    On the consistency of the three-dimensional noncommutative supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

    We study the one-loop quantum corrections to the U(N) noncommutative supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in three spacetime dimensions (NCSYM3_3). We show that the cancellation of the dangerous UV/IR infrared divergences only takes place in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. Furthermore, in the one-loop approximation, the would be subleading UV and UV/IR infrared divergences are shown to vanish.Comment: 8 pages and 2 figure

    Persistent currents in mesoscopic rings with a quantum dot

    Using the Anderson model in the Kondo regime, we calculate the persistent current j in a ring with an embedded quantum dot (QD) as a function of the Aharonov-Bohm flux Phi for different ring length L, temperature T and broadening of the conduction states delta . For T=delta =0 and L >> xi, where xi is the Kondo screening length, Lj tends to the value for a non interacting ideal ring, while it is suppressed for a side coupled QD.     Determinant representation for some transition probabilities in the TASEP with second class particles

    We study the transition probabilities for the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) on the infinite integer lattice with a finite, but arbitrary number of first and second class particles. Using the Bethe ansatz we present an explicit expression of these quantities in terms of the Bethe wave function. In a next step it is proved rigorously that this expression can be written in a compact determinantal form for the case where the order of the first and second class particles does not change in time. An independent geometrical approach provides insight into these results and enables us to generalize the determinantal solution to the multi-class TASEP.Comment: Minor revision; journal reference adde

    Electron neutrino tagging through tertiary lepton detection

    We discuss an experimental technique aimed at tagging electron neutrinos in multi-GeV artificial sources on an event-by-event basis. It exploits in a novel manner calorimetric and tracking technologies developed in the framework of the LHC experiments and of rare kaon decay searches. The setup is suited for slow-extraction, moderate power beams and it is based on an instrumented decay tunnel equipped with tagging units that intercept secondary and tertiary leptons from the bulk of undecayed \pi^+ and protons. We show that the taggers are able to reduce the \nue contamination originating from K_e3 decays by about one order of magnitude. Only a limited suppression (~60%) is achieved for \nue produced by the decay-in-flight of muons; for low beam powers, similar performance as for K_e3 can be reached supplementing the tagging system with an instrumented beam dump.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures; minor changes, version to appear in EPJ

    Levels of trans-aconitic, malic, malonic and succinic acids were measured in sugarcane juice from three varieties in four maturity stages. Trans-aconitic acid represented about 84% of the total organic acids analysed in sugarcane juice followed by malic acid with 14%. Oxalic, glutaric, alpha-ketoglutaric and citric acids were found in levels lower than 1% of total organic acids. The content of trans-aconitic, malic and succinic acids decreased with the stage of maturity while malonic acid increased. No significant differences were observed among the varieties studied in relation to trans-aconitic acid content.Os teores dos ácidos trans-aconítico, málico, malônico e succínico foram determinados no caldo de cana das variedades IAC 58-480, RB 73-5275 e NA 56-79, em quatro estádios de maturidade (11, 12, 13 e 14 meses). O ácido trans-aconítico constituiu cerca de 84% do total dos ácidos orgânicos seguido pelo ácido málico com 14%. Os ácidos oxálico, glutárico, alfa-cetoglutárico e cítrico foram encontrados em níveis inferiores a 1%. Os níveis dos ácidos succínico, málico e trans-aconítico diminuíram com a maturidade da planta enquanto os de malônico aumentaram. Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre as variedades estudadas em relação aos teores de ácido trans-aconítico

    Physical Unitarity for Massive Non-abelian Gauge Theories in the Landau Gauge: Stueckelberg and Higgs

    We discuss the problem of unitarity for Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge with a mass term a la Stueckelberg. We assume that the theory (non-renormalizable) makes sense in some subtraction scheme (in particular the Slavnov-Taylor identities should be respected!) and we devote the paper to the study of the space of the unphysical modes. We find that the theory is unitary only under the hypothesis that the 1-PI two-point function of the vector mesons has no poles (at p^2=0). This normalization condition might be rather crucial in the very definition of the theory. With all these provisos the theory is unitary. The proof of unitarity is given both in a form that allows a direct transcription in terms of Feynman amplitudes (cutting rules) and in the operatorial form. The same arguments and conclusions apply verbatim to the case of non-abelian gauge theories where the mass of the vector meson is generated via Higgs mechanism. To the best of our knowledge, there is no mention in the literature on the necessary condition implied by physical unitarity.Comment: References added. 22 pages.     Interaction between Kondo impurities in a quantum corral

    We calculate the spectral densities for two impurities inside an elliptical quantum corral using exact diagonalization in the relevant Hilbert subspace and embedding into the rest of the system. For one impurity, the space and energy dependence of the change in differential conductance Δ=dI/dV\Delta = dI/dV observed in the quantum mirage experiment is reproduced. In presence of another impurity, Δ=dI/dV\Delta = dI/dV is very sensitive to the hybridization between impurity and bulk. The impurities are correlated ferromagnetically between them. A hopping 0.15\gtrsim 0.15 eV between impurities destroy the Kondo resonance.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
