrelations of sets of combined Frank/Chu sequences, which contain a larger number of sequences than either of the two constituent sets. It is shown analytically that the crosscorrelations are similar to those of the original sets with one exception, while the autocorrelations remain perfectly impulsiv
Refining grain structure and porosity of an aluminium alloy with intensive melt shearing
The official published version of the article can be obtained at the link below.Intensive melt shearing was achieved using a twin-screw machine to condition an aluminium alloy prior to solidification. The results show that intensive melt shearing has a significant grain-refining effect. In addition, the intensive melt shearing reduces both the volume fraction and the size of porosity. It can reduce the density index from 10.50% to 2.87% and the average size of porosity in the samples solidified under partial vacuum from around 1 mm to 100 ÎŒm.Financial support was obtained from the EPSRC and the Technology Strategy Board
Home country effects of offshoring. A critical survey on empirical literature.
The International fragmentation of production processes is of rising importance. One part of this fragmentation involves the relocation of a production process from a home- to a new host country. This literature survey deals with the effects of such relocations on the home country. First of all, we try to conceptualize the terms and definitions most frequently used in this context which are "outsourcing", "offshore outsourcing" and "offshoring". Despite the fact that there is little textual documentation dealing directly with the phenomena of offshoring and offshore outsourcing we try to give an overview of possible empirical literature to which one can regard to. Including FDI literature we try to cover empirical literature which can provide helpful insight on the effects of a relocation to foreign countries on the home country in connection with wages, skill upgrading, prices, profits, taxes and unions. p22phox C242T Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism Inhibits Inflammatory Oxidative Damage to Endothelial Cells and Vessels.
BACKGROUND: The NADPH oxidase, by generating reactive oxygen species, is involved in the pathophysiology of many cardiovascular diseases and represents a therapeutic target for the development of novel drugs. A single-nucleotide polymorphism, C242T of the p22(phox) subunit of NADPH oxidase, has been reported to be negatively associated with coronary heart disease and may predict disease prevalence. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: With the use of computer molecular modeling, we discovered that C242T single-nucleotide polymorphism causes significant structural changes in the extracellular loop of p22(phox) and reduces its interaction stability with Nox2 subunit. Gene transfection of human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells showed that C242T p22(phox) significantly reduced Nox2 expression but had no significant effect on basal endothelial O2 (.-) production or the expression of Nox1 and Nox4. When cells were stimulated with tumor necrosis factor-α (or high glucose), C242T p22(phox) significantly inhibited tumor necrosis factor-α-induced Nox2 maturation, O2 (.-) production, mitogen-activated protein kinases and nuclear factor ÎșB activation, and inflammation (all P<0.05). These C242T effects were further confirmed using p22(phox) short-hairpin RNA-engineered HeLa cells and Nox2(-/-) coronary microvascular endothelial cells. Clinical significance was investigated by using saphenous vein segments from non-coronary heart disease subjects after phlebotomies. TT (C242T) allele was common (prevalence of â22%) and, in comparison with CC, veins bearing TT allele had significantly lower levels of Nox2 expression and O2 (.-) generation in response to high-glucose challenge. CONCLUSIONS: C242T single-nucleotide polymorphism causes p22(phox) structural changes that inhibit endothelial Nox2 activation and oxidative response to tumor necrosis factor-α or high-glucose stimulation. C242T single-nucleotide polymorphism may represent a natural protective mechanism against inflammatory cardiovascular diseases
Improved precision with Hologic Apex software.
UnlabelledThe precision of Hologic Apex v2.0 analysis software is significantly improved from Hologic Delphi v11.2 software and is comparable to GE Lunar Prodigy v7.5 software. Apex and Delphi precisions were, respectively, 1.0% vs. 1.2% (L1-L4 spine), 1.l % vs. 1.3% (total femur), 1.6% vs. 1.9% (femoral neck), and 0.7% vs. 0.9% (dual total femur).IntroductionPrecision of bone mineral density (BMD) measurements by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is known to vary by manufacturer, model, and technologist. This study evaluated the precision of three analysis versions: Apex v2.0 and Delphi v11.2 (Hologic, Inc.), and Prodigy v7.5 (GE Healthcare, Inc.) independent of technologist skill.MethodsDuplicate spine and dual hip scans on 90 women were acquired on both Delphi and Prodigy DXA systems at three clinics. BMD measures were converted to standardized BMD (sBMD) units. Precision errors were described as a root-mean-square (RMS) standard deviations and RMS percent coefficients of variation across the population.ResultsApex and Delphi values were highly correlated (r ranged from 0.90 to 0.99). Excluding the right neck, the Apex precision error was found to be 20% to 25% lower than the Delphi (spine: 1.0% versus 1.2% (p < 0.05), total hip: 1.1% versus 1.3% (p < 0.05), right neck: 2.3% versus 2.6% (p > 0.1)). No statistically significant differences were found in the precision error of the Apex and Prodigy (p > 0.05) except for the right neck (2.3% versus 1.8% respectively, p = 0.03).ConclusionThe Apex software has significantly lower precision error compared to Delphi software with similar mean values, and similar precision to that of the Prodigy
Strategic Outsourcing: Evidence from the British Companies
Outsourcing has become an increasingly popular option for many organisations. But they vary in terms of activities being outsourced, reasons for and benefits from outsourcing, and how the decision was made. This article presents an empirical research on fourteen companies. It found out, a) in most cases it was the âperipheralâ support activity being outsourced with cost reduction as the primary driver; b) outsourcing decision was being made early in the process without active involvement of the in-house provider; and c) there were problems in supplier selection and management. The research identified pre-outsourcing decision process and post-outsourcing management as the two key areas that gave cause for concern, and offered recommendations for improvement
Timing Features of the Accretion--driven Millisecond X-Ray Pulsar XTE J1807--294 in 2003 March Outburst
In order to probe the activity of the inner disk flow and its effect on the
neutron star surface emissions, we carried out the timing analysis of the Rossi
X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of the millisecond X-ray pulsar XTE
J1807--294, focusing on its correlated behaviors in X-ray intensities, hardness
ratios, pulse profiles and power density spectra. The source was observed to
have a serial of broad "puny" flares on a timescale of hours to days on the top
of a decaying outburst in March 2003. In the flares, the spectra are softened
and the pulse profiles become more sinusoidal. The frequency of kilohertz
quasi-periodic oscillation (kHz QPO) is found to be positively related to the
X-ray count rate in the flares. These features observed in the flares could be
due to the accreting flow inhomogeneities. It is noticed that the fractional
pulse amplitude increases with the flare intensities in a range of , comparable to those observed in the thermonuclear bursts of the
millisecond X-ray pulsar XTE J1814--338, whereas it remains at about 6.5% in
the normal state. Such a significant variation of the pulse profile in the
"puny" flares may reflect the changes of physical parameters in the inner disk
accretion region. Furthermore, we noticed an overall positive correlation
between the kHz QPO frequency and the fractional pulse amplitude, which could
be the first evidence representing that the neutron-star surface emission
properties are very sensitive to the disk flow inhomogeneities. This effect

A sample of radio-loud QSOs at redshift ~ 4
We obtained spectra of 60 red, starlike objects (E< 18.8) identified with
FIRST radio sources, S_{1.4GHz} > 1 mJy. Eight are QSOs with redshift z>
3.6.Combined with our pilot search (Benn et al 2002), our sample of 121
candidates yields a total of 18 z > 3.6 QSOs (10 of these with z > 4.0). 8% of
candidates with S_{1.4GHz} 10
mJy are QSOs with z > 3.6. The surface density of E 1mJy,
z> 4 QSOs is 0.003 deg^{-2}. This is currently the only well-defined sample of
radio-loud QSOs at z ~ 4 selected independently of radio spectral index. The
QSOs are highly luminous in the optical (8 have M_B < -28, q_0 = 0.5, H_0 = 50
kms^{-1}Mpc^{-1}). The SEDs are as varied as those seen in optical searches for
high-redshift QSOs, but the fraction of objects with weak (strongly
self-absorbed) Ly alpha emission is marginally higher (3 out of 18) than for
