Grobner Bases for Finite-temperature Quantum Computing and their Complexity
Following the recent approach of using order domains to construct Grobner
bases from general projective varieties, we examine the parity and
time-reversal arguments relating de Witt and Lyman's assertion that all path
weights associated with homotopy in dimensions d <= 2 form a faithful
representation of the fundamental group of a quantum system. We then show how
the most general polynomial ring obtained for a fermionic quantum system does
not, in fact, admit a faithful representation, and so give a general
prescription for calcluating Grobner bases for finite temperature many-body
quantum system and show that their complexity class is BQP
A study of the remarkable galaxy system AM 546-324 (the core of Abell S0546)
We report first results of an investigation of the tidally disturbed galaxy
system AM\,546-324, whose two principal galaxies 2MFGC 04711 and AM\,0546-324
(NED02) were previously classified as interacting doubles. This system was
selected to study the interaction of ellipticals in a moderately dense
environment. We provide spectral characteristics of the system and present an
observational study of the interaction effects on the morphology, kinematics,
and stellar population of these galaxies. The study is based on long-slit
spectrophotometric data in the range of 4500-8000 obtained with
the Gemini Multi-Object Spetrograph at Gemini South (GMOS-S). We have used the
stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT to investigate the star formation
history of these galaxies. The Gemini/GMOS-S direct r-G0303 broad band pointing
image was used to enhance and study fine morphological structures. The main
absorption lines in the spectra were used to determine the radial velocity.
Along the whole long-slit signal, the spectra of the Shadowy galaxy (discovered
by us), 2MFGC 04711, and AM\,0546-324 (NED02) resemble that of an early-type
galaxy. We estimated redshifts of z= 0.0696, z= 0.0693 and z= 0.0718,
corresponding to heliocentric velocities of 20\,141 km s, 20\,057 km
s, and 20\,754 km s for the Shadowy galaxy, 2MFGC 04711 and
AM\,0546-324 (NED02), respectively. ..
Dark Matter and Dark Energy via Non-Perturbative (Flavour) Vacua
A non-perturbative field theoretical approach to flavour physics
(Blasone-Vitiello formalism) has been shown to imply a highly non-trivial
vacuum state. In a previous work, we implemented the approach on a simple
supersymmetric model (free Wess-Zumino), with flavour mixing, which was
regarded as a model for free neutrinos and sneutrinos. The resulting effective
vacuum (called "flavour vacuum") was found to be characterized by a strong SUSY
breaking. In this paper we explore the phenomenology of the model and we argue
that the flavour vacuum is a consistent source for both Dark Energy (thanks to
the bosonic sector of the model) and Dark Matter (via the fermionic one). Quite
remarkably, besides the parameters connected with neutrino physics, in this
model no other parameters have been introduced, possibly leading to a
predictive theory of Dark Energy/Matter. Despite its oversimplification, such a
toy model already seems capable to shed some light on the observed energy
hierarchy between neutrino physics, Dark Energy and Dark Matter. Furthermore,
we move a step forth in the construction of a more realistic theory, by
presenting a novel approach for calculating relevant quantities and hence
extending some results to interactive theories, in a completely

Galleria mellonella as an infection model to investigate virulence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus

Available from Taylor & Francis via the DOI in this recordNon-toxigenic V. parahaemolyticus isolates (tdh-/trh-/T3SS2-) have recently been isolated from patients with gastroenteritis. In this study we report that the larvae of the wax moth (Galleria mellonella) are susceptible to infection by toxigenic or non-toxigenic clinical isolates of V. parahaemolyticus. In comparison larvae inoculated with environmental isolates of V. parahaemolyticus did not succumb to disease. Whole genome sequencing of clinical non-toxigenic isolates revealed the presence of a gene encoding a nudix hydrolase, identified as mutT. A V. parahaemolyticus mutT mutant was unable to kill G. mellonella at 24Â h post inoculation, indicating a role of this gene in virulence. Our findings show that G. mellonella is a valuable model for investigating screening of possible virulence genes of V. parahaemolyticus and can provide new insights into mechanisms of virulence of atypical non-toxigenic V. parahaemolyticus. Spallation Neutron Production by 0.8, 1.2 and 1.6 GeV Protons on various Targets
Spallation neutron production in proton induced reactions on Al, Fe, Zr, W,
Pb and Th targets at 1.2 GeV and on Fe and Pb at 0.8, and 1.6 GeV measured at
the SATURNE accelerator in Saclay is reported. The experimental
double-differential cross-sections are compared with calculations performed
with different intra-nuclear cascade models implemented in high energy
transport codes. The broad angular coverage also allowed the determination of
average neutron multiplicities above 2 MeV. Deficiencies in some of the models

Whole-Body versus Local DXA-Scan for the Diagnosis of Osteoporosis in COPD Patients
Background. Osteoporosis is an extrapulmonary effect of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Diagnosis of osteoporosis is based on BMD measured by DXA-scan. The best location for BMD measurement in COPD has not been determined. Aim of this study was to assess whole-body BMD and BMD of the hip and lumbar spine (local DXA) in COPD patients and compare the prevalence of osteoporosis at these locations. Methods. Whole body as well as local DXA-scan were made in 168 COPD patients entering pulmonary rehabilitation. Patient-relevant characteristics were assessed. Prevalence of osteoporosis was determined. Characteristics of patients without osteoporosis were compared to patients with osteoporosis on local DXA. Results. A higher prevalence of osteoporosis was found using local DXA compared to whole-body DXA (39% versus 21%). One quarter of patients without osteoporosis on whole body-DXA did have osteoporosis on local DXA. Significant differences in patient characteristics between patients without osteoporosis based on both DXA measurements and patients with osteoporosis based on local DXA only were found. Conclusions. DXA of the hip and lumbar spine should be made to assess bone mineral density in COPD patients. The lowest T-score of these locations should be used to diagnose osteoporosis
Socio-economic and partner relationship factors associated with antenatal depressive morbidity among pregnant women in
Depression during pregnancy may negatively influence social functioning, birth outcomes and postnatal mental health. A cross-sectional analysis of the baseline survey of a prospective study was undertaken with an objective of determining the prevalence and socio-demographic factors associated with depressive morbidity during pregnancy in a Tanzanian peri-urban setting. Seven hundred and eighty seven second to third trimester pregnant women were recruited at booking for antenatal care at two primary health care clinics. Prenatal structured interviews assessed socio-economic, quality of partner relationships and selected physical health measures. Depressive symptoms were measured at recruitment and three and eight months postpartum using the Kiswahili version of the Hopkins Symptom Checklist. Galaxy Zoo: Mergers â Dynamical models of interacting galaxies
The dynamical history of most merging galaxies is not well understood. Correlations between galaxy interaction and star formation have been found in previous studies, but require the context of the physical history of merging systems for full insight into the processes that lead to enhanced star formation. We present the results of simulations that reconstruct the orbit trajectories and disturbed morphologies of pairs of interacting galaxies. With the use of a restricted three-body simulation code and the help of citizen scientists, we sample 105 points in parameter space for each system. We demonstrate a successful recreation of the morphologies of 62 pairs of interacting galaxies through the review of more than 3 million simulations. We examine the level of convergence and uniqueness of the dynamical properties of each system. These simulations represent the largest collection of models of interacting galaxies to date, providing a valuable resource for the investigation of mergers. This paper presents the simulation parameters generated by the project. They are now publicly available in electronic format at http://data.galaxyzoo.org/mergers.html. Though our best-fitting model parameters are not an exact match to previously published models, our method for determining uncertainty measurements will aid future comparisons between models. The dynamical clocks from our models agree with previous results of the time since the onset of star formation from starburst models in interacting systems and suggest that tidally induced star formation is triggered very soon after closest approach
'It is like a tomato stall where someone can pick what he likes': structure and practices of female sex work in Kampala, Uganda.
BACKGROUND: Effective interventions among female sex workers require a thorough knowledge of the context of local sex industries. We explore the organisation of female sex work in a low socio-economic setting in Kampala, Uganda. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study with 101 participants selected from an epidemiological cohort of 1027 women at high risk of HIV in Kampala. Repeat in-depth life history and work practice interviews were conducted from March 2010 to June 2011. Context specific factors of female sex workers' day-to-day lives were captured. Reported themes were identified and categorised inductively. RESULTS: Of the 101 women, 58 were active self-identified sex workers operating in different locations within the area of study and nine had quit sex work. This paper focuses on these 67 women who gave information about their involvement in sex work. The majority had not gone beyond primary level of education and all had at least one child. Thirty one voluntarily disclosed that they were HIV-positive. Common sex work locations were streets/roadsides, bars and night clubs. Typically sex occurred in lodges near bars/night clubs, dark alleyways or car parking lots. Overall, women experienced sex work-related challenges at their work locations but these were more apparent in outdoor settings. These settings exposed women to violence, visibility to police, a stigmatising public as well as competition for clients, while bars provided some protection from these challenges. Older sex workers tended to prefer bars while the younger ones were mostly based on the streets. Alcohol consumption was a feature in all locations and women said it gave them courage and helped them to withstand the night chill. Condom use was determined by clients' willingness, a woman's level of sobriety or price offered. CONCLUSIONS: Sex work operates across a variety of locations in the study area in Kampala, with each presenting different strategies and challenges for those operating there. Risky practices are present in all locations although they are higher on the streets compared to other locations. Location specific interventions are required to address the complex challenges in sex work environments
