Impedimetric antimicrobial peptide-based sensor for the early detection of periodontopathogenic bacteria

Peri-implantitis, an inflammation caused by biofilm formation, constitutes a major cause of implant failure in dentistry. Thus, the detection of bacteria at the early steps of biofilm growth represents a powerful strategy to prevent implant-related infections. In this regard, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) can be used as effective biological recognition elements to selectively detect the presence of bacteria. Thus, the aim of the present study was to combine the use of miniaturized and integrated impedimetric transducers and AMPs to obtain biosensors with high sensitivity to monitor bacterial colonization. Streptococcus sanguinis, which is one of the most prevalent strains in the onset of periodontal diseases, was used as a model of oral bacteria. To this end, a potent AMP derived from human lactoferrin was synthesized and covalently immobilized on interdigitated electrode arrays (IDEA). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were employed to optimize and characterize the method of immobilization. Noteworthy, the interaction of Streptococcus sanguinis with AMP-coated sensors provoked significant changes in the impedance spectra, which were univocally associated with the presence of bacteria, proving the feasibility of our method. In this regard, the developed biosensor permits to detect the presence of bacteria at concentrations starting from 101 colony forming units (CFU) mL-1 in KCl and from 102 CFU mL-1 in artificial saliva. Moreover, the system was devoid of cytotoxicity for human fibroblasts. These results indicate that the proposed approach can be effective in the detection of initial stages of biofilm formation, and may be useful in the early prevention and treatment of peri-implantitisPeer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Investigation on the Luminescence Properties of InMO4 (M = V5+, Nb5+, Ta5+) Crystals Doped with Tb3+ or Yb3+ Rare Earth Ions

We explore the potential of Tb- and Yb-doped InVO4, InTaO4, and InNbO4 for applications as phosphors for light-emitting sources. Doping below 0.2% barely change the crystal structure and Raman spectrum but provide optical excitation and emission properties in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) spectral regions. From optical measurements, the energy of the first/second direct band gaps was determined to be 3.7/4.1 eV in InVO4, 4.7/5.3 in InNbO4, and 5.6/6.1 eV in InTaO4. In the last two cases, these band gaps are larger than the fundamental band gap (being indirect gap materials), while for InVO4, a direct band gap semiconductor, the fundamental band gap is at 3.7 eV. As a consequence, this material shows a strong self-activated photoluminescence centered at 2.2 eV. The other two materials have a weak self-activated signal at 2.2 and 2.9 eV. We provide an explanation for the origin of these signals taking into account the analysis of the polyhedral coordination around the pentavalent cations (V, Nb, and Ta). Finally, the characteristic green (D-5(4) -> F-7(J)) and NIR (F-2(5/2) -> F-2(7/2)) emissions of Tb3+ and Yb3+ have been analyzed and explained

Three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography of the atrial septal defects

    Get PDF
Transesophageal echocardiography has advantages over transthoracic technique in defining morphology of atrial structures. Even though real time three-dimensional echocardiographic imaging is a reality, the off-line reconstruction technique usually allows to obtain higher spatial resolution images. The purpose of this study was to explore the accuracy of off-line three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography in a spectrum of atrial septal defects by comparing them with representative anatomic specimens

    Lineability within probability theory settings

[EN] The search of lineability consists on finding large vector spaces of mathematical objects with special properties. Such examples have arisen in the last years in a wide range of settings such as in real and complex analysis, sequence spaces, linear dynamics, norm-attaining functionals, zeros of polynomials in Banach spaces, Dirichlet series, and non-convergent Fourier series, among others. In this paper we present the novelty of linking this notion of lineability to the area of Probability Theory by providing positive (and negative) results within the framework of martingales, random variables, and certain stochastic processes. This work was partially supported by Ministerio de Educacion, Cultura y Deporte, projects MTM2013-47093-P and MTM2015-65825-P, by the Basque Government through the BERC 2014-2017 program and by the Spanish Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad: BCAM Severo Ochoa excellence accreditation SEV-2013-0323.Conejero, JA.; Fenoy, M.; Murillo Arcila, M.; Seoane Sepúlveda, JB.
