    Unveiling shocks in planetary nebulae

    The propagation of a shock wave into a medium is expected to heat the material beyond the shock, producing noticeable effects in intensity line ratios such as [O III]/Halpha. To investigate the occurrence of shocks in planetary nebulae (PNe), we have used all narrowband [O III] and Halpha images of PNe available in the HST archive to build their [O III]/Halpha ratio maps and to search for regions where this ratio is enhanced. Regions with enhanced [O III]/Halpha emission ratio can be ascribed to two different types of morphological structures: bow-shock structures produced by fast collimated outflows and thin skins enveloping expanding nebular shells. Both collimated outflows and expanding shells are therefore confirmed to generate shocks in PNe. We also find regions with depressed values of the [O III]/Halpha ratio which are found mostly around density bounded PNe, where the local contribution of [N II] emission into the F656N Halpha filter cannot be neglected.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables; To appear in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Classification, characterisation and strategies for improvement of cattle and sheep pasture systems in marginal areas of Southern Chile

    Pasture-based livestock systems in farms with medium or low size are especially important in less favored areas and are valuable for society. For these systems to survive, it is necessary to obtain an acceptable level of productivity and ensure commercialization of the products. This study was carried out in the district of Rio Ibáñez, General Carrera Province, in the XI (Aysén) Region of Chile. The sample consisted of 28 small-scale livestock farmers with dual-purpose cattle production; 16 of them also produced sheep for meat. The empirical data produced 55 variables which were subjected to multivariate analysis; three main components were obtained which explain 72.1 % of the variance. By cluster analysis it was obtained four groups with characteristics which varied by farm size, age and personal situation of farmers, farm management and farm profitability. The principal problems found are low productivity in the herds and the poor marketing channels of animals produced. In two groups, due to the low size and poor management, the profitability of the farms is very low and this may compromise their future. To improve production systems, the training and advice of farmers should be strengthened, investment should be supported, especially for young people, and the farmer partnership should be promoted.     Model of the meniscus of an ionic liquid ion source.

    A simple model of the transfer of charge and ion evaporation in the meniscus of an ionic-liquid ion source working in the purely ionic regime is proposed on the basis of order-of-magnitude estimates which show that, in this regime, _i_ the flow in the meniscus is dominated by the viscosity of the liquid and is affected very little by the mass flux accompanying ion evaporation, and _ii_ the effect of the space charge around the evaporating surface is negligible and the evaporation current is controlled by the finite electrical conductivity of the liquid. The model predicts that a stationary meniscus of a very polar liquid undergoing ion evaporation is nearly hydrostatic and can exist only below a certain value of the applied electric field, at which the meniscus attains its maximum elongation but stays smooth. The electric current vs applied electric field characteristic displays a frozen regime of negligible ion evaporation at low fields and a conduction-controlled regime at higher fields, with a sharp transition between the two regimes owing to the high sensitivity of the ion evaporation rate to the electric field. A simplified treatment of the flow in the capillary or liquid layer through which liquid is delivered to the meniscus shows that the size of the meniscus decreases and the maximum attainable current increases when the feeding pressure is decreased, and that appropriate combinations of feeding pressure and pressure drop may lead to high maximum currents

    Physical Structure of Planetary Nebulae. I. The Owl Nebula

    The Owl Nebula is a triple-shell planetary nebula with the outermost shell being a faint bow-shaped halo. We have obtained deep narrow-band images and high-dispersion echelle spectra in the H-alpha, [O III], and [N II] emission lines to determine the physical structure of each shell in the nebula. These spatio-kinematic data allow us to rule out hydrodynamic models that can reproduce only the nebular morphology. Our analysis shows that the inner shell of the main nebula is slightly elongated with a bipolar cavity along its major axis, the outer nebula is a filled envelope co-expanding with the inner shell at 40 km/s, and the halo has been braked by the interstellar medium as the Owl Nebula moves through it. To explain the morphology and kinematics of the Owl Nebula, we suggest the following scenario for its formation and evolution. The early mass loss at the TP-AGB phase forms the halo, and the superwind at the end of the AGB phase forms the main nebula. The subsequent fast stellar wind compressed the superwind to form the inner shell and excavated an elongated cavity at the center, but has ceased in the past.     Pulse processing routines for neutron time-of-flight data

    A pulse shape analysis framework is described, which was developed for n_TOF-Phase3, the third phase in the operation of the n_TOF facility at CERN. The most notable feature of this new framework is the adoption of generic pulse shape analysis routines, characterized by a minimal number of explicit assumptions about the nature of pulses. The aim of these routines is to be applicable to a wide variety of detectors, thus facilitating the introduction of the new detectors or types of detectors into the analysis framework. The operational details of the routines are suited to the specific requirements of particular detectors by adjusting the set of external input parameters. Pulse recognition, baseline calculation and the pulse shape fitting procedure are described. Special emphasis is put on their computational efficiency, since the most basic implementations of these conceptually simple methods are often computationally inefficient.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 5 table

    Encapsulation of gold nanostructures and oil-in-water nanocarriers in microgels with biomedical potential

    Indexación: Scopus.Funding: This research was funded by FONDECYT 1161450, 1150744, 11130494 and 1170929, FONDEQUIP EQM160157, EQM170111, CONICYT-FONDAP 15130011, and CONICYT PhD Scholarship 21141137.Here we report the incorporation of gold nanostructures (nanospheres or nanorods, functionalized with carboxylate-end PEG) and curcumin oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions (CurNem) into alginate microgels using the dripping technique. While gold nanostructures are promising nanomaterials for photothermal therapy applications, CurNem possess important pharmacological activities as reported here. In this sense, we evaluated the effect of CurNem on cell viability of both cancerous and non-cancerous cell lines (AGS and HEK293T, respectively), demonstrating preferential toxicity in cancer cells and safety for the non-cancerous cells. After incorporating gold nanostructures and CurNem together into the microgels, microstructures with diameters of 220 and 540 µm were obtained. When stimulating microgels with a laser, the plasmon effect promoted a significant rise in the temperature of the medium; the temperature increase was higher for those containing gold nanorods (11–12 ◦ C) than nanospheres (1–2 ◦ C). Interestingly, the incorporation of both nanosystems in the microgels maintains the photothermal properties of the gold nanostructures unmodified and retains with high efficiency the curcumin nanocarriers.     Tectonic geomorphology and late Quaternary deformation on the Ragged Mountain fault, Yakutat microplate, south coastal Alaska

    The 33 km-long Ragged Mountain fault (RMF) forms the northwestern corner of the Yakutat Terrane, which is colliding with the North American plate in south coastal Alaska at ~5.5 cm/yr. The fault zone contains three types of scarps in a zone up to 175 m wide: (1) antislope scarps on the lower range front, (2) a sinuous thrust scarp at the toe of the range front, and (3) a swarm of flexural-slip scarps on the footwall. Trenches across the first two scarp types reveal evidence for two Holocene surface ruptures, plus several late Pleistocene ruptures. In the antislope scarp trench, ruptures occurred at 0.5–3.9 ka; slightly younger than 8.3 ka; and at 18.1–21.8 ka (recurrence intervals 4.4–8 kyr and 9.8–13.3 kyr). Displacements per event ranged from 15 to 40 cm. In the thrust trench ruptures are dated at 2.8–5.9 ka; 5.9–17.2 ka, and 17.2–44.9 ka (mean recurrence intervals 7.2 kyr and 19.5 kyr). Displacements per event ranged from 26 to 77 cm. We interpret the thrust fault as the primary seismogenic structure, and its largest trench displacement (77 cm) equates to the average displacement expected for a 33 km-long reverse rupture. The flexural-slip scarp, in contrast, was rapidly formed ca. 4 ka but its sag pond sediments have continued to slowly fold up to present. The southern third of the fault is dominated by large gravitational failures of the range front (as large as 2.5 km wide, 0.6-0.7 km long, and 200–250 m thick), which head in a linear, 40 m-deep range-crest trough filled with lakes, a classic expression of deep-seated gravitational slope deformation

    Utilización de Ethnograph 5.0 en la Evaluación Cualitativa ex post de Proyectos en Comunidades Rurales

    Se realizó un estudio cualitativo con la finalidad de validar el programa Ethnograph v5.0 como una herramienta en la evaluación cualitativa ex post de proyectos agrícolas. Con este fin se aplicó la herramienta de análisis cualitativo de datos, Ethnograph v5.0 en la evaluación ex post de beneficios económico-sociales no cuantificables del proyecto de desarrollo agrícola "Desarrollo de productos orgánicos y funcionales en base a la avellana  (Gevuina avellana mol) y creación de mercados para su consumo" a modo de ejemplo de aplicación. Con la validación de esta herramienta se pretende entregar una opción metodológica para las evaluaciones cualitativas en el sector agrícola. Para ello, se hace entrega de un informe en el cual se detallan de manera clara y precisa cada uno de los pasos a seguir en la aplicación de esta metodología, el que incluye además un análisis de costos. Todo esto a objeto de que el investigador pueda dimensionar tanto la riqueza de información, tiempo, funcionalidad, accesibilidad, objetividad y costo; a modo de guía en lo que respecta a la toma de decisiones al momento de la elección de una metodología de análisis cualitativo. La metodología planteada demostró ser sistemática, rápida, rica en información concreta, fundamentada y a un costo de mercado aceptable al nivel de velocidad y calidad de información obtenida. Cabe destacar que el uso de esta metodología demanda conocimiento previo de análisis cualitativo y uso del software, pues de ello dependerá la calidad del análisis y la información obtenida
