The neutrino ground state in a neutron star
We address a recent claim that the stability of neutron stars implies a lower
bound on the mass of the neutrino. We argue that the result obtained by some
previous authors is due to an improper summation of an infrared-sensitive
series and that a non-perturbative "resummation" of the series yields a finite
and well-behaved result. The stability of neutron stars thus gives no lower
bound on the mass of the neutrino.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Latex (uses espcrc2.sty); contribution to the

Optimal Hemodialysis Prescription: Do Children Need More Than a Urea Dialysis Dose?
When prescribing hemodialysis in children, the clinician should first establish an adequate regimen, before seeking to optimize the treatment (Fischbach et al. 2005). A complete dialysis dose should consist of a urea dialysis dose and a determined convective volume. Intensified and more frequent dialysis regimens should not be considered exclusively as rescue therapy. Interestingly, a recent single-center study demonstrated that frequent on-line HDF provides an optimal dialysis prescription, both in terms of blood pressure control (and therefore avoidance of left ventricular hypertrophy), and catch-up growth, that is, no malnutrition or cachexia and less resistance to growth hormone. Nevertheless, this one-center experience would benefit from a prospective randomized study

Autologous adipocyte graft in endoscopic treatment of vesico-renal reflux in children: a preliminary study
No bulking agent is ideal for endoscopically treating vesico-renal reflux in children. Many teams have tried to find a safe and efficient material, ideally an autologous material. We describe here a protocol for the use of autologous viable fat in the treatment of primary vesico-renal reflux in children aged from 3 to 15 years. Fat harvesting was done from the medial side of the thigh by manual aspiration. Samples were centrifuged to purify the graft from blood and lipid. Lastly fat was injected beneath the pathologic ureter by a conventional endoscopic technique. A voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) closed the procedure. Follow-up included renal ultrasonography the day after surgery, and one and three months later. A VCUG was performed systematically at three months and, in cases of acute pyelonephritis, during the survey
Peritoneal dialysis prescription in children: bedside principles for optimal practice
There is no unique optimal peritoneal dialysis prescription for all children, although the goals of ultrafiltration and blood purification are universal. In turn, a better understanding of the physiology of the peritoneal membrane, as a dynamic dialysis membrane with an exchange surface area recruitment capacity and unique permeability characteristics, results in the transition from an empirical prescription process based on clinical experience alone to the potential for a personalized prescription with individually adapted fill volumes and dwell times. In all cases, the prescribed exchange fill volume should be scaled for body surface area (ml/m2), and volume enhancement should be conducted based on clinical tolerance and intraperitoneal pressure measurements (IPP; cmH2O). The exchange dwell times should be determined individually and adapted to the needs of the patient, with particular attention to phosphate clearance and ultrafiltration capacity. The evolution of residual kidney function and the availability of new, more physiologic, peritoneal dialysis fluids (PDFs) also influence the prescription process. An understanding of all of these principles is integral to the provision of clinically optimal PD
Nuclear Parity-Violation in Effective Field Theory
We reformulate the analysis of nuclear parity-violation (PV) within the
framework of effective field theory (EFT). To order Q, the PV nucleon-nucleon
(NN) interaction depends on five a priori unknown constants that parameterize
the leading-order, short-range four-nucleon operators. When pions are included
as explicit degrees of freedom, the potential contains additional medium- and
long-range components parameterized by PV piNN couplings. We derive the form of
the corresponding one- and two-pion-exchange potentials. We apply these
considerations to a set of existing and prospective PV few-body measurements
that may be used to determine the five independent low-energy constants
relevant to the pionless EFT and the additional constants associated with
dynamical pions. We also discuss the relationship between the conventional
meson-exchange framework and the EFT formulation, and argue that the latter
provides a more general and systematic basis for analyzing nuclear PV.Comment: 67 Page Latex file with typos correcte
