    BMI and low bone mass in an elderly male nursing home population

    Little is known about osteoporosis in institutionalized older adults. Risk factors such as low body mass index (BMI) have been investigated in female populations, but remain understudied in men. The objective of this study was to examine characteristics of older men residing in a nursing home who received bone mineral density evaluations. 57 male Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) nursing home residents were screened for osteoporosis using a peripheral dual X-ray (pDXA) technique. T-scores were categorized into three groups: normal (0 > -1); osteopenic (-1 to -2.49); osteoporotic (< -2.5). Average age was 76.2 years (standard deviation = 11.5; range: 48-100). T-scores indicated that 37.3% of the population was normal, 35.6% osteopenic, and 27.1% osteoporotic. 35.6% of patients had normal BMIs, 3.4% were underweight, 47.5% were overweight, and 13.6% were considered obese. There was a high prevalence of overweight and obese individuals (61.1%) in the osteopenic and osteoporotic groups. As expected, there was a high prevalence of low bone mass in our population (62%). However, overweight and obese men were more likely to have osteoporosis and osteopenia, contrary to literature and clinical knowledge. This finding may be partially explained by the prevalence of sedentary lifestyle and relative lack of weight-bearing activity in this group of men

    Metallo-dielectric core-shell nanospheres as building blocks for optical three-dimensional isotropic negative-index metamaterials

    Materials showing electromagnetic properties that are not attainable in naturally occurring media, so-called metamaterials, have been lately, and still are, among the most active topics in optical and materials physics and engineering. Among these properties, one of the most attractive ones is the subdiffraction resolving capability predicted for media having an index of refraction of -1. Here, we propose a fully three-dimensional, isotropic metamaterial with strong electric and magnetic responses in the optical regime, based on spherical metallo-dielectric core-shell nanospheres. The magnetic response stems from the lowest, magnetic-dipole resonance of the dielectric shell with a high refractive index, and can be tuned to coincide with the plasmon resonance of the metal core, responsible for the electric response. Since the response does not originate from coupling between structures, no particular periodic arrangement needs to be imposed. Moreover, due to the geometry of the constituents, the metamaterial is intrinsically isotropic and polarization independent. It could be realized with current fabrication techniques with materials such as silver (core) and silicon or germanium (shell).     Fano-like interference of plasmon resonances at a single rod-shaped nanoantenna

    Single metallic nanorods acting as half-wave antennas in the optical range exhibit an asymmetric, multi-resonant scattering spectrum that strongly depends on both their length and dielectric properties. Here we show that such spectral features can be easily understood in terms of Fano-like interference between adjacent plasmon resonances. On the basis of analytical and numerical results for different geometries, we demonstrate that Fano resonances may appear for such single-particle nanoantennas provided that interacting resonances overlap in both spatial and frequency domains.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure

    Molecular characterization, expression and localization of a peroxiredoxin from the sheep scab mite, Psoroptes ovis

    The sheep scab mite, Psoroptes ovis, induces an intensely pruritic exudative dermatitis which is responsible for restlessness, loss of appetite and weight loss. Within the first 24 h of infection, there is a rapid inflammatory influx of eosinophils and apoptosis of the keratinocytes at the site of infection. The former cell type is capable of a sustained respiratory burst, toxic products of which may directly damage the mite and also contribute to lesion formation. Analysis of a P. ovis expressed sequence tag (EST) database identified a number of antioxidant enzyme-encoding sequences, including peroxiredoxin (thioredoxin peroxidase EC 1.11.1.15), all of which may help the mite endure the potentially toxic skin environment. A full length sequence encoding Po-TPx, a protein of 206 amino acids which showed high homology to a peroxiredoxin from the salivary gland of the tick Ixodes scapularis, was amplified from P. ovis cDNA. Recombinant Po-TPx was expressed in bacteria and antiserum to this protein was used to localize native Po-TPx in mite sections. Peroxiredoxin was localized, amongst other sites, to a subpharyngeal region in mite sections. The recombinant protein was recognized by sera from sheep infested with the mite suggesting that it may be secreted or excreted by the mite and interact with the host immune response

    Professional competences as a key factor in the didactic methodology of organizational communication

    [ES] Este estudio realiza una propuesta de metodología didáctica para las asignaturas sobre comunicación organizacional que se imparten en las Facultades de Ciencias de la Comunicación en las universidades españolas. Se utiliza el diseño de enfoque dominante o principal, en el que prevalece la Investigación Acción como método cualitativo, que favorece el cambio en los procesos educativos para la transformación social; y al que se le agrega el componente cuantitativo de la encuesta, para evaluar los resultados de la propuesta que aquí se realiza. A partir de la revisión de guías docentes y del análisis de ofertas de empleo se observa que, aunque existe correspondencia entre universidad y empresa en el reconocimiento de competencias como capacidad de análisis, redacción, edición, habilidades relacionales, estrategia y proactividad; no se enseñan habilidades relevantes que demanda el mercado laboral como el trabajo en equipo, la autonomía, el dominio del inglés y el manejo de herramientas tecn[EN] This study makes a proposal of didactic methodology for the subjects on organizational communication taught in the Degree in Journalism of Spanish universities. The dominant or main approach design is used, in which Action Research prevails as a qualitative method that favors change in the educational processes for social transformation; and to which the quantitative component of the survey is added, in order to evaluate the results of the proposal carried out here. From the revision of the teaching guides and the analysis of job vacancies it is observed that, even if there is correspondence in the recognition of competencies such as analytical capacity, writing, editing, relational skills, strategy and proactivity in the university and the companies, the university does not teach relevant skills demanded by the working market such as teamwork, autonomy, command of English and the use of technological tools of the network society.     Casein phosphopeptides drastically increase the secretion of extracellular proteins in Aspergillus awamori. Proteomics studies reveal changes in the secretory pathway

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The secretion of heterologous animal proteins in filamentous fungi is usually limited by bottlenecks in the vesicle-mediated secretory pathway.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using the secretion of bovine chymosin in <it>Aspergillus awamori </it>as a model, we found a drastic increase (40 to 80-fold) in cells grown with casein or casein phosphopeptides (CPPs). CPPs are rich in phosphoserine, but phosphoserine itself did not increase the secretion of chymosin. The stimulatory effect is reduced about 50% using partially dephosphorylated casein and is not exerted by casamino acids. The phosphopeptides effect was not exerted at transcriptional level, but instead, it was clearly observed on the secretion of chymosin by immunodetection analysis. Proteomics studies revealed very interesting metabolic changes in response to phosphopeptides supplementation. The oxidative metabolism was reduced, since enzymes involved in fermentative processes were overrepresented. An oxygen-binding hemoglobin-like protein was overrepresented in the proteome following phosphopeptides addition. Most interestingly, the intracellular pre-protein enzymes, including pre-prochymosin, were depleted (most of them are underrepresented in the intracellular proteome after the addition of CPPs), whereas the extracellular mature form of several of these secretable proteins and cell-wall biosynthetic enzymes was greatly overrepresented in the secretome of phosphopeptides-supplemented cells. Another important 'moonlighting' protein (glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase), which has been described to have vesicle fusogenic and cytoskeleton formation modulating activities, was clearly overrepresented in phosphopeptides-supplemented cells.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In summary, CPPs cause the reprogramming of cellular metabolism, which leads to massive secretion of extracellular proteins.</p

    Self-assembled trityl radical capsules implications for dynamic nuclear polarization

    A new class of guest-induced, bi-radical self-assembled organic capsules is reported. They are formed by the inclusion of a tetramethylammonium (TMA) cation between two monomers of the stable trityl radical OX63. OX63 is extensively used in dissolution dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) where it leads to NMR sensitivity enhancements of several orders of magnitude. The supramolecular properties of OX63 have a strong impact on its DNP properties. An especially relevant case is the polarization of choline-containing metabolites, where complex formation between choline and OX63 results in faster relaxation
