    Dental age diagnostics by means of radiographical evaluation of the growth stages of lower wisdom teeth

    The main criterion for dental age estimation in living adolescents and young adults is mineralization of third molars. A total of 1,260 orthopantomograms of 669 female and 591 male subjects aged between 15 and 22years was examined. Of the orthopantomograms, 1,137 were from patients with Swiss citizenship and 123 were from other European countries. The mineralization status of lower third molars was evaluated based on Demirjian's classification of stages. For the statistical assessment of data, logistic regression and mean value testing were used. The findings show that completed growth in wisdom teeth is observable at ages less than 18. Male individuals were approximately 1year ahead of females at stage H, and South East Europeans were approximately 6months ahead of Swiss (Central Europe) at stage H. Mean values led to false conclusions regarding the question of the attained age of 18. Therefore, regression analysis should be used for the statistical assessment of data in dental age diagnostic

    Anisotropy and XKS-splitting from geodynamic models of double subduction: Testing the limits of interpretation

    In this study, we develop three-dimensional geodynamic models to predict XKS-splitting for double subduction scenarios characterized by two outward dipping slabs. These models are highly relevant in various realistic settings, such as the central Mediterranean. We focus on the analysis of XKS-splitting, a key geophysical observable used to infer seismic anisotropy and mantle flow patterns predicted from these geodynamic models. Our geodynamic models simulate the concurrent subduction of two identical oceanic plates which are separated by a continental plate. The variation of the separating plate strength, cause a transition from a retreating to a stationary trench. The models provide detailed insights into the temporal evolution of mantle flow patterns, especially the amount of trench parallel flow, induced by these double subduction scenarios. In a second step, we use the well-known D-Rex model (Kaminski et al., 2004) to efficiently estimate the CPO development in response to plastic deformation produced by mantle flow. Based on the results of the D-Rex model, which includes the full elastic tensor of a deformed multiphase polycrystalline mantle aggregate within the three-dimensional model, we obtain synthetic apparent splitting parameters at receivers placed at the surface by applying multiple-layer anisotropic waveform modeling. Employing analytical techniques, we show the ambiguous nature of apparent splitting parameters, as already suggested by previous studies based on numerical modeling. In the light of the results, we postulate that a meaningful inversion, based on the commonly applied 2-layer anisotropic model, requires additional constraints on fast-axis orientation or strength of anisotropy (delay time). Finally, we show that constraints from our texture simulations (i.e., the integrated delay time) can be used to achieve unique 2-layer models that perfectly fit the synthetic observables. Such models could serve as reference for the interpretation of the observations. Our study highlights the necessity of combining geodynamic modeling and XKS-splitting analysis to shed light on complex upper mantle flow patterns such as those that might occur around subduction zones

    Presence of Leptospira spp. in Caiman latirostris (Crocodylia, Alligatoridae) populations in Santa Fe, Argentina

    Leptospirosis is a disease caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira, transmitted by wild and domestic animals. Rodents play a fundamental role in the transmission cycle of this zoonosis but the function of reptiles is unknown. For example, crocodilians could play an important role in the transmission of this disease by living in ideal environments (bodies of shallow water and high temperatures) for the colonization of this bacterium. However, few studies have documented the presence of zoonotic diseases in caiman populations. Our objective was to assess the prevalence of antibodies to leptospira and the presence of Leptospira spp. in wild and captive Caiman latirostris. Blood samples were taken from 45 individuals (20 wild and 25 captive). Before extraction, we cleaned each caiman's neck in order to prevent contamination of samples. We determined the presence of antibodies in serum by microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect DNA of the bacteria. We excluded 9 of the 45 samples analyzed by MAT because 5 had lipemic serum and 4 were contaminated (colonized by other organisms). Of the 36 caimans studied by microscopic agglutination test (MAT), 56% (20/36) were considered reactive (titers ≥50). In 74% (14/19) of captive samples and 35% (6/17) of wild samples, antibodies to leptospira were detected by MAT. The serogroup with highest occurrence was Pyrogenes (85%, n = 17/20), presenting coagglutinations with Icterohaemorrhagiae (25%, n = 5/20). One sample from a captive animal was positive for PCR, and we could not isolate leptospires because of agar contamination. Of the 45 blood agar media, 17.8% were contaminated and the rest were negative. This work determined the presence of Leptospira spp. in one caiman and a high prevalence of antibodies in captive caiman relative to wild individuals.Fil: Bauso, Jazmín. Provincia de Entre Ríos.     The persistence of epiphyseal scars in the distal radius in adult individuals

    The use of radiographic imaging in the estimation of chronological age facilitates the analysis of structures not visible on gross morphological inspection. Following the completion of epiphyseal fusion, a thin radio-opaque band, the epiphyseal scar, may be observed at the locus of the former growth plate. The obliteration of this feature has previously been interpreted as the final stage of skeletal maturation and consequently has been included as a criterion in several methods of age estimation, particularly from the distal radius. Due to the recommendations relating to age estimation in living individuals, accurate assessment of age from the distal radius is of great importance in human identification; however, the validity of the interpretation of the obliteration of the epiphyseal scar as an age-related process has not been tested. A study was undertaken to assess the persistence of epiphyseal scars in adults between 20 and 50 years of age through the assessment of 616 radiographs of left and right distal radii from a cross-sectional population. This study found that 86 % of females and 78 % of males retained some remnant of the epiphyseal scar in the distal radius. The relationships between chronological age, biological sex and the persistence of the epiphyseal scar were not statistically significant. The findings of this study indicate that the epiphyseal scars may persist in adult individuals until at least 50 years of age. No maximum age should therefore be applied to the persistence of an epiphyseal scar in the distal radius

    Applicability of T1-weighted MRI in the assessment of forensic age based on the epiphyseal closure of the humeral head

    This work investigates the value of magnetic resonance imaging analysis of proximal epiphyseal fusion in research examining the growth and development of the humerus and its potential utility in establishing forensic age estimation. In this study, 428 proximal humeral epiphyses (patient age, 12-30years) were evaluated with T1-weighted turbo spin echo (T1 TSE) sequences in coronal oblique orientation on shoulder MRI images. A scoring system was created following a combination of the Schmeling and Kellinghaus methods. Spearman's rank correlation analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between age and ossification stage of the proximal humeral epiphysis (all subjects: rho=0.664, p<0.001; males: 0.631, p<0.001; females: rho=0.651, p<0.001). The intra- and inter-observer reliability assessed using Cohen's kappa statistic was =0.898 and =0.828, respectively. The earliest age of epiphysis closure was 17years for females and 18years for males. MRI of the proximal humeral epiphysis can be considered advantageous for forensic age estimation of living individuals in a variety of situations, ranging from monitoring public health to estimating the age of illegal immigrants/asylum seekers, minors engaged in criminal activities, and illegal participants in competitive sports, without the danger of radiation exposure

    Forensic age diagnostics by magnetic resonance imaging of the proximal humeral epiphysis

    The most commonly used radiological method for age estimation of living individuals is X-ray. Computed tomography is not commonly used due to high radiation exposure, which raises ethical concerns. This problem can be solved with the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which avoids the use of ionizing radiation. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the utility of MRI analysis of the proximal humeral epiphyses for forensic age estimations of living individuals. In this study, 395 left proximal humeral epiphyses (patient age 12-30years) were evaluated with fast-spin-echo proton density-weighted image (FSE PD) sequences in a coronal oblique orientation on shoulder MRI images. A five-stage scoring system was used following the method of Dedouit et al. The intra- and interobserver reliabilities assessed using Cohen's kappa statistic were =0.818 and =0.798, respectively. According to this study, stage five first appeared at 20 and 21years of age in males and females, respectively. These results are not directly comparable to any other published study due to the lack of MRI data on proximal humeral head development. These findings may provide valuable information for legally important age thresholds using shoulder MRI. The current study demonstrates that MRI of the proximal humerus can support forensic age estimation. Further research is needed to establish a standardized protocol that can be applied worldwide

    A comparison of numerical surface topography calculations in geodynamic modelling: an evaluation of the ‘sticky air' method

    Calculating surface topography in geodynamic models is a common numerical problem. Besides other approaches, the so-called ‘sticky air' approach has gained interest as a free-surface proxy at the top boundary. The often used free slip condition is thereby vertically extended by introducing a low density, low viscosity fluid layer. This allows the air/crust interface to behave in a similar manner to a true free surface. We present here a theoretical analysis that provides the physical conditions under which the sticky air approach is a valid approximation of a true free surface. Two cases are evaluated that characterize the evolution of topography on different timescales: (1) isostatic relaxation of a cosine perturbation and (2) topography changes above a rising plume. We quantitatively compare topographies calculated by six different numerical codes (using finite difference and finite element techniques) using three different topography calculation methods: (i) direct calculation of topography from normal stress, (ii) body-fitting methods allowing for meshing the topography and (iii) Lagrangian tracking of the topography on an Eulerian grid. It is found that the sticky air approach works well as long as the term (ηst/ηch)/(hst/L)3 is sufficiently small, where ηst and hst are the viscosity and thickness of the sticky air layer, and ηch and L are the characteristic viscosity and length scale of the model, respectively. Spurious lateral fluctuations of topography, as observed in some marker-based sticky air approaches, may effectively be damped by an anisotropic distribution of markers with a higher number of markers per element in the vertical than in the horizontal directio

    Spectrum and Charge Ratio of Vertical Cosmic Ray Muons up to Momenta of 2.5 TeV/c

    The ALEPH detector at LEP has been used to measure the momentum spectrum and charge ratio of vertical cosmic ray muons underground. The sea-level cosmic ray muon spectrum for momenta up to 2.5 TeV/c has been obtained by correcting for the overburden of 320 meter water equivalent (mwe). The results are compared with Monte Carlo models for air shower development in the atmosphere. From the analysis of the spectrum the total flux and the spectral index of the cosmic ray primaries is inferred. The charge ratio suggests a dominantly light composition of cosmic ray primaries with energies up to 10^15 eV

    Intrinsic ergodicity beyond specification: beta-shifts, S-gap shifts, and their factors

    We give sufficient conditions for a shift space (Σ,σ)(\Sigma,\sigma) to be intrinsically ergodic, along with sufficient conditions for every subshift factor of Σ\Sigma to be intrinsically ergodic. As an application, we show that every subshift factor of a β\beta-shift is intrinsically ergodic, which answers an open question included in Mike Boyle's article "Open problems in symbolic dynamics". We obtain the same result for SS-gap shifts, and describe an application of our conditions to more general coded systems.
