Localized patterns and hole solutions in one-dimension extended sytem
The existence, stability properties, and bifurcation diagrams of localized
patterns and hole solutions in one-dimensional extended systems is studied from
the point of view of front interactions. An adequate envelope equation is
derived from a prototype model that exhibits these particle-type solutions.
This equation allow us to obtain an analytical expression for the front
interaction, which is in good agreement with numerical simulations.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Localized states in bistable pattern forming systems
We present an unifying description of a new class of localized states, appearing as large amplitude peaks nucleating over a pattern of lower amplitude. Localized states are pinned over a lattice spontaneously generated by the system itself. We show that the phenomenon is generic and requires only the coexistence of two spatially periodic states. At the onset of the spatial bifurcation, a forced amplitude equation is derived for the critical modes, which accounts for the appearance of localized peak
Statistics of injected power on a bouncing ball subjected to a randomly vibrating piston
International audienceWe present an experimental study on the statistical properties of the injected power needed to maintain an inelastic ball bouncing constantly on a randomly accelerating piston in the presence of gravity. We compute the injected power at each collision of the ball with the moving piston by measuring the velocity of the piston and the force exerted on the piston by the ball. The probability density function of the injected power has its most probable value close to zero and displays two asymmetric exponential tails, depending on the restitution coefficient, the piston acceleration, and its frequency content. This distribution can be deduced from a simple model assuming quasi-Gaussian statistics for the force and velocity of the piston
Fluctuations of energy flux in a simple dissipative out-of-equilibrium system
We report the statistical properties of the fluctuations of the energy flux
in an electronic RC circuit driven with a stochastic voltage. The fluctuations
of the power injected in the circuit are measured as a function of the damping
rate and the forcing parameters. We show that its distribution exhibits a cusp
close to zero and two asymmetric exponential tails, the asymmetry being driven
by the mean dissipation. This simple experiment allows to capture the
qualitative features of the energy flux distribution observed in more complex
dissipative systems. We also show that the large fluctuations of injected power
averaged on a time lag do not verify the Fluctuation Theorem even for long
averaging time. This is in contrast with the findings of previous experiments
due to their small range of explored fluctuation amplitude. The injected power
in a system of N components either correlated or not is also studied to mimic
systems with large number of particles, such as in a dilute granular gas.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev.
Fluctuations of energy flux in wave turbulence
We report that the power driving gravity and capillary wave turbulence in a
statistically stationary regime displays fluctuations much stronger than its
mean value. We show that its probability density function (PDF) has a most
probable value close to zero and involves two asymmetric roughly exponential
tails. We understand the qualitative features of the PDF using a simple
Langevin type model.Comment: submitted to PR

Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries
Abstract
Background
Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres.
Methods
This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries.
Results
In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia.
Conclusion
This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries
ACCOUNTING REGULATION FOR NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS IN ITALY AND SPAIN: TOWARDS AN EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVE
The paper present the nonprofit entities accounting regulation in Italy and in Spain in an european perspective. After a presentation of activities of nonprofit entities and difference in their governance, the paper presents the accounting regulation for nonprofit entities in Italy (Raccomandandazione sul rendiconto delle aziende nonprofit della Commissione Aziende Nonprofit del Consiglio Nazionale dei Dottori Commercialisti) and in Spain (Plan General de Contabilidad - Adapataciones para fundaciones de competencia estatal y asosciaciones declaradas de utilidad publica por Istitudo Central de Auditoria y Contabilidad) and compare the two regulations. The paper substinues the need for an Europea framework
